Few Fab Words About Costume in The Duchess

Keira Knightley has been working her socks off over the past few weeks promoting her latest movie The Duchess. If you've missed the interviews over at Pop UK then make sure you jump over there to see what the cast had to say about sex in the movie, and the Princess Diana connection.

But what we're really interested in is the costume! We already provided you with a brief insight and a few sketches but here is what Keira Knightley and Hayley Atwell had to say on the amazing costumes designed by Michael O'Connor.

The film is out across the UK today so make sure you get out to see it.

Which of the styles is more you Keira: the football kits of Bend It Like Beckham or the period costumes of The Duchess?

KK: Well, I have no plans to go around London in eighteenth century costume! But equally not football shorts either. The costumes were completely fantastic and obviously she was a very famous fashion icon. The opportunity to work with Michael O’Connor, who is a tremendous talent, was amazing. They weren't particularly comfortable. It was very simply the fact that you need to wear a corset and can’t catch your breath, so any emotions are much more heightened. You can’t calm them down. So they were very helpful in the portrayal of character for me.

To find out about the problems moving around in costumes read more

How long did it take you to get in to the costumes?

HA: Was it two and a half hours?
KK: Yes, and we had to be sewn in to some of them, which they would have actually been, sewn in and cut out.
HA: Going to the toilet was quite difficult.
KK: Going to the toilet was very difficult. Actually I didn’t fit in to the toilet in the trailer [laughter] which is quite difficult in itself. Why do I want to share that publicly?

And what about getting in to cars?

KK: Yes, all the cars with the wigs. Actually we would walk into the car like that [sideways] it was quite difficult.
HA: They were very heavy, there were so many layers to them and so much detail. We were having to find different gestures and postures to sit in that we could sustain for long periods of time without hurting ourselves. They were absolutely extraordinary and you think; that was how they dressed every single day. At the end of the day, because the wigs themselves were so intricate and beautiful, you couldn’t rip them off as I often wanted to do [laughs]. You had to unstitch yourself, so it took almost as long to get out as to get in.

Keira Knightley's Rather Revealing Interview

Keira Knightley, no stranger to a magazine cover, found time between movie premieres to sit down with Interview. She stars in a rather racy photo shoot and discusses her upcoming film Atonement, why she's viewed as old Hollywood, and why she keeps taking her clothes off for magazines. Here's more:

On the characters in Atonement: Everybody has regrets. Everybody feels guilty about something, though hopefully not for something as bad as what happens in the movie. But that’s what is wonderful about the book and the film - you understand where these people are coming from. The situation may be completely different from ones I’ve experienced or that most people have experienced, but the core emotions are the same - that we all make mistakes, and sometimes we’re horrendous to each other. It’s the Robbie character [played by James McAvoy] that I find truly heartbreaking, because at the beginning he’s really Christ-like in his goodness - he’s a selfless, perfect person - and in a funny way I don’t think we can ever handle it when someone is that good, so what we do is destroy them.

To see what else Keira says to Interview as well as more photos just read more

On seeming old Hollywood: I think it has more to do with the films I’ve done. If you watch Atonement the look of my character, Cecilia Tallis, is incredibly stylized and sort of movie star-esque for that time. But I think different people have seen me in a different ways. I started out being very much “girl next door,” and now I’ve gone into a bit of Hollywood-glamour phase.

About her photo shoot: We ended by taking my clothes off again. How does that always happen... I don’t know. Because I say yes, I suppose.

Hey, at least she's honest. I read Atonement many years ago and recall the ending making me angry, but otherwise loving it. I can't wait to see how Keira and James translate it onto the big screen.

View 5 Photos ›

Keira And Costars Deal With The Duchess Diana Connection

When I met the stars of The Duchess, Keira Knightley, Dominic Cooper and Hayley Atwell were happy to spill about the sex scenes in the film. Another hot topic was the Diana connection. Keira's character, Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire, is an ancestor of Princess Diana and there are parallels between the women's complicated marriages. The trailer makes the link explicit, but what do the actors and the director, Saul Dibb, think about the parallels? They told me all about it.

Much has been made of the Diana parallels. How aware of them were you, and how conscious were you of communicating them through the film?

SD - Amanda Foreman’s book, which never actually referenced Diana specifically, every review of that book drew those parallels. I think in the making of the film those parallels didn’t bear any relation to what we were doing. We were trying to make a film about people in their own right, and trying to nail their relationships in as true a way as we possibly could to their relationships with each other, and not their external relationships to anybody else.

So it was never once something that we talked about as a reference for us, or anything that might influence the actors or the approach. The parallels are straight forward and obvious, and out in the public domain.

Keira, did you feel any parallels between your story and the story of Princess Diana?

KK - I was 11 when Diana died so I really don’t know what the actual story is, so I don’t feel that I can comment on the parallels. I think I was definitely aware of the images. I knew when I was going in to it that she was a distant relation, but actually that’s as far as my knowledge goes.

As Saul said, I was very much making a film about Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire, and I think she’s an interesting enough person to warrant a film completely about her and without comparisons.

To find out more about the filmmakers' views in comparison to the marketing, plus the actors thoughts about playing the parts of real people, read more

Saul, the inscription on the poster “there were three people in her marriage” [above] is a very direct reference to Diana, how do you feel about that?

SD - The reality is there’s the filmmakers, which is all of us making the film, and then there’s the marketing of the film afterwards; they’re two different things. We had the freedom to make our film, they have the freedom to market the film. It cost them a lot of money and they want to get as wide as audience in. All they’ve done is made explicit what would have been written about by everybody anyway and in a sense they’ve cut out the middleman and gone directly to it.

It doesn’t represent us and our approach to the film, but for them to make that choice is up to them and if it gets more people in to see the film, which stands on its own, then perhaps they’re right [laughter]. But I don’t think any of us would feel that that is …

KK -It certainly wasn’t a reason for me to make the film anyway.

SD -It’s just a marketing device.

There are many other parallels between them, like the celebrity culture surrounding Georgiana, this woman living her life in the public eye...

SD - There are parallels, but parallels could be drawn with any number of particularly tragic female figures. Marilyn Monroe you could pick on, and you could find lots of parallels. It’s purely because of the ancestral link that I think people are so keen to draw that one.

Did you use physical artifacts to help in your understanding of the characters and their relationships?

SD - The basic facts of their relationships are documented and what actually happens in these private bedrooms and hallways is the stuff of our creative imagining. So what you’re trying to do is get the essence.

KK - I think that’s right. I think fundamentally at some point you have to put the biography away and you have to stick to the script. It is a dramatisation, it isn’t a … democracy? What am I trying to say? [laughter] What are they called? Documentary! Thank you so much.

So you do just have to tell the story that you’re trying to tell. You have to let your own imagination go as well. It’s great to be able to read all these things, to be able to read their actual letters, and you can kind of mull it all over and have it in the back of your head, but fundamentally you have to stick to the script.

Is there any more pressure to do them justice than a fictional character?

HA - Personally speaking, no, because you’re given a job and your job is to make an interpretation of a character that’s in the script or that has been living, and to work hard enough to feel like you’re doing it justice.

If you’re playing someone that has lived there’s the risk of imitation. Do you focus more on the essence on who that character was as opposed to the physical mannerisms, or what is it ultimately that this particular adaptation of a story, whether it’s fiction or not, is trying to say, and the dynamic between the characters as a story, as opposed to trying to imitate something.

KK - I’d agree.

DC - Yeah, much more terrifying to try to imitate someone who’s actually alive now, that’s more difficult.

SD - There is lots of information but it’s largely incomplete and you have to take with a pinch of salt large amounts of the information that you have for those people. So you just have to trust the performances and the instincts to create the piece of drama that works.

I certainly think the films stands on its own, without the Diana connection, and it was fascinating to hear about the differing angles that the filmmakers and the marketing department have taken. The stars of the film will be in London's Leicester Square tonight for the premiere, and I'll be bringing you all the gossip and photos from that tomorrow. Stay tuned for my review too, and Fab UK's lowdown on the costumes.

Keira And Costars Tell Us All About The Sex in The Duchess

Recently I had the amazing opportunity to meet the stars of The Duchess and hear all about the role sex plays in the movie, from the practicalities of filming sex scenes to the sexual politics of the period. Here's an excerpt of the Q+A with Keira Knightley (who plays the eponymous Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire), Dominic Cooper (who plays her extra-marital love interest, Earl Grey) and Hayley Atwell (who plays the third person in Georgiana's marriage, Bess Foster). Come back to PopSugar UK later in the week to see what else the gang had to say about the film, including the Diana connection. I'll also bring you my review before the film's release on 5 September.

Keira was wearing a black maxi dress with a pussy bow neck and beautiful ruffles, with her hair back and her fringe sweeping across her forehead. Dominic in his shirt and suit jacket looked as gorgeous as when he chatted about Mamma Mia!, and Hayley kept it crisp and stylish in a white shirt. Speaking of clothes...

What was it like to get in to the costumes?

KK - We had to be sewn in to some of them, which they would have actually been, sewn in and cut out.
DC - Which is very difficult in a moment of passion to undo at a rapid pace without looking ridiculous [laughter] Sorry!
KK - I can’t add anything after that!

To find out what Dominic wore in his sex scene, plus Keira and Hayley's thoughts about the sexual relationship between their characters, read more

Keira, the love scene with Dominic was pretty raunchy given that you keep your clothes on – is it more difficult or easier to do a sex scene without …

KK - … taking your clothes off? Hmm. I don’t know! I hadn’t thought about it. Erm. Yes? No? What would be the right answer to that?
HA - I always think it’s what you don’t see.
KK - I think it’s much sexier not seeing, I mean as a personal preference.
DC - I wasn’t told that [laughter] I’ve never been told that!
KK - No, you were told just to get your kit off.
HA - What were you wearing?
KK - He was wearing a nappy!
DC - I was told to put the nappy on and get on with it.
KK - Oh I’m so sorry.
DC - You chose it! There was a selection of things…
KK - There wasn’t, you’re lying! During the sex scene I was luckily fully clothed and he got to wear a skin-coloured nappy.
DC - Sellotaped to the inner sanctum! [laughter]
KK - I left that out! Yes, they’re never the best things. You are meant to be very supportive of each other but he did come out in a skin-coloured nappy and I just completely lost it. I’m so sorry I just couldn’t stop laughing and Saul did come over and say “Come on, just pull yourself together, this is serious work”. But he’s standing there in a skin-coloured nappy, I don’t know what I’m supposed to do! [laughter]

Hayley, it seemed the relationship between Bess and Georgiana started in one place and ended in another.

HA - I think that’s a credit to the complexities that Bess and Georgiana had within their relationship. It starts off with you thinking, what are Bess’s intentions here, is she a social climber, is she trying to get in to the household to further her status or to get custody of her own children?

But then I think it’s proof that when she spends the rest of her life with them, there’s a lot more genuine affection between them than was initially implied, and that her intentions at the beginning were possibly misunderstood. With Bess it felt like she’d become the mediator between the Duke and the Duchess and could understand them in a way that they couldn’t understand each other, because of at times their clashing personalities.

To what extent do you think the sexual aspect of the relationship between Bess and Georgiana was underplayed?

HA - With the sexual awakening scene, we wanted to be delicate enough with it to show an aspect of their relationship that wasn’t sexual. This was a time when you wouldn’t label it, there were no homosexuals, they didn’t have a label. I think marriage then, especially within aristocracy, was one based on more of a business deal than it was based on love or passion, so you were able to have your love affairs elsewhere.

With women teaching women how to enjoy themselves and their body sexually, it's something that shows how beautiful their relationship was, but you could also say it was partly Bess having a sexual power over G, as well as other forms of power, so it’s complicated.

What are your thoughts Keira?

KK - I thought she answered that very well! I was fascinated by the relationship between them. When I read the script for it, the first thing about Georgiana that really struck me was just how incredibly lonely this woman was; constantly surrounded by so many people and yet entirely alone. I decided she was somebody that just tried to grab on to any kind of love and attention that she could possibly get.

The friendship with Bess comes at a point when she’s been living with this man that doesn’t talk to her, they basically have no relationship for a number of years, and all of a sudden this woman comes in who’s interested in her, who wants to talk to her and teach her things, and who shows her love.

So I thought the sexual part of it – and it’s very much Bess teaching Georgiana that there is enjoyment to be had in an act that I think she’d never realised there was any pleasure in whatsoever – I thought it was a really interesting turn within the relationship and the fact that it’s a woman. I decided that Georgiana did love her very much, which is why the betrayal of Bess sleeping with the Duke is so absolute.

Keira, what do you think the film can teach teenage girls today about love and sacrifice?

KK - Oh Christ, don’t get married at 17 I think is probably what it teaches! [laughter] To a Duke, yeah! I think she was incredibly young, and incredibly romantic, and impressionistic, and she certainly finds out that the romance and the reality of the situation is very different.

So I think it’s a story of a fairytale going incredibly wrong. I’m not quite sure what that will teach teenage girls about marriage at 17, maybe, wait! Don’t!

The three actors were having a great time giggling with each other, but it was also clear that they feel passionately about the film and the more serious issues that it raises. The question of the Diana connection is coming up in a future installment, my girl FabUK will be bringing you their thoughts on the wigs and dresses, and I'll also give you my opinion on the film itself, so stay tuned!

Keira Knightley Is Royally Pleased To Grant Interviews

Keira Knightley left the Radio 1 studios in London yesterday after an interview to discuss her upcoming film The Duchess. She's been making the rounds recently in anticipation of her new movie's release and Pop UK was lucky enough to chat with Keira about her role and what it was like to do a love scene with co-star Dominic Cooper. Keira has been laying low since she was promoting The Edge of Love in June, but with a trip to the Toronto Film Festival in the works we're sure to be seeing lots more of her in the near future.

Pop Preview: The Duchess

Keira Knightley's latest period offering, The Duchess, is finally released at cinemas across the UK today. We've seen the stars at the world premiere and attending radio interviews, and now it's time to see if the film lives up to all the hype. Although the poster carries the famous Diana quote - "there were three people in her marriage" - the film has nothing to do with her (as the cast and director told me when I met them recently) so that aspect of the trailer is for marketing and doesn't reflect the content of the film. As Keira said, the Duchess is a fascinating character in her own right.

Keira plays the part of Georgiana Spencer, who becomes Duchess of Devonshire when she marries the much older Duke (Ralph Fiennes). The Duchess was famous at the end of the eighteenth century for her beauty, fashion sense and appetite for gambling. She became a shrewd political operator and a doting mother, but it is her search for love that forms the heart of this story. The complexities of her relationship with her best friend and husband's mistress, Bess Foster (Hayley Atwell), and her affair with Prime Minister in training Earl Grey (Dominic Cooper), drive the plot as Georgiana faces heartbreaking decisions imposed on her by her powerful husband.

To find out why I gave The Duchess four stars, and to read the cast and director's thoughts on the film, just read more

The acting is first-class, and Ralph Fiennes' performance is particularly strong. The Duke is an unsympathetic character on paper but the director, Saul Dibb, said it was very important to Ralph that the Duke was a rounded character. Although it is a dark story, there are a lot of darkly funny moments, and these are courtesy of the Duke. Saul told me his thoughts on Ralph and these lighter moments:

"He just gave us a brilliant performance. I think they are blackly comic, a lot of these moments, often because he absolutely said with conviction things that belonged to the time, values that belonged to the time. For modern audience it’s just so extraordinary to hear those things said so bluntly. He’s also got amazing comic timing".

The locations are breathtaking too, and testament to the decision to film practically every scene in real country houses and impressive buildings rather than studios.

Another strength of the film is the wardrobe. Designed by Michael O'Connor, the outfits that Georgiana and Bess wear are out of this world, or out of this contemporary world anyway.

We also get to see how their clothes are constructed in the undressing scenes, with layers upon layers of dresses, corsets and frames offering us a glimpse beyond the facade.

The wigs are incredible and used as plot devices, like when one catches fire and when the Duke and Earl take theirs off in moments of vulnerability.

My girl FabUK has got the lowdown on what Keira and Hayley said about their experience of wearing the costumes.

The relationship between G (as she is sometimes called in the film) and Bess was the most intriguing part of the film. As Hayley told me, it was a very complex relationship, and I would have liked to have seen more of an exploration into it, but after Bess betrays G's trust the film's focus turns elsewhere. If you want to see more of Hayley on the big screen, she'll be appearing in Brideshead Revisited next month (read the book with me ahead of the film's release!).

The love story between Georgiana and Earl Grey was wonderful, and was my favourite aspect of the film. Dominic gives a great performance, even though at times he comes across as too modern to completely fit in to the period. Ever since he told me all about the practicalities of filming sex scenes I haven't quite been able to look at him in the same light, but he is totally convincing as the man the Duchess truly loves.

Keira is in practically every scene and I was more impressed by her performance in this film than her previous period outings. She only overacts in a couple of scenes, and she made me care about the character. She told me "it was a wonderful challenge" to take on such a big role, but also "completely terrifying". Keira also has strong views on the ending. Without wanting to give too much away, it is seen by some as a happy one, but not by Keira. She told me:

"I think the whole journey for her is from idealism in to reality, in a strange kind of way, and I think she gets very much broken down in the end. The whole thing is like a card game and she plays her cards out and for me, no, she didn’t get a happy ending. She does survive, which is I suppose in itself a happy ending".

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the film, and whether or not you think it's a happy ending, so do let me know once you've seen it.

Emily Blunt Talks About Taking On The Young Victoria

Emily Blunt was at LAX this week, hiding her eyes in shades as she checked in. Her movie The Young Victoria comes out on March 6 - will you see it or skip it?. While she was filming the period drama she answered a few questions about the movie, costume and process of filming. She swaps her real life boyfriend John Krasinski to play opposite Keira Knightley's boyfriend Rupert Friend, and here's what she had to say:

So, lots of sitting around today…
Lots of sitting… Yes, which is rather nice actually if you’re in a corset. That’s a relief. It’s a big relief. I’m quite overheated though with all these layers. The big cloak is like carrying a bear on my shoulders so that’s interesting.

What about the crown?
The crown has left a dent in my head which they just cover with make-up so I don’t look frightening to you. But it’s remarkably heavy.

How have you found playing Victoria?
It’s wonderful. It’s exciting, it’s a challenge to say the least. She was a remarkable girl and so of course you want to do her justice. And there’s a big journey to play with her from this young, rather stubborn teenager to a rather magnetic queen very much in command of herself. It’s a big arc to find and particularly when you shoot out of order, it’s tricky to maintain that. But I’m loving her. I’d read a lot about her before I did this and, contrary to popular belief, she was when she was younger a feisty and emotional and intelligent, vibrant person. I think that people mistake her for being this widowed, mourning queen. So it’s exciting that we’re going to refresh people’s opinion of Victoria in this.

To read more of Emily's interview, where she talks about being chosen for the role, gowns and Keira Knightley's man Rupert Friend, just read more.

What was it like to be chosen for the role? Especially with this film being funded by an American company.
Well, I think the British would have been up in arms if they’d put an American in this part. But still, there are much bigger English actresses out there than me and I pretty much just demanded that they cast me in the role. Or pleaded first but then demanded… And it seemed to work. Maybe there was something quite queenly in that [laughs] – commanding them to choose me please! But I do feel the weight of responsibility and I certainly did right at the beginning. It was frightening, the thought of playing her. And then as soon as you start, the nerves dissipate a bit. But it is a big responsibility and I’m really tired but I’m really enjoying it still.

How is it working with Rupert Friend as Albert?
Oh, he’s wonderful. He’s just perfectly cast, impeccable, and has morphed into this character completely and read everything, did a lot of research in a very short space of time. I just couldn’t have asked for a better guy. And you can believe him – he has a kind of gravitas so that you believe this guy would come in and help her, almost take over, almost become her superior in the relationship. He was the only one out of all of the actors that I read with that I would believe could do that.

How are you finding the gowns?
I hate the corset. Over it. So over it. Every day I have to wear it. They put it on me in the morning then they loosen it off for lunch, and then it’s painful to get back into it again after a big meal. But they are beautiful… but I think if one more person steps on my train, I might swing some punches.

You can see the lovely Emily in her corset in the movie, when it's out on March 6!

View 5 Photos ›

Keira Knightley Has Best Pout

British actress Keira Knightley has often been criticised for her pout; like Victoria Beckham it seems we don't like stars who don't smile. Now however, in a recent poll, Keira's lips have been voted the perfect pout.

In the poll of 3,000 women by beauty brand Blistex, Keira beat Angelina Jolie and Kylie to the accolade, while top of the worst pouts was, unsurprisingly, Leslie Ash with her famous 'trout pout'. Also amongst the 'pouts are out' brigade were Amy Winehouse and Jodie Marsh.

Keira has previously said that her pout does cause her some trouble. Apparently the director of Pride and Prejudice, Joe Wright, actually banned her from pouting on screen.

The twenty-three year old star, who has denied collagen injections to make her lips look bigger, claims she can't help pouting when she's concentrating. Just read more

"I honestly don't do it to be sexy" Keira has told Hello magazine, "I do it when I'm concentrating and I sort of push my lips out. I always think it makes me look kind of constipated."

I know a lot of people really despise Keira, and find her unsexy, but personally I think she is beautiful and as one of our most famous British actresses, we should be proud of her achievements. (Although possibly winning 'best pout' isn't the most endearing of achievements).

Can't wait to see her in The Duchess, after reading Pop UK's interview!

Paul Chesterton/Jessica Sethi/BigPicturesPhoto.com

Eva Mendes - who it's your last chance to submit interview questions for! - was having fun at a bash for La Mer, while a dramatically made up Keira Knightley held court with Anna Wintour at a Cinema Society screening of The Duchess. We're sure to see many more familiar faces as the week heads into its final day tomorrow.

Keira Might Hang Up Her Corset & Go Into Hiding

Gracing the cover of the UK May issue of Elle magazine with recycled images from the US version of August 2006, it's easy to see that Keira Knightley has a lot going for her. In addition to her stunning beauty, Keira's already an Academy award nominated actress and has risen to fame with the help of the Pirates franchise. However, at only 22, Keira is already learning the consequences of being famous. In the interview, Keira gets serious about the darker aspects of celebrity and why she's considering leaving the industry. Here are highlights:

'You know,' she says, 'acting was the only thing I ever wanted to do. But, to be honest, I can see myself in five years or whatever just giving the whole thing up, I would. I'd just do something else and move on. I can see things getting to the point where I just can't do this anymore.'

'All those pictures of celebrities. Are they fat? Are they thin? Have they got spots? Young female celebrities. Girls like me in magazines. All those paparazzi pictures. It' just horrible.'

'I think I just have to move away or give it up altogether,' she says. 'I couldn't have kids in the situation I'm in now. But I could just do something else. That's probably what's going to happen. I'm just not so hungry any more. I made a decision very recently that I want a life instead.'

We can't blame Keira for wanting to escape from the paparazzi, but we can't imagine she's already ready for retirement. It looks like we'll just have to check out the new Pirates movie to catch her on the big screen while we still can.

To read more of the article and see pics that were technically from last year's US Elle, just read more

View 6 Photos ›
