Colorful, Lightweight Laptop Stand Travels Anywhere

I'd like to say that I do most of my work sitting upright at my desk, but in reality, that's not always the case. You're more likely to find me curled up on the couch working on my computer, or propped up watching a movie in bed. I've also created makeshift work spaces in airports while waiting for flights, my kitchen floor, and even on the city bus. Of course, with all of this mobility comes poor posture, and more often than not, a hot lap.

The Lightweight Laptop Stand ($26) is perfect for use anywhere, and since it is so light, it's simple to toss in your bag and take anywhere. My favorite is the bright orange, but it also comes in fun pink and more serious gray or black.

View 5 Photos ›

The Dave Scale: Cheap, Not So Cheap, Exorbitant

What recession? Remember last week, when I pinpointed Target's pricier version of my beloved Dave laptop stand from Ikea?

Yeah. I can't exactly call Target's stand expensive, now that I've found the ridiculously expensive Nestable by Jasper Morrison for furniture giant Vitra - it retails for a whopping $845.

Wipe the sleep out of your eyes; that's eight hundred and forty-five bones.

The material list is polyurethane, powder-coated steel, and die-cast aluminum; there doesn't appear to be gold or diamonds in there, so why the high, high price? It's not bad-lookin', but wowee, that's the first simple laptop stand I've seen that comes close to laptop price.

Nonconventional, Yet Handy Laptop Stands

I'm always hearing about ingenious and inventive ways people manage to use their hot laptops on their laps - whether it be angled on the couch arm, a pillow, or a TV tray, there's always some sort of protective barrier involved. I myself use a variety of things, including a basic breakfast-in-bed tray (when I'm in bed) and my Dave laptop stand when I'm cross-legged on the couch. If you're still looking for a new stand for either your desk, bed, couch, or coffee table, here are some chic designs that may do the trick!

Laptop Stands: Protect Your Computer And Your Self

Given the widespread fears of WiFi's potential health risks, the fact that laptops have a tendency to overheat when placed on non-linear surfaces and studies that show hot laptops can cause infertility in men it's paramount that you invest in a laptop stand.

We're all guilty of the laptop in the lap offense - it's called laptop for a reason, right? Whether you find yourself sitting in front of the TV with your laptop or you like to curl up under the covers while cruising the web you can protect yourself with a simple stand that keeps your laptop's fan circulating and keeps the device off your body and away from your sensitive body parts. (Seriously, the laptop burn stories are not pretty!)

I use a small "breakfast in bed" tray disguised as a laptop table that I got at Bed, Bath and Beyond. It's light, portable and big enough for me to rest my laptop, magazines and drink on. Check out a selection of my favorite stand options below.

Higher Priced and Hotter or Cheaper and Chicer?

The $25 Dave laptop table from Ikea still holds a special place in my heart - as well as a special place in both my bedroom and living room (tee-hee). But look out Mr. Dave, there's a sexier laptop stand in town and he's popping up at Target stores across the country. Unlike the Dave laptop table, the Ergonomic laptop desk from Target is made of metal in a laminate walnut finish, which you'll pay for with the table costing $50. The wood version would definitely look a lot nicer in my living room, but for now, I just can't justify the upgrade.

The Best Laptop Stand Money Can Buy

This past weekend I ventured off to Ikea for an Easter weekend shopping excursion and I totally hit the jackpot. Feast your eyes on these Dave laptop tables that are perfect for couch laptop users like myself. Laptop on lap = too hot, laptop on coffee table = too low, laptop on the Dave laptop stand = just right. For only $25, yes the best $25 you'll ever spend (trust me), these sturdy, adjustable (height and angle) tables hold your laptop exactly where you want them for all your typing and Internet surfing needs. And if you have a few friends over and need an extra side table for food or drinks? They can be used for that as well! Available in black or white and super easy to assemble.

The BookArc ($50) shown here is great for those who use an external screen with their Macs but want to free up some desk space. To make sure you get the best fit for your laptop, the BookArc comes in three different sizes and includes scratch-free, silicone cushions on the bottom part so you don't have to worry about scratching your lovely wooden desk.

Linea Laptop Stand: Simple And Ergonomic

We all know the importance of using laptop stands to keep our laptops off our laps - they keep our machines cool, protect us from fears of WiFi's potential health risks and the many infertility risks hot laptops pose for men.

I'm partial to simple stands and trays that were designed for use in bed or on the couch, but Gabriel Kornreich's Linea is equally promising. It offers a simple ergonomic tweak to make your tabletop laptop use more comfortable. The raised stand not only allows air to better circulate under the computer, but it also allows improved viewing angles on the screen that are healthier for your neck. It costs $36.
Laptop Fan Stand Lets You Work In Odd Positions

We all know how important it is to keep our laptops off our laps and bed covers so they can stay ventilated and cool and we all know what happens when we don't, but are we really so lazy that we need stands that let us lie flat and work on our computers? Thanko has created an aluminum/steel laptop stand that's USB powered and features two fans that blow room-temperature air into your hot laptop. While the stand allows you to lay back in bed, you can also use it in more practical positions - such as on a table, sitting up in bed or in a chair. I find the notion of working at the computer while laying down almost laughable, but I do like the simplicity and practicality of this stand, which because of the fact that it's USB powered won't require any additional outlets.
