Beyonce won't be showing off her, um, leotards anytime soon in Malaysia. The singer has canceled her upcoming show in the predominately Muslim country because it has upset conservative Muslims who think her show is immoral.
Although Beyonce is not subject to the country's Sharia courts and cannot be tried for moral offenses, her sexy dances and costumes would nevertheless cause some outrage.

Not every woman around the world can enjoy the simple pleasures of life, like sipping a cold beer on vacation, without fear of physical punishment. Recently, 32-year-old Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno was sentenced to be caned for drinking a beer in a hotel nightclub.
After being taken into custody and transported to a prison for her punishment today, Kartika was prepared to endure the caning.

At a meeting to discuss social threats to Muslims in Malaysia, a fatwa — scholarly opinion on Islamic law — was issued that forbids women to act like men. According to the ruling, women should not cut their hair short nor walk, talk, or otherwise act like men.
The fatwa, however, is not legally binding so it's not illegal to act masculine, just immoral.

We may scoff at how much some families pay for their kids' text message bills or the cloudy texting etiquette, or lack there of, which has infiltrated our culture, but at least we have the right to text whatever we want. Apparently, Malaysia's Deputy Minister for Energy, Water and Communications recently announced that mobile phone users caught sending obscene messages and pictures could face prosecution with fines of $15,000 and up to one year in jail.
According to Computerworld Malaysia the issue came up in response to a question in parliament in May, and sadly not a saucy dirty-text message scandal involving the Deputy Minister.

Imagine a city with city-wide broadband, advanced security, "smart" parking lots, and "apps-on-tap" for businesses. A city where nightly laser light shows light up the sky and project images on buildings. That dream, will soon become a reality in Malaysia, where the government is building i-City, a 72-acre urban township that features a 1,000ft pedestrian street mall (called "CityWalk"), houses, shop offices, corporate offices, a retail mall, serviced residences, a hotel, an innovation center and an "intelligent school."

While gay Americans fight for marriage rights, gay people in India are just winning the right to be homosexual. Today the high court in New Delhi overruled colonial-era legislation that criminalized homosexuality. Britain decriminalized homosexual acts in 1967, but its former colonies, including Malaysia, Singapore, and Zimbabwe still have strict laws against homosexual relations.

In the nonstop stream of bad economy news, there's at least one bright sign for retailers: People are still buying beauty items. A study by research group Synovate found 41 percent of people plan to spend the same amount on cosmetics as they did before the recession hit; 27 percent said they would reduce spending. The study, which queried 11,500 people, spanned more than a dozen countries — and that's where it gets interesting.
