Ask Casa: How to Kill Weeds (Without Herbicides)

TeamSugar member Lafx23 recently wrote in, saying:

I have a lot of unwanted grass and weeds growing around my pool area (especially wild onions), and I really want to get rid of them. Every year it seems like they just come back twice as bad as the year before. Any suggestions on the best ways to kill them off?

To hear my response to Lafx23's weed dilemma, and to offer your own advice, read more.

Hi Lafx23,
That's a great question! I spent many a Spring weekend as a kid on my hands and knees pulling weeds out of the ground, during what my parents lovingly called "family weeding time," so I certainly understand your pain! There are several ways to kill weeds without using herbicides, which I strongly recommend. In some cases, after using these treatments, the weeds will resprout, but if you are persistent, even the most stubborn perennial weeds should eventually die off. Just be sure to avoid letting the treatments reach your nearby plants that are Good to Grow!

Here are several methods for killing that unwanted growth:

Douse them with boiling water. Cut off the top of the plant first. Boil up a kettle of water, and take it out to the problem area immediately. Then, pour it over the weed from a low height, so you avoid splashing yourself or nearby plants — it will burn the plant (and your skin). This method should kill off weeds, as well as their seeds. If it resprouts, repeat the treatment. This method is nontoxic, simple, and very inexpensive!

Spray them with vinegar. One great organic homemade weed killer is vinegar. Just put some in a spray bottle and coat the weeds evenly with it. Household vinegar (white or cider), which is 5 percent acetic acid, will kill weeds during their first two weeks of life. Older plants require a higher acetic acid concentration to kill off, so look for pickling vinegar which is 9 percent acetic acid. This method was confirmed by the USDA as a potent weedkiller.

Spray them with rubbing alcohol. Mix one to five tablespoons of rubbing alcohol (depending on how tough your weeds are) with one quart of water, and put the solution in a spray bottle. Spray the weeds thoroughly, but lightly, and avoid nearby plants. This will basically dehydrate the plant at a high speed, effectively killing it.

Hinder seed growth with corn meal. Corn meal gluten prevents weed seeds (or any other seeds) from going into plants — a "garden-variety" contraception. You can scatter it around your lawn so long as you've not recently planted seeds, and it won't kill plants that are already growing. Basically, this method doesn't really kill weeds, but rather prevents them from growing. I'd try this after you've used one of the treatments above.

Smother them. Smothering your weeds will kill them from lack of sun, and prevent weed seeds from sprouting (because they need sun). This isn't the most aesthetically pleasing method, but it works. To do this, try layering four sheets of newspaper or a layer of plastic over the weeds, secured down, or use two or three inches of mulch, "shredded bark, wood chips, straw, cocoa bean hulls, gravel or rocks."

Salt them. Salting the earth was used as a war tactic as far back as 1290 BC (and is even documented in the Old Testament,) as a method of rendering the land incapable of growing crops. It will not only kill your weeds but it will make the ground unsuitable for future growth for months. I don't recommend this method, but if your weeds are localized on a small scale, where you have no plans to grow other plants (say between cracks in a walkway), you can drop a pinch of table salt at the base of plants. You may have heard of killing weeds with bleach as well. Because bleach (sodium hypochlorite) has sodium in it, it basically has the same effect as salt. Not recommended.

Hope that helps!
Instead, try boiling a kettle of water. Take your kettle out to the offending weeds, and holding it close to the top of the weeds, slowly pour the water out onto them. If stubborn plants with a long tap root are the source of the problem, you can cut off the top of the plant, dig a small hole to the side of it, and then direct the water towards its taproot. If the weeds reappear, simply boil another kettle of water and use the same technique. It doesn't get much cheaper, or nontoxic, than that!

Announcing the 2009 Emmy Winners!

Well, the Emmys are over, and we have our full list of winners. Were you guys surprised by this year's picks? (Check out all my Emmy polls here.) I thought the show started out pretty unexpectedly when underdogs Kristin Chenoweth and Toni Collete took home trophies, and there were a few other surprises along the way. Towards the end, though, the big wins seemed pretty predictable with Mad Men for drama, 30 Rock for comedy - no surprises there.

I had a lot of favorite moments of the night - more on those later - but mainly, I just enjoyed seeing Neil Patrick Harris as host. I loved everything from his opening to Dr. Horrible, and most of you thought his opening number was pretty great, too.

For the full list of 2009 Emmy winners, just read more.
Ask an Accountant: Should I Let My Boyfriend Smoke Pot?

Conventional Wisdom is a different kind of advice column. Your questions will be answered by people from all walks of life rather than by advice experts. This week, an accountant advises a woman who's having a tough time with her boyfriend's pot smoking. Want to throw your hat into the ring? You can submit questions here.

Today's Question:
My boyfriend of over three years has been smoking pot since he was a teenager. I knew this before we started dating, but really thought he would quit by now. He is now 32 years old and still smokes multiple times a day. I've already talked to him about how I don't like it at all and wish he would quit. He then argues that it is better to smoke pot than to drink alcohol or do other heavier drugs. I see his friends that have families and they smoke around their babies and toddlers, but I do not want our kids (if we ever have any) to be exposed to it. Should I put my foot down harder or just let him have his "hobby"?

Signed,
Feeling Low

To see the accountant's answer, read more.

Dear Feeling Low,

It may be true that someone who smokes a lot of pot is no worse than someone who drinks a lot of alcohol, but you are wise to consider your future.

Now unless you are really warped, having kids usually makes you grow up and become responsible to some extent. But since you and he hang around others that haven't changed, my guess is that you can't count on a baby to stop the drug habit.

Now consider some really hard facts. Having kids will cost a lot, and smoking pot will really cut into your diaper budget. Since weed doesn't come with a filter, he is wrecking his health. Not to mention, lung cancer kills! So do you really want your boyfriend to increase his chances of contracting this nasty disease in the future? And don't forget about paying for all that extra medical attention. I don't know about you, but I think that insurance companies take our medical premiums and then tell us it isn't covered when we get sick. Besides, when was the last time you paid less when you went to the doctors? Cut out the weed and you can plow that money into a 401K so that when you retire you won't have to work a part-time job as a Wal-Mart greeter!

The bottom line, as we accountants like to put it, is that you need to find a new boyfriend and hang around with folks that get high on life. Ask yourself the question: how much do I love myself? Take it from a CPA, if you value yourself, the choice to move on with a new guy should add up and pay you many dividends in the future. Good luck!

Signed,
The CPA (Certified Pot Adviser)

Information

MARIJUANA (also called "grass," "pot," "reefer," "joint," "hashish," "cannabis," "weed," and "Mary Jane")

About 2 in 5 Americans have used marijuana at least once. About 10% of the population uses it on a regular basis.

The source of marijuana is the hemp plant (cannabis sativa). The active ingredients are THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and other cannabinoids, which are found in the leaves and flowering shoots of the plant.

Hashish is a substance taken from the tops of female plants. It contains the highest amount of THC.

The drug dose in marijuana varies greatly depending on how it is prepared.

You may feel the effects of marijuana within seconds to several minutes after breathing in the smoke (from a joint or a pipe), or within 30 - 60 minutes after eating foods containing marijuana, such as "hash brownies."

Because you can feel the effects almost right away, you can stop breathing in at any time to reduce the effect. In contrast, eating marijuana produces effects more slowly. These effects add up and last longer, making unpleasant reactions more likely.

The main effects of marijuana are on behavior, because the drug affects the central nervous system (CNS). Marijuana became popular because it gives people a feeling of joy (euphoria), relaxation, and increased sight, hearing, and taste with low-to-moderate doses. Most users also report an increase in their appetite ("the munchies").

Unpleasant effects that may occur include trouble telling oneself from others, changed body image, lack of orientation, and acute panic reactions or severe paranoia.

Some cases of severe delirium, seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations), and violence have also been reported. In such cases, marijuana may have been laced with another drug, such as PCP.

Marijuana has specific effects that may decrease your ability to perform tasks that require a lot of coordination (such as driving a car). It affects visual tracking and prolongs the sense of time.

The drug can affect learning because it can reduce your ability to concentrate and pay attention. Studies have shown that learning may become "state-dependent," meaning that information learned while under the influence of marijuana is best remembered in the same state of drug influence.

Other marijuana effects may include:

Airway (bronchial) irritation leading to narrowing of the airways (bronchoconstriction) or airway spasms (bronchospasm)

Bloodshot eyes

Increased heart rate and blood pressure

Pharyngitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, and asthma in heavy users

Possible serious effects on the immune system

Widening of the airways (bronchodilatation)

Regular users, when they stop marijuana use, may have withdrawal effects. These may include:

Agitation

Anxiety

Insomnia

Irritability

Because the substance formed when the body breaks down marijuana may be stored in the body's fat tissue, heavy users may show evidence of marijuana in urine tests for up to 1 month after stopping the drug.

The active substance in cannabis is believed to have medical properties. Many people believe that it can help treat nausea caused by chemotherapy in cancer patients.

Others claim that cannabis stimulates appetite in patients with AIDS, or is useful for treating glaucoma. While the active ingredient in marijuana has been approved as a medication (dronabinol) by the Food and Drug Administration for these purposes, the use of whole marijuana remains very controversial. Currently, cannabis is illegal even for medical use.

PHENCYCLIDINE (PCP, "angel dust")

It is difficult to estimate the current use of phencyclidine in the United States, because many people do not know that they have taken it. Other illegal substances (such as marijuana) can be laced with PCP without the user being aware of it.

A 1986 National Institute of Drug Abuse survey of high school seniors revealed that more than 12% of the students had used substances that cause hallucinations (hallucinogens), and that many of these drugs probably contained PCP.

PCP use in the U.S. dates back to 1967 when it was sold as the "Peace Pill" in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. It never became very popular because it had a reputation for causing "bad trips."

PCP use grew during the mid-1970s, mainly because of different packaging (sprinkling on leaves that are smoked) and marketing strategies. During the 1980s it became the most commonly used hallucinogen, especially among users aged 15 - 25.

Although phencyclidine was first created by a drug company searching for a new pain reliever (anesthetic), it was not good for human use because of its mind-altering (psychotropic) side effects.

PCP is no longer produced for legitimate, legal purposes. Unfortunately it can be made rather easily and cheaply by anyone who knows organic chemistry. This makes it a prime drug for the illegal drug industry. It is available illegally as a white powder that can be dissolved in either alcohol or water.

PCP may be taken in different ways. How fast it affects the user depends on how it is taken. If dissolved, PCP may be taken through a vein ("shot up") and its effects begin within seconds.

Sprinkled over dried parsley, oregano, or marijuana leaves, it can be smoked. The effects begin within 2 - 5 minutes, peaking at 15 - 30 minutes. Taken by mouth, in pill form, or mixed with food or drinks, PCP's effects usually start within 30 minutes. The effects tend to peak in about 2 - 5 hours.

Lower doses of PCP typically produce feelings of joy (euphoria) and less inhibition, similar to being drunk. Higher doses cause numbness throughout the body, and perception changes that may lead to extreme anxiety and violence.

Large doses may produce paranoia, "hearing voices" (auditory hallucinations), and psychosis similar to schizophrenia. Massive doses, usually from taking the drug by mouth, may cause:

Acute kidney failure

Cardiac arrhythmias

Death

Muscle rigidity

Seizures

Because of the pain-killing ( analgesic) properties of PCP, users who get seriously injured may not feel any pain.

Ketamine, a substance related to PCP, has become more popular in recent years. It is commonly called "Special K."

HALLUCINOGENS

In addition to PCP, other commonly abused hallucinogens include LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), psilocybin (mushrooms, "shrooms"), and peyote (a cactus plant containing the active ingredient mescaline).

Some people have used naturally occurring hallucinogens, especially for religious rites, for centuries. The native people of Mexico used mushrooms containing psilocybin, and peyote use was common among southwestern Native Americans.

In contrast, LSD is an artificial substance, first developed by a drug company in 1938. Today, most hallucinogens are used experimentally rather than on a regular basis. Most users report only one or a few uses per year.

LSD is a very strong hallucinogen. Only tiny doses are needed to produce effects. Compared to LSD, psilocybin is 100 - 200 times weaker, and mescaline (peyote) is about 4,000 times weaker.

Hallucinogens can lead to extreme anxiety and lack of reality at the height of the drug experience ("bad trips"). These experiences can come back as a "flashback," even without using the drug again. Such experiences typically occur during times of increased stress, and tend to occur less often and intensely after stopping the drugs.

STIMULANTS ("speed," "crack," "coke," "snow," "crank," "go," "speedball," "crystal," "cross-tops," "yellow jackets")

Cocaine

The abuse of cocaine increased dramatically in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but is now on the decline.

Cocaine may be breathed in through the nose ("snorting"), or dissolved in water and taken through a vein (intravenously). When mixed with heroin for IV use, the combination is called a "speedball."

Through a simple chemical procedure, cocaine may be changed into a smokeable form known as freebase or crack. Smoking produces an instant and intense sense of joy (euphoria), which is attractive to abusers. Other effects include:

Feelings of increased confidence and energy

Less inhibition

Local numbness

Powerful stimulation of the central nervous system

Increased use of and addiction to cocaine probably occur because it produces a very pleasurable high that is very short lived. This encourages the user to use the drug more often or regularly to get the desired effects.

Both the need to use larger amounts of the drugs to get the same effect (tolerance) and dependence may occur with regular cocaine use. Regular users may have:

Depression

Loss of interest in school, work, family, and friends

Memory loss

Mood swings

Sleep problems

Social withdrawal

Because heavy use may cause paranoia, cocaine users may become violent.

AMPHETAMINES

During the 1950s and 1960s, amphetamines were often prescribed for conditions such as fatigue, obesity, and mild depression. Such use has stopped because the drugs are very addictive, and are now considered controlled substances.

Over-the-counter (OTC) amphetamine look-alike drugs are often abused. These drugs typically contain caffeine and other stimulants, and are sold as appetite suppressants or stay-awake/stay-alert aids.

If taken in high doses, these OTC drugs may cause the same high and other effects that occur with amphetamines. Regular users may have:

Dilated pupils

Irritability

Restlessness

Skin flushing

Sleep disturbances

Tremors

Weight loss

INHALANTS

Inhalant use became popular with young teens in the 1960s with "glue sniffing." Since then, a greater variety of inhalants have become popular. Inhalant use typically involves younger teens or school age children. Groups of children will use inhalants usually as an experiment.

Commonly abused inhalants include:

Aerosols for deodorants or hair sprays

Cleaning fluids

Gasoline

Liquid typewriter correction fluid

Model glue

Spray paints

The chemicals are poured into a plastic bag or soaked into rags, then breathed in. The drugs are absorbed through the respiratory tract and cause an altered mental state within 5 - 15 minutes.

Negative effects of inhalant abuse include:

Brain damage

Convulsions

Liver or kidney damage

Nerve damage ( peripheral neuropathy)

Sudden death

Most inhalant use occurs among teens or preteens who do not have access to illegal drugs or alcohol.

OPIATES, OPIOIDS, AND NARCOTICS

Opiates come from opium poppies. These drugs include morphine and codeine. Opioids are artificial substances that have the same effect as morphine or codeine.

Opiates and opioids include:

Heroin

Hydromorphone

Oxycodone

Meperidine

Methadone

Propoxyphene

All of these substances, natural or man-made, are considered narcotics. Used as painkillers, these drugs:

Change perception of painful stimuli

Decrease anxiety

Promote a relaxed state (sedation)

Because heroin is commonly injected into a vein (used intravenously), there are health concerns about sharing contaminated needles among IV drug users. Complications of sharing contaminated needles include hepatitis, HIV infection, and AIDS.

STAGES OF JUVENILE DRUG USE

There are several stages of drug use. Young people seem to move more quickly through the stages than do adults.

Experimental use -- typically involves peers, done for recreational use; the user may enjoy defying parents or other authority figures.

Regular use -- the user misses more and more school or work; worries about losing drug source; uses drugs to "fix" negative feelings; begins to stay away from friends and family; may change friends to those who are regular users; shows increased tolerance and ability to "handle" the drug.

Daily preoccupation -- the user loses any motivation; does not care about school and work; behavior changes become obvious; thinking about drug use is more important than all other interests, including relationships; the user becomes secretive; may begin dealing drugs to help support habit; use of other, harder drugs may increase; legal problems may increase.

Dependence -- cannot face daily life without drugs; denies problem; physical condition gets worse; loss of "control" over use; may become suicidal; financial and legal problems get worse; may have broken ties with family members or friends by this time.

TREATMENT OVERVIEW

As with any other area of medicine, the least intensive treatment should be the starting point.

Residential treatment programs monitor and address possible withdrawal symptoms and behaviors. These programs use behavior modification techniques, which are designed to get users to recognize their behaviors.

Treatment programs include counseling both for the person (and perhaps family), and in group settings. Drug abuse treatment programs have a long after-care part (when the user is released from the medical facility), and provide peer support.

Drug addiction is a serious and complicated health condition that requires both physical and psychological treatment and support. It is important to be evaluated by a trained professional to determine the best care.

CALL YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER

If you are concerned about the possibility of getting addicted to any prescribed medications

If you are concerned about possible drug abuse by yourself or a family member

If you are interested in getting more information on drug abuse

If you are seeking treatment of drug abuse for yourself or a family member

Also seek out information and support from local 12-step support groups, such as:

Al-anon/Alateen

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

Narcotics Anonymous (NA)

Other support groups include:

LifeRing Recovery

Moderation Management

SMART Recovery

How-To: Starting a Spring Wildflower Garden

If you're planning on adding some wildflowers to your Spring gardening, I have some tips to get you started.

If you're starting your wildflower garden on an area that's already grassy or full of unwanted plants, you can kill the plants by putting down about six to eight layers of wet newspaper. After a month to a month and a half, you'll have a weed- and grass-free area to plant seeds or seedlings upon. You can shred the newspaper to use as mulch (it's good for your soil), or, you can compost it.

If you're planting a small area, you can use seedlings instead of seeds.

Make sure to sow your seeds when danger of frost is past.

For more hints, just read more.

If you plant perennial seeds in spring or summer, do not expect flowers to bloom that year.

Annuals will grow and bloom quickly, but will then die with the first frost. To make your wildflower garden pretty the first year, you may want to supplement perennial wildflowers with some annuals.

Wildflowers look best in a semi-natural spot, such as on the edges of your lawn, close to trees, or by a field.

Wildflowers love sunny spots, so plan accordingly!

For convenience's sake, you may want to make sure your garden hose can reach your wildflowers.

Some of your wildflower seeds may germinate in as few as eight days, while others may not appear for months. That's part of the fun though, and it will give you something to look forward to every day!

Source

Come Story Telling with me!!! The Completed Story

I hope you all enjoyed this new feature as much as I did! Your wild imaginations made for a great story line! To read the completed tale you all helped create, read more

I buckled my seat belt, lowered the shade, and put my eye mask story short, they join the mile high club when he realizes that she's his first girlfriend with a major makeover. (I'm talking complete overhaul, from Susie Bookworm to Bunny McBoobie). Of course I don't find out about this until my wedding night, when I dump his sorry butt instead of having a night of romance and rapture....so I'm in Cancun alone and heartbroken, when I decide, screw Cancun, it's full of American tourists. I need to get away from everyone involved with my wedding day. That's why I booked this flight to Thailand. I'm dying to see the beaches where the movie the Beach was filmed. If only I could find Leo waiting there for me. Although I knew I should be using this time for some much needed self reflection, I again said screw that -- I need to start having some fun. I can't sit around and mope the entire time I am in Thailand, I need to LIVE! My first day on the beach, I cozied up at the bar at my hotel, ordered a Sing Ha when a Taye Diggs dead ringer said, "I don't mean to bother you but can I buy you a drink?"

Immediately, my mind floated to that movie with Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale. If I said yes to this guy, would he later put cocaine in my backpack and watch me get arrested and thrown in a Thai jail? Then I remembered the second Bridget Jones. Can't be all that bad can it? I looked Taye Diggs' doppelganger straight in the eyes and said, "I'd love a sex on the beach." With a devilish smile, and a suppressed laugh, he ordered, and winking at the waiter, said, "don't keep this lady waiting!" I was so flattered, and a girlish wave of excitement came over me, and just as I was thinking about how the day I dump my fiance I meet a new man, my drink came, and my elbow knocked it off the counter and onto his shoes until his girlfriend walks up. and says "What the Hell is going on here" in the snottiest tone of voice known to man.

I was extremely embarrassed from the spilled drink and she took my flushed cheeks as a sign of hanky panky between us. She launched into a rant about how he never respects her and this is why they are breaking up for the last time. She then turned on her heels and walked off. He said to me "sorry you had to witness that" Well that totally killed the mood so I said, "yeah, me too, but you'd better go after her." Seeing his girlfriend's retreat reminded of my own recent retreat, and I didn't want to trade one liar for another. "Excuse me, I said" and carried my new drink onto the beach. I was ready for some alone time and a nice walk, but it wasn't in the cards. Within minutes, a little boy wondered up to me "you buy pearls from me" he said with a huge smile on his face and held up some poorly strung plastic beads. "how old are you?" i asked him. "special deal! just for you!" he says, waving the beads around as if they are mystical. "no beads" I say "but here's $20. go home now it's late". he considers the money for a moment and then runs off without so much as a thank you. "come back here!" i hear a woman call "you no good little thief!" she looks after the boy and says to me "did he sell you MY PEARLS!?" I play dumb "who?" she doesn't bite "I saw you talking to that little thief!" "oh he was only a boy" I say. she runs after him, screaming about her precious pearls. "thank you" I hear from the boy as he scurried off. I looked down at myself, my hair was a mess, I smelt like tanning oil from being at the pool all day and I definitely needed a shower. I decided to call it a quits and began walking back to my hotel room when I think my heart may have stopped.I mean an abrupt stop at what I could have sworn was the hottest man in all of Thailand. He was on his cell phone and had a bag over his shoulder; it looked like he was just checking in. It took me about 30 seconds to realize that I had been standing there staring at him like a fan to brad pitt. I immediately snapped out of it and began walking towards my destination (elevators) which coincidentally happened to be right by him. As I swayed over in the most feminine walk I could stir up...whisked my hair over my shoulder and got ready to flash a smile, I noticed. a gold band around his left ring finger. As I felt the crushing blow, he looked over at me and grinned. His teeth were shining white, which only made my disappointment grow. I hurried toward the elevators, and pressed the button that would summon the machine. I waited, shifting my weight from side to side, I looked over and the man with the ring stood next to me. I could smell his expensive cologne wafting over and I nervously pressed the button again. He leaned toward me. "Do not be swayed by the ring." He whispered in a heavy accent. "It is my grandfather's wedding ring. When he died, he left it to me. It's the only finger it fits on, deceiving I know but it let's me weed out the good girls from the bad ones.

After letting out a huge sigh of release, to myself of course, I knew I had to act fast. "I am glad you said something, I was beginning to think all the good ones were taken". Did I really just say that, I thought to myself, without even knowing this mans name? "My name is Phoebe by the way" as I reached out my hand He smiled widely, took my hand, and gave me a steady, firm handshake. "Hmm..." I thought. "Now, this seems like a real respectable man." As the elevator doors opened, he motioned his hand for me to go first. I smiled, and we entered a very crowded elevator, full of people that smelled like musty water. Suddenly, e whispered into my ear, "can I buy you a drink after I drop off my bags?" Without thinking twice, I replied, "meet you in the lobby in 30!" Before he had a chance to respond, the elevator doors opened on my floor, I winked a goodbye, and ran down the hallway to my room so I could jump in the shower and make a quick change. So, I'm in and out of the shower lickadee-split, running around the room furiously getting ready when I stop and think "this is too good to be true." Um, yeah, wait a second, that's exactly what it is, it's too good to be true. Something seemed a little off about that whole interaction. Oh well, cest la vie! I have nothing to lose. Just as I'm throwing on my shoes and praising myself for getting ready so fast, I see that the message light on the phone in my hotel room is blinking. Hmmmm, that's strange, no one knows I'm here. So I pick up the phone to listen to the message, and it is the wrong number. I transfer the message back to the front desk and head out the door. As I stroll through the lobby I see he is not there. I sit in a chair, again contemplating if this is a good idea. I just ran away from a big mistake minutes before I was to walk down the isle. All of my family is probably wondering where I am and what happened. I decide to stroll back to the lobby looking at the industrial and downtown scenery. Telling myself: I wish it wasn't this complicated, but i guess i'll be patient." While i was looking at the scenery, i finally spotted her walking with a midnight blue gown with cobalt blue heels that make me think of her as the universe in the night that glitter with stars. I was suddenly hypnotize but thought, wow I didn't realize Angelina Jolie is here at this hotel. I wonder if she is doing a photo shoot or baby shopping. As I watched her from afar, I felt someone touch my arm. I turned suddenly to see the guy from the elevator standing by my side. "You ready for that cocktail, Phoebe?" He says, his voice soothing, deep, and sexy. I smile and say, "Absolutely" only once i got halfway into the word I burped! Seriously? omg. I felt my face burning from the shade of red it is, and then he burps too. I immediately had to suppress a giggle. I said "Well, excuse us both" and I held is arm as we walked to the bar. I couldn't quit thinking he must be a nice guy to immediately come to my aid like that. But I must keep a clear head. we just met! I just left someone at the altar and these thoughts i am having about a total stranger are ridiculous. I let go of his arm as we take a seat. Immediately our eyes met and something about them told me he was kind. He smiled as he reached across the table to brush the hair from my eyes. "Thank you" I mumbled, unable to fully comprehend what was happening to me. "So, tell me your story Phoebe",I beamed inside and thought, ME...he wants to know about ME. Just then he started to tell me about his Thai dance troop. He asked if I had ever danced or worn a costume. I told him never and he said I looked like just the kind of girl to play the part of the monkey in his troop. He even ordered a banana drink for me. Just as I was ready to accept, my cell phone rang. It was so loud it made me jump. It was none other than my devious, once-fiance.

I saw a look of disappointment on my date's face as I said "Just one second. I'll be right back, Aaron." I answered the call and exasperatedly said, "What? What is it now?" The fiance from hell replied "Phoebe, I.. I need some help I think you had my return ticket in your bag. My flight home leaves later today and I can't find it anywhere." "Just like, you," I sniped, "only calling when you need something. And anyway, what if I do have it? How is that going to help you get out of town today?" "Good point," he said, "and Phoebe, I didn't call because I lost my ticket. I called to say I love you and I'm an idiot and, well." "That's all well and good, but it's over," I said. "Have a nice life, I'll leave your ticket at the front desk."

Jerk.

As I hung up the phone I realized, wait, he has no idea where I am so leaving it at the front desk isn't going to be doing him any good.. oh well, to hell with him, I need to move on, and the one I want to move on with is sitting at my table inside. I walked back to my table and sat next to my lovely stranger. "Is everything alright?" he asked with utter sincerity 'Everything is great! I am ready for that drink!' Then I proceeded to tell him a little about myself. I did not talk about the past few days because I had decided if this went any further it would just be a vacation fling.

After 4-5 drinks he suggested dinner. I agreed and we walked the 2 blocks to this fabulous seafood restaurant. he walk to the restaurant with Aaron felt so natural. Laughing, and walking arm and arm, it was picture-esque I suppose you could say. The warm night and lamp-lit sidewalks only added to the dream-like, two-block walk. We finally arrived at the restaurant. The ambiance was filled with the buzz of busy chatter, the clang of silverware to plates, and the exotic mingling of spices mixed in with oysters, prawns, and catfish. We sat down to dinner and began what ended up being a very pleasant evening. We danced under the stars to a live jazz band at "Chandra's"(the local hot spot) enjoyed each other's walk down memory lane, and finally shared a passionate, yet respectful display of affection until Aaron finally walked me to my room. No sooner had I opened the door when all of a sudden my cell phone rang again. It was the loser in Cancun that had no ticket! He seemed like he really missed me at this point but who wouldn't being in a foreign country alone and with a hurricane coming. No ticket, no passport, no wedding; too bad he was such a creep to me. Now he must be thinking I would be suckered into whatever was up his sleeve. I stared at my phone for a second and flipped it open, "Yes?" "Phoebe, come on. You gotta forgive me. I just need my damn ticket and you're being selfish not letting me have it."

"Oh well, I don't even know how to send it to you. Why don't you just buy a new one? I don't have time for this." I snapped then paused for a moment. "...And selfish? I'm not selfish. I'm not the one who went stir crazy and joined the mile-high club with some prissy, fake breasted airline stewardess!" The rest of the conversation was him babbling, and finally I told him I'd end this civilly. I told him I didn't want him trying to contact me anymore. And I hung up.

"Sorry about that again... although this is a lot to take for one night, I really hope my ex isn't changing your opinion of me. I had a wonderful time with you tonight, it was actually the right time in, wow, so long I can't even begin to pin point it, where I actually had fun! Thank you."

"Phoebe, I think your delightful, and no, this night only made me respect you more. Goodnight, I also had a wonderful time with you, can we do it again tomorrow night? I would love to see you again."

A rush of emotion fell over my entire body as I replied, "Absolutely, I would love to see you again. Sleep well and I will see you tomorrow."

Needless to say, I slept like a baby.....
