Head to the Library For the Best-Selling Business Books

Give yourself the cheapest business education this Fall by visiting your local library and signing out the best-selling books of the season. Expanding your horizons can never hurt when it's free, and you might just gain something from dipping a toe into the business section.

A library card is a must have, in my opinion, but if your schedule doesn't allow for time to peruse the public shelves, The Wall Street Journal has a handful of alternatives that might work for you. The downside: they'll cost you.

Paperspine.com: WSJ compares the service to Netflix, which sends books to your mailbox for a fee. There are no late fees like you'd get at the library and two-way shipping is free, and monthly plans start at $14.95 for up to three books at a time. If there's a title you want for your collection, members can purchase over 400,000 unused titles up to 50 percent off.

Bookswim.com: The starter plan lets you rent up to three books a month for $19.98 without shipping or late fees, and if you can't bear to give it back, you can buy the book for second-hand prices.

Booksfree.com: With plans starting at $10.99 a month, the service rents out paperbacks and audiobooks in CD or MP3 formats.

Audible.com: Download audio books, podcasts, and audible magazines from this Amazon owned site. It costs $7.49 for the first three months and $14.95 per month thereafter.

Librarians to Patrons: Shhhower!

Have any of you Bay Area readers ever been to the Berkeley Public Library? It's a beautiful historical building, but some days has an acquired smell that can't exactly be attributed to old books.

Well, Schaumburg Township District Library in Illinois has now added "offensive bodily odors" to the forbidden list, which already includes talking, running, and beverages! The library says it will kick people out if their stenches disrupt others' use of the facility.

While a pleasant smell would make for a more enjoyable library visit, you could argue that the ban discriminates against poor people. If people don't have access to showers, I'd bet that they don't have access to a computer either. . . unless they can go to the library.

Junior Jetset: Let the Library Help You Out

Hollywood Video has been my friend and foe for my last two family vacations. In an effort to make my travels temper tantrum free, I rented Elmo, Thomas the Train, Tom & Jerry, and Clifford the Dog DVDs. Unfortunately, my trip dates make it impossible to return them on time. The $12 charge is worth the rentals, but the accompanying late fees make it debatable.

On my recent trip to our local library, I stumbled upon a fantastic kiddie DVD selection. Surprised and elated, I asked the clerk about the "check out" policy. You can rent up to six DVDs for a seven day time period - FREE! Anticipating another long travel weekend ahead, I am heading there tomorrow for a slew of cartoon videos to entertain my wee one. Before you run to your local video store, hit your closest library branch.

Get the Look: Timeless Library

Whether it's thanks to the books, the sense of history, or the quiet environs, I've always found libraries one of the most comforting interior spaces I've ever inhabited. Give me any library, I'm not picky - it could be a university library, my neighborhood public library, or the library room at an older friend's grand home - I'm happy to just sit in a big, comfy chair among books.

To create your own timeless library look, start with the most important element - books! You may want to add some built-in shelves, or secure book shelves to the walls of the room. Add a worn, elegant Persian rug, some overstuffed library chairs, and a substantial, preferably antique table, and you're getting closer to realizing this look.

A chandelier is always a nice touch, even if it's simply a candle chandelier, such as the one in the photo. Don't forget to add some foliage plants, whose oxygen production will help to stimulate your noggin. Potted palms or orchids are both solid choices. I also love the look of maps in libraries, whether they're in globe or flat form - it's a nice reference tool for any historical or geographical-based texts you may be reading. Throw in some beautiful paintings, and an eyecatching throw pillow or two, and you have the makings of a beautiful, comfortable, and timeless library.

Midday Muse: Inspired by Libraries

This past weekend, I finally visited my local library and picked up a few books and DVDs (and paid my late fines). While my little neighborhood library isn't nearly as glamorous as the George Peabody Library in Baltimore, MD, it still is a source of comfort, simply because I'm surrounded by books (plus my library has a great open-beamed ceiling).
