Optimistic Missoni . . . and Missoni for H&M?

M Missoni, Missoni's contemporary brand, has some news for us. In good news, it's anticipating 25 percent annual growth. Who said optimism was dead? It's adding accessories to its mix this Summer and a new denim collection for Spring 2010. The company also plans to open M Missoni stores worldwide. In the meantime, we can feast on the brand's Fall line of signature knits, '80s silhouettes, and colorful flavors. In other great news, Angela Missoni told the Telegraph "[I] would like to do something with H&M because I think it is a very powerful way to reach younger girls now.” Agreed! Could it be? Source

That's why they've come up with a new department, dubbed WEAR, specifically catering to the stylish working woman. It's filled with hip, everyday clothes boasting a load of popular contemporary brands such as Elie Tahari, Tory Burch, M Missoni, and DKNY, to name a few.

“There has been an underserved market of style-conscious working women, maturing contemporary customers, and women who pay attention to fashion and want to integrate it into their lives in a sophisticated way,” said Joseph Boitano of Saks. Trend Alert: Bell Sleeves

If romance were a sleeve it would be a bell sleeve. Katie Holmes' floral Missoni tunic may be lovely, but what really conjures up the smell of roses is her slouchy bell sleeve cardi. Traffic school classes aren't going to stop Nicole Richie from busting out all her cutest outfits. This time around she opted for a loose-fitting M Missoni dress and gold gladiator sandals. On her arm is a gorgeous black Chanel bag (as of late, she's been ditching Balenciaga for Chanel, but I'm sure she'll be back to her signature in no time). Considering it's scorching in LA and she's attending traffic school, it's perfection.

Minus the gaudy gold "M" pendant, this M Missoni Wool Knit Bag ($695) is exquisite. It's a good investment for those who covet the famous Missoni pattern but not the price tag.

Though it's still rather expensive, there are several perks to this purse. Firstly, the shape is just right; not too big, not too small. I also love the ruched leather handles and the shoulder strap. The black and grey pattern is unique, and very Missoni. Most importantly, I can see this bag matching almost anything...and when spending a paycheck or two on a purse, that's something to consider.

I'm sure you haven't been holding your breath for this release, but if the business side of beauty has always been as intriguing to you as it has to me, I think you'll find the statistics of the top 100 beauty company earners of 2008 quite interesting. The glosses, fragrances and pick-me-up eye shadows that we buy to make ourselves look and feel better add up to some serious poundage and have made brands a full fledged fortune. In '08 alone, the cosmetics industry have scrounged together a whopping $168.21 Billion (that's roughly £105 Billion).

The U.S. ranks the highest with 33 companies on the list, followed by France with 13, Japan with 11, Italy with 10, Germany with eight, and seven in the UK. Other countries include South Korea, Switzerland, Brazil, Russia, Belgium, China, Finland, Latvia, Peru, Spain and Sweden. The sales calculated are from fragrance, skincare, sun care products, makeup, haircare, deodorant, anti-cellulite and shaving products only.

Believe it or not, but The Estee Lauder Companies took a hit this year. However, they still managed to conjure up in $7.85 Billion in sales. You're all familiar with some of their brands like: Estée Lauder, Jo Malone, Aramis, Clinique, Prescriptives, Lab Series, Origins, MAC Cosmetics, Bobbi Brown, Tommy Hilfiger, Kiton, La Mer, Donna Karan, Aveda, Bumble and bumble, Darphin, Michael Kors, Sean John, Missoni, Tom Ford Beauty, Mustang, Coach, Ojon and Good Skin.
Avon Products earned over $7.6 Billion in 2008 as an umbrella company for their brands: Avon Color, Anew, Skin-So-Soft, Advanced Techniques Hair Care, Avon Naturals, Avon Wellness, Mark, Derek Jeter, Patrick Dempsey, Emanuel Ungaro, Christian Lacroix and Marimekko.

Fab Ad: Missoni, Fall '09

For Fall '09, Missoni enlisted the help of Ryan McGinley - the same photog who shot Stella's playful ad - to create an amazing, windblown masterpiece. The campaign features Hanne Gaby Odiele and her luxurious locks, in Missoni's signature knits. Peep the eye-catching, colorful juxtaposition between the soft knits and black truck. Don't her striped blue cardi and oatmeal leggings look cozy enough to sleep in? I don't know if I'd dare do such a thing, but I'm just sayin'. Thoughts?

Matthew Williamson For H&M Burns Through Foggy San Fran

Breathe in, breathe out. This was me last night when trying to fall asleep. You know when you're so excited for something insomnia ensues and obsession overpowers? You all know I've been anticipating Matthew Williamson's H&M collection since the news broke, but I didn't expect to turn groupie . . .
Rise and shine, join the line at the Powell Street H&M. The line was only about eight stylistas deep at this point. PartySugar, also a MW groupie, joined me around 7:30 a.m. - store opens at 10. But something had been brewing behind Fab's scenes, I just didn't want to jinx anything. And then, the fashion gods looked down upon me, and I got the email - I was granted early press access. Not to shop mind you, but to enter the store (this was about 9ish), survey the scene, try things on, take pics, and revel in MWHM. I already had my wish list, as did Party, so you can imagine our elation.

The West Coast district manager, Alexis, dished on how she thought this was the most commercially viable designer collection. Agreed. She was gaga over the leather jacket and the hot pink gold-studded belt. Interestingly, this SF store gets more stock of the designer goods than LA's Beverly Center store; who said SF didn't love to shop? We also chatted about Phase II - the Summer collection, hitting stores May 14. Alexis promised hot bikinis and a fresh geometric print overnight bag (stay tuned for pics!). I had to ask if Missoni for H&M is up next and she replied "no comment" which leads me to think it's true since the news broke just yesterday and she knew what I was talking about, sneaky Fab.

We were able to hang tight inside the store, out of the fog, but still not shop, until doors opened at 10 a.m. But our plans of attack were in place. And like that - mayhem. This was my first time really tolerating this. I missed the first collection, Karl Lagerfeld, slept through Stella McCartney, slacked on Viktor & Rolf, cried post Roberto Cavalli, and gave up on Commes de Garcons. But not Matthew. This was my H&M collection. And so, I raced though the racks plucking my new babies, calm as a clam.

The dramatic ruffled print maxi dress was the first to go. And in person, this one was amazing; the black sequined detailing was divine. The short version of this was a hot one, too. And as celebrities still work their PR magic, the sequined artsy dress worn by Ginnifer Goodwin and the peacock dress modeled by both Nicky Hilton and Katy Perry were gone in no time. None of these screamed Fab. I added the glam rockin' blue blazer, the yellow embroidered top, the pink feathered cardigan, the butterfly tee, and the hot pink studded belt to my arsenal.

Look Book Love: Corey Lynn Calter, Spring '09

I'm always amazed at how the perfect styling job can transform simple pieces into treasures. Corey Lynn Calter's Spring look book has that kind of powerful styling. A floral mini skirt, for example, is cute, but when paired with a green dotted tank top and metallic gold Oxfords, it instantly comes to life. It's the finishing touches - the hats, jewels, footwear, layering - and nature scenes that make me want to stare at Corey Lynn Calter's look book all day long. They've taken a pretty model (doesn't she kind of look like Margherita Missoni?), put her in fun clothes, nerd glasses, funky hats, and the result is nothing short of a sweetheart.
