Do Tell: How Long Does It Take You to Fall in Love?

According to new research, it's usually a man who says, "I love you" first. Yes, somebody actually studied this. The researchers reasoned that in general women have a more realistic view of relationships, and are thus, less likely to get carried away early on. On average, it takes a man about seven months to fall in love, while it takes cautious women a whole eight months. If you've ever been in love, how long did it take before you knew it?

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

Looking for some fresh picks to add to your Netflix queue? I've got you covered. Just take a peek at these three new releases coming out on DVD today.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra

Many of you said that you weren't psyched to see the slick action update on the classic toy in theaters, but perhaps you'll feel differently now that it is available to watch at home. G.I. Joe has that loud, flashy, blockbuster appeal which can make for a perfect weekend rental - even if it's pretty much mindless entertainment. (Plus, I know how much you love Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum!) Bonus: If you're a CGI geek, the special two-disc version includes a behind-the-scenes look at the special effects.

37%

Two more new releases when you read more.

I Love You Beth Cooper
Hayden Panettiere stars as the title character - the hottest girl in school and long-time crush of the film's nerdy hero, Denis. When Denis wins class valedictorian, he uses his graduation speech to profess his love to Beth. Lucky for him, the act of courage works in his favor, and Beth shows up at his house. You can pretty much guess what happens from there - her boyfriend is not pleased, threatens to beat Denis up, etc. - but the DVD features an alternate ending to spice things up. Critics panned its release, but if you're a devotee of the teen sex comedy genre, then this is one to put on your viewing checklist.

14%

Food Inc.

Ever wondered where the meal on your plate really comes from? Food Inc. is a documentary that breaks down America's food industry step by step - from the farms where it's produced, to the big brother-like companies that monopolize it, to the supermarket. It's an interesting - albeit frightening - insider's peek that is packed with expert info. (Even my health guru, FitSugar, gave it her stamp of approval.) Consider this your brain food for the week - but if I were you, I'd refrain from eating while you're watching it.

97%

New York, I Love You: A Jigsaw Puzzle That Doesn't Quite Fit

As a city with so much personality and penchant for possibility, it's no surprise that the follow-up to Paris, Je t'aime heads to New York. New York, I Love You is a tale of the connections and personal missteps that occur every single day in the city that never sleeps. It plays out like a movie version of a song mash-up: some story lines are linear and independent of the rest while other characters wander in and out of each other's lives. Throw an all-star cast in there, and you could possibly have a recipe for perfection.

Unfortunately, the ingredients don't blend together as well as I had hoped, and instead we're left with an engaging but bland look at a handful of trials and tribulations in relationships. To see what I mean, just read more.

Made up of a series of short films, New York, I Love You is an homage to the city as well as the residents who hold it near and dear to their hearts. The "anything can happen" theme is alive and well, as strangers become acquaintances and friends, putting so much emphasis on each and every interaction that we take part in on a regular basis.

You meet a few characters that represent New York well enough; Bradley Cooper is the guy who's constantly jumping into a cab the same time as someone else, Orlando Bloom is the struggling musician who turns to Central Park for inspiration, Hayden Christensen is the pick-pocket who's as sexy as he is dangerous. But sometimes it feels just a little too forced; like the film is primarily concerned with proving that New York is a melting pot. Rather than seeing a few love stories shine through stereotypes, I was more distracted by the fake accents.

As with Paris Je t'aime, some of the stories shine brighter than others. Natalie Portman directs a sweet piece about a relationship between a father and daughter; Olivia Thirlby and Anton Yelchin are refreshing as a younger pair who makes the prom a night to remember. The lighter films are breaths of fresh air amongst others that are trying too hard to be hip and stylized.

The ensemble cast certainly gives the movie a boost; even when it's not provoking the deepest of emotions, the film always had my attention. There are solid performances all-around, particularly from Chloris Leachman and Eli Wallach as an aging couple who are still bickering when they aren't helping each other cross the street. It is the most hopeful of the scenarios, and by far the sweetest and most touching.

The film provides plenty of the standard money shots of Manhattan: a typical day in Grand Central Station in fast forward, subway rides, hours of people watching in a coffee shop. The encounters feel authentic and realistic, but the failure lies in the inability to make us feel something on a deeper level. Sometimes you can relate to the characters, and sometimes you feel sorry for them, but it doesn't squeeze your heart nearly enough - and with a title like New York, I Love You, this a disappointment.

You Asked: I Love Him, Now What?

Dear Sugar,

My boyfriend and I are both 20 years old and have been in our relationship for six months. We are both shy. I love him and I want to tell him, but I'm not sure he feels the same way. I don't want to scare him off and I don't want to force him into saying it only because I said it first. I thought he was going to say it the other night because he said he had something to tell me; however, he was partying at the time and he left the conversation saying we would talk when he was in a better state. We did see each other after that evening, but he has not mentioned anything to me.

Now I don't know what to think. I'm afraid to bring up the conversation because I'm not sure if he remembered what he was going to say. I love him and I want him to know. Any advice?

- In Love Leah

To see DearSugar's answer, read more.

Dear In Love Leah,

If your instincts are telling you that your boyfriend wants to say that he loves you, you're probably right. He might be waiting for the right moment, but that's neither here nor there. If you love him, and want him to know it, then tell him! Saying I love you for the first time is always scary because you can never be 100 percent sure of the other person's reaction - your boyfriend is probably dealing with the same issues right now. But as long as you feel confident with what you feel, then there's nothing to be worried about regardless of his response.

As far as him saying it without meaning it or feeling rushed, go ahead and let him know that you're not expecting anything in return, and that you simply want him to know how you feel. It's more than likely he shares your sentiments, but if you take off the pressure, he'll know that he can wait until he's truly ready to say it before jumping the gun. This is a great opportunity to set the tone for the communication you want to have throughout your relationship. Be open, understanding, and honest and the rest will fall into place.

You Asked: He Can't Say That He Loves Me!

Dear Sugar,

I'm 22 years old and my boyfriend is 33. We have been friends for about a year and have been dating for seven months. We get along really well and he makes me laugh all the time. He’s awesome and almost perfect in every way but the other night when I asked him if he loved me, he couldn't say yes. I love him, and am very sure about my feelings for him so I was obviously very upset by this. After I shed a few tears, we talked and he told me that he’s happy with me and really cares about me, but he's just not ready to say "I love you" yet.

Now I feel like I've ruined everything because I feel like there must be something wrong with me if he doesn’t know by now. I feel like we've been together long enough for him to know if he wants to be serious with me or not. I'm constantly stressed about our relationship, wondering if he'll ever love me the way I love him, so what do I do now? Wait and let him tell me when he’s ready, or leave because I don’t want to be waiting around for my heart to be broken? - In Love Lauren

To see DearSugar's answer, read more.

Dear In Love Lauren,

Telling someone you love them means something different to everyone. There are some people that use the term loosely, but if you're like me, you only say it when you really mean it. It sounds as though your boyfriend thinks a lot like me, so while I'm sure this isn't what you want to hear, perhaps he just needs a little more time. Since he told you how happy he is with you and how much he cares for you, I wouldn't assume that your relationship is in trouble, it just sounds like he's a little guarded when it comes to the L-word.

Since you love him, and he cares for you, too, I'd try to separate what happened the other night from your day-to-day relationship and wait for him to be ready - you don't want to pressure him into telling you something he doesn't mean. I understand that you feel embarrassed and let down that he's not there yet, but like I said before, everyone's feelings progress differently. Hang in there Lauren, keep the lines of communication open and when the time is right, saying I love you will be a natural and effortless term of endearment.

Source

You Asked: Does He Actually Love Me?

Dear Sugar,

My boyfriend and I have been going out for almost five months now and a few weeks back I said those three little words . . . and he didn't respond. While I wasn't expecting him to say it back, the actually reality that he didn't hurt me.

We talked about his reaction, or lack thereof, later, and he says that he feels the same way but is not comfortable saying it yet; he needs more time. In fact, he and his ex didn't exchange an "I love you" until about a year into the relationship. He feels like his actions should speak clearly, and in many ways they do, but I still can't help but feel insecure. I am not sure I can be with someone who can't tell me they love me. And I worry that maybe he doesn't really love me, but just doesn't want to lose me. How can I be sure he loves me if he won't say it?

- Looking For Love Linnie

Dear Looking For Love Linnie,

Unfortunately there aren't any guarantees in the game of love, and just as you can't be sure if your boyfriend's truthful when he says he has those feelings for you, there is no way to be positive that his feelings were real if he were to say "I love you;" hence, the saying that actions speak louder than words. And of your own admission, your boyfriend's actions make it clear that he cares about you very deeply. I can understand both your fears and your need to have him return the sentiment, but it might be too soon to assume that he won't be able to ever say this to you.

Just let it be for now. You can bring it up again in a while, but try not to let this become something you obsess about. Enjoy your relationship, and give your boyfriend the benefit of the doubt when he says that he needs more time. Perhaps uttering those three words is a very serious commitment to him that he doesn't take lightly, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

You Asked: Why Hasn't He Said I Love You?

Dear Sugar,

Is meeting the parents a big deal? My boyfriend of almost a year recently had his mom visit for two days while she was passing through town. I ended up having dinner with her both nights but he hasn't said I love you yet. He's very close to his mom so should I take that as a good sign? He wouldn't introduce me to his family if he didn't see long-term potential with me, right? If so, why can't he say I love you yet? - Becoming Impatient Brenda

To see DearSugar's answer read more.

Dear Becoming Impatient Brenda,

There is no right time to say I love you - it's different for everyone. The same thing goes for meeting the parents. Some guys introduce all their girlfriends to their family while others are more selective. The fact that your boyfriend had you come to dinner with his mom both nights she was in town makes me think he was excited for you two to meet - a good sign - but I can't say if that means he's thinking long term per se.

If you're concerned with how he feels about you, just ask him. We could sit here and make assumptions about what his actions mean until we're blue in the face, but the only way to get straight answers is by talking to him. You've been together a long time so if you're still in the unsure phase, something's got to change. Open the lines of communication and get the answers you need to feel secure in this relationship. Good luck.

You Asked: Is It Too Soon to Fall in Love?

Dear Sugar,

I've been talking to a guy for a little over two months now. Things have been going great, but I'm away at law school so most of our conversations are limited to text messages and phone calls. We've had one visit since we met and plan on another one in the near future. We really enjoy each other conversationally, and we had amazing chemistry and passion during our visit. We've decided to talk exclusively; however, I have no clue what I'll be doing when I graduate.

Because of this uncertainty, we decided to keep things really casual until I figure out my plans, but two days later, he told me that he thinks he is falling in love with me! Is this possible so soon and with such limited interaction? I feel strongly about him as well but I'm far from ready to say I love you. Are we on two completely different pages here? What should I do? - Weary Wendy

To see DearSugar's answer read more

Dear Weary Wendy,

Since you're still unsure about your feelings for this guy, I think you should just give it more time before making a decision, one way or the other. Use the distance to your advantage and really get to know him. If your feelings grow, you have the option to factor him into your plans after graduation, but if you feel like you're better off as friends, at least you'll know you tried.

It does sound like you are on different pages in the relationship right now, but no, I don't think it's too soon for him to tell you that he's falling in love with you. There is no written rule that dictates when we fall in love; it happens differently for everyone so don't beat yourself up for not feeling the same way. I think you should continue doing what you're doing and let this relationship progress organically. Good luck!

Source

You Asked: Does He Love Me?

Dear Sugar,
I've been dating a guy for four months and things have been going really well. He had no problems committing, treats me like a princess, he's gone out of his way to prove his loyalty to me, and he always incorporates me into his life. I've met his friends, his co-workers, and he recently flew me home to meet his family. He's made plans with me for events months from now and I have every reason to believe he is sincere in his seriousness about me, minus one thing: He hasn't dropped the L Bomb.

While I feel very loved, I need to hear it, not just feel it. It's only been four months, so I don't think it is appropriate to bring it up, but there will come a point where it will be overtly weird for me that he hasn't said it yet. When is that magical point if I haven't hit it already, and how should I bring it up without freaking him out? - I Love Him Lydia

To see DearSugar's answer read more.

Dear I Love Him Lydia,

Since it's only been four months and you say you feel very loved, I'm confused as to why you're putting so much pressure on the L word. Keep in mind that saying I love you means something different for everyone - some people throw around the term while others keep the saying incredibly sacred - and since he's giving you every reason to believe that he's very happy in this relationship, it could just be that he's the latter.

You say that you don't feel it's appropriate to bring it up quite yet, so I'd try your hardest to just be in the moment. Enjoy getting treated like a princess for awhile without fast forwarding your relationship. If it gets to the point where you need that verbal affirmation of his feelings towards you, just ask him or tell him you love him first! Obviously scaring him is an option, but if he's not willing to talk about his feelings with you, he might not be all that great of a guy after all. I hope it all works out in the end - good luck!
