How-To: Go Subtle With Lavender

Earlier today, I showed you how to decorate with lavender walls. If you're not ready to make the commitment to that much lavender, though, you can always work with accents. Try using textiles in a lavender shade. Or, paint the interior of a cabinet or cupboard with your favorite lavender shade. Accent decor is also an option as well. If you're looking for a feminine, cool color, lavender is always a good bet. This palest purple shade is named for the pretty flower of the same name. With shades ranging from a brighter purple to gray-tinted pale lavenders to lavender pinks, there's plenty to choose from when it comes to shades of lavender. You know I've been waiting for someone to wear my favorite lavender Marchesa dress from the designer's Fall collection. And that someone was Fab favorite Penelope Cruz. Alas, it's ill-fitting. Speaking of ill, Penelope otherwise looks radiant at the Broken Embraces premiere after a bout of food poisoning. From the sweet lavender color, to the jeweled bodice and back, and the drapes and ruching, this dress has it all. I just wish a proper fitting took place. Can you see past the fit and into the fabulous?

Come Party With Me: Bachelorette - Drinks

If you're hosting a party - like Ronda's belly dancing-themed bachelorette - that begins in the early evening and carries on until the wee hours of morning at a second location, skip the shots and hard alcohol. You don't want guests getting too wasted too quickly, and you'll save money by not having to purchase a bunch of liquor.

At a bachelorette, serve a girly, bubbly cocktail like this lavender and peach bellini. Its vibrant color matches the sunny Mediterranean appetizer menu, and the easy recipe makes a large batch. Lavender and Peach Bellini
From Epicurious

Ingredients

1 part peach puree
2 parts Prosecco or another sparkling wine
1 pinch of edible, nontoxic, dried or fresh lavender

Directions

Place the puree in the bottom of a champagne glass.
Carefully pour in the sparkling wine.
Don't stir, but use a spoon to pull the puree up along the sides of the glass, so that you won't lose the bubbles.
Decorate with the lavender.

Serving size varies.

Happy Hour: Lavender Martini

Much like hibiscus, lavender has become an increasingly popular ingredient at the table. I'll admit that when I first tried lavender in food, I wasn't crazy about it, as I'd always associated the flower's aroma with spa treatments.

Lavender first began to grow on me last November, when I tried Loft, a new line of flavored organic liqueurs and proclaimed the line's lavender infusion as my favorite. When a friend sent me a gift of lavender-and-thyme cookie mix for my birthday, I discovered I could appreciate those, too. I realized that, when used sparingly, lavender can lend an herbaceous, lemony quality to food that's floral, yet not overwhelmingly so.

Lavender Martini
From Loft Liqueurs

Ingredients

1 ounce Loft Lavender Liqueur
3 ounces vodka
Ice

Directions

Combine vodka and lavender liqueur in a shaker with ice.
Shake vigorously, strain and serve in a martini glass.

Makes 1 martini.
