Recreate LC's Double Braids With Tips From Her Stylist!

Just when we thought there couldn't possibly be any more ways to wear braids, who better than trend-setting Lauren Conrad to bring us back in? At the Hollywood Style Awards last night in LA, the former reality show star styled her signature waist-length extensions in not just one side-braid, but two intersecting plaits. Celebrity stylist Byron Williams of the Byron and Tracey Salon created the look for Lauren, using her multihued frock as inspiration.

"We wanted to get it as narrow as possible because we didn’t want to overwhelm the dress," Williams said. "It was side-parted, and we French braided both sides. It’s kind of half-up, half-down." Even though it isn't permanent, (yep, her brown hair was just a wig for a photoshoot on Friday), I welcome the change from her typical long plaits. However, for those of you prefer LC as a blonde, have no fear, she's already back to her long, blonde style. Although we won't see her on The Hills anymore, she is getting ready to promote her new book LA Candy across America. All About Lauren Conrad's Extensions With Stylist Kristin Ess

Kristin Ess of Warren-Tricomi Salon in LA has styled everyone from Rachel McAdams to the runway models at Marc Jacobs, but she's also known for her work on The Hills, and for Lauren Conrad's styles in particular. So when I found out that Lauren's perfectly natural-looking hair was actually Kristin's perfect extensions, I really wanted to speak with her to get the scoop about them. You created LC's extensions and her look. How did you start out using them on her?

The thing about extensions is that you have to have the exact right kind for your hair. When I started working with Lauren, she had a thicker kind of extension, and because she went to so many events, we were styling her hair a lot. Because of the texture of her hair, though, we kept having to hide the extension if she wanted to put it into a ponytail. We always had to leave a little bit of a poof and couldn’t do a tight ponytail, either, because the extension would pop out sometimes, or you would just see a lump. We were working around the extensions, basically, instead of the hair working around us. I told her, "Listen, I really want to put my thinner extensions in your hair." She had never heard of them, but she said "OK, I trust you. Let’s do it." So, we took the thick extensions out, we put the thinner ones in, and she's never taken them out since.

I had no idea they were extensions until recently.

You know what's so funny? I do a lot of interviews about Lauren’s hair, and sometimes people are like, "What do you mean she has extensions? Oh, I thought that was her hair." Meanwhile, people don’t realize that her hair is actually about to her collarbone.

How do you keep the extensions seamless and blend in the ends when her actual length is that drastically different? That’s hard to do!

Particularly with the extensions - first and foremost is color matching. I pride myself on that, because I can color match your hair exactly. You can always see extensions when they aren't perfectly color matched. So that's one, and the other is the placement. There's a certain way that you have to place the hair, and a pattern that you put them in. To have extensions look natural, you have to leave a little bit more room in certain places and put a few closer together. The reason that the ones I use are so great is that they're in two and half inch panels, and I can basically place them wherever I want.

How-To: Lauren Conrad's Twisty Braids

Just when you think you've seen nearly every type of braid imaginable, leave it to Lauren Conrad to add her own twist. LC's time on The Hills may be over but that's not stopping the young star from pursuing other endeavors.

At last night's book signing for LA Candy and appearance on The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien, Lauren busted out the braids again. But this time, she chose dual French braids that looped together in the back, forming a loose, chic bun. Recently I got the scoop behind her iconic braids, and now, here are some tips on re-creating last night's updo version.

Get the how-to when you read more.

For a shiny effect with slight hold, apply a glossing gel to damp hair and blow-dry. Try Nivea Diamond Gloss Styling Gel ($12).
Part the hair down the middle. Starting from one side of the part, loosely French braid the hair all the way down, stopping the braiding at to the nape. Secure with an elastic band. Repeat on the other side. Note how Lauren's stylist only braided hair along the sides, leaving hair from the crown down to the neck out of the mix.
Leaving the two braids out, gather the hair from the crown down to the neck into a ponytail. Secure with an elastic band and twist hair around it, securing with bobby pins into the base of the pony.
Finish up by twisting and wrapping the two ends around the "bun" you created in the third step, using bobby pins to secure. Add a spritz of hair spray (such as David Babaii for WildAid Light Styling Spray, $12.50) for a little hold.

Trend Alert: Makin' Waves At The 2009 MTV Movie Awards

On Sunday night, Hollywood's 'it' girls dazzled in stylish, on-trend outfits and amazing hair and makeup. After looking at all of the photos from the event, I noticed that most of the women wore their hair parted in the centre with loose waves - a look that's been a red carpet staple for the past few years. Whilst Lauren Conrad added in her own special plait and Vanessa Hudgens had heavy fringe, overall, the hairstyle is our modern, undone version of 1940's structured waves and carefully crafted pin curls.

What was once regarded as a messy and unkempt updo is actually très chic nowadays. It's popular because of its practicality. It's a great way to get your hair off your face and neck for sports or just for a stroll during the hot Summer days.

Simply pull all of your hair back in a high ponytail. Before you loop a snag-less elastic around your hair for the second or third time (depending on how thick your hair is), do not pull hair all of the way through - only pull it halfway through. This will create a loose loop. If your hair is layered, pieces of hair should fall, as will any wisps or short bangs - which is what makes this style so relaxed.

Lauren Conrad Stops Off For a Touchup

Lauren Conrad paid a visit to LA's Warren Tricomi salon yesterday afternoon. She got her hair extensions changed, though she didn't look too thrilled to be caught in the act. LC's hair always looks fantastic - it's even a work of art when she's crying, though she'll need to be even more coiffed for an upcoming TV appearance. The Hills is going on without her, but Lauren will be playing judge alongside Tyra soon on America's Next Top Model.
