2009 American Music Awards: Selena Gomez

Adorable Disney-ite Selena Gomez always looks pretty and age-appropriate when she walks the red carpet. Tonight, she went elegant, wearing her curls in this lovely, loose bun and letting tendrils fall free to frame both sides of her face. I love that her eye makeup was extremely simple and that her lip gloss and blush were both almost sheer. I think she struck a good balance of red carpet glam and young-lady makeup, but what's your opinion? Is this just right for a 17-year-old, or is it too much?

2009 Primetime Emmy Awards: Christina Applegate

At last year's awards, Christina Applegate went for bold, red lips and va-voom hair, but this year, it's all about the soft touches. Instead of a tight, pulled-back bun, Christina's hair is styled in a loose, low-slung chignon, and her makeup, while heavy-handed for the camera's flashes, is peaches-and-cream all the way. She's up for an Emmy tonight for her work on the now defunct Samantha Who?, but when it comes to her beauty choices this evening, are you thinking, "Who's that girl?" or is it not her best look?

Trend Alert: The Temptresses of Twilight Go All Up at the TCA's

There's something very sexy about showing off your corroded artery around vampires, and the leading ladies of the Twilight Saga did just that at last night's Teen Choice Awards. Ashley Greene went for a twisty polished updo whilst Kristen Stewart made the most of her Joan Jett mullet by spiking the front and securing the back into a ponytail. Nikki Reed however, opted for a more romantic look with a low, loose bun and soft, waved tendrils framing her face.

The girls all looked stunning with perfect makeup and great outfits. I like how they uniformly had their hair back too. They definitely stood out on the red carpet, as most of the other attendees wore their hair down and parted in the centre.

Rainy weather didn't stop Emma Watson from looking fresh-faced and chic at the London premiere of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. In fact, the loose updo style, complemented with braids and a red hair accent, is perfect for beating warm-weather humidity.

Now, I realize many of you might be sick of hearing about braids and headbands, two trends that have been popular for some time thanks to the ladies of The Hills and Gossip Girl, but you've got to appreciate how Emma turned the look into something fresh. How-To: Lauren Conrad's Twisty Braids

Just when you think you've seen nearly every type of braid imaginable, leave it to Lauren Conrad to add her own twist. LC's time on The Hills may be over but that's not stopping the young star from pursuing other endeavors.

At last night's book signing for LA Candy and appearance on The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien, Lauren busted out the braids again. But this time, she chose dual French braids that looped together in the back, forming a loose, chic bun. Recently I got the scoop behind her iconic braids, and now, here are some tips on re-creating last night's updo version.

For a shiny effect with slight hold, apply a glossing gel to damp hair and blow-dry. Try Nivea Diamond Gloss Styling Gel ($12).
Part the hair down the middle. Starting from one side of the part, loosely French braid the hair all the way down, stopping the braiding at to the nape. Secure with an elastic band. Repeat on the other side. Note how Lauren's stylist only braided hair along the sides, leaving hair from the crown down to the neck out of the mix.
Leaving the two braids out, gather the hair from the crown down to the neck into a ponytail. Secure with an elastic band and twist hair around it, securing with bobby pins into the base of the pony.
Finish up by twisting and wrapping the two ends around the "bun" you created in the third step, using bobby pins to secure. Add a spritz of hair spray (such as David Babaii for WildAid Light Styling Spray, $12.50) for a little hold.

How-To: Fake Sanaa Lathan's Braid-Wrapped Bun

In between checking out the fashion and the beauty while watching Thursday's NAACP Image Awards, I also hoped to spot a fun hairstyle to test out at home. Since she's already a favorite regardless of her beauty look, I was happy to see Sanaa's glamorous updo on the red carpet. Even though I'm fairly certain she got some "help" with that braid, and possibly part of the bun, I wanted to come up with a take on this style that we could re-create at home without hair extensions.

I grabbed some pins and rubber bands, got creative, and found it's actually possible to fake this style on my shoulder length hair. Sadly Mr. Bella wasn't around to take a picture of the back of my head, but I've come up with suggestions.

Before you get started, I'll explain how we're faking it because I know it can be easier to visualize a hair style than follow instructions: Instead of making one big braid to go around, you'll do four smaller braids and then hide the ends under the bun to make it appear to be a single braid wrapped around. Start by pretending to form a ponytail where you want the bun to fall and hold with one hand, but don't add an elastic yet.
While holding the ponytail with that hand, use the other hand to pull our four sections of hair around the ponytail. You should end up with about 1/2 of your hair still in your ponytail hand and four loose pieces of hair that total the other 1/2 of your hair separated out.
Take an elastic and form a makeshift bun out of the ponytail. You'll undo and fix it later, the point is to keep that hair out of the way for the time being.
Make four braids out of the four sections of hair. Try to start each braid close to the bun (i.e., don't pull the braid off too tight) and secure each with a small elastic at the ends.
Now grab some bobby pins and make a circle around your fake bun, pinning and tucking the ends.
Undo the bun and make a ponytail but tuck the ends under to make a loop. Just flatten and fluff and you're done!

Day-to-Night Hairstyle in a Flash

This Season’s Latest Trends For Beautiful Hair!
