Cinco de Mayo is manana and I plan on celebrating by whipping up a batch of margaritas for my girlfriends. Summer has arrived and with it my desire for all things blended and tropical. Margaritas, daiquiris, piña coladas... you name it and I'll make them at one of my parties this summer. The only catch is I don't have any fabulous glasses to serve these cool cocktails in. I already have red and white wine glasses, champagne flutes and saucers, water goblets, and martini glasses, but my collection lacks one for those summer cocktails. Your Political Leanings May Determine What's on Your Plate

Everyone says that you are what you eat. But could your political party affiliation be the driver of what goes on your plate, too? That's what food trend analyst Phil Lempert (of koodie fame) is arguing. Examining 2009 data from Hunch, he found conservatives opt for "mainstream, comfort food staples," while liberals are likely to gravitate toward "international and exotic cuisines."

According to Lempert, conservatives correlated with foods like pizza, macaroni and cheese, and peanut butter and jelly for lunch, plus fried chicken, meatloaf, and steak for dinner, with Italian food being the cuisine of choice.

Liberals, on the other hand, preferred Asian: Thai and Indian for lunch, and veggie burgers and green curry for supper. His findings indicate they also tend to make more nutritionally sound choices, such as eating vegetables more often and fast food less frequently, and making dishes from scratch.

Those looking to toe the bipartisan line should stick to mutually-loved foods such as hot dogs, bacon double cheeseburgers, ice cream sans sprinkles, romaine lettuce, and salt on a margarita glass. Do these findings line up correctly with your political leanings?

The Big Chill

I don't know whether it's the sweltering heat or being cooped up inside on a sunny day, but when it's Summer, it seems all I want to do is kick back and relax in the sun, frosty cocktail in hand. My solution? Plotting out the margarita I'm going to make when it's five o'clock and I'm shopping for festive glassware that could be used to serve my beverage. Check out my finds below: My favorite is this oversized margarita goblet, which is large enough for you and your three BFFs. What'll you be toasting with? Bottoms up!

Come Party With Me: Cinco de Mayo - The Look

Use vibrant colors to decorate the location of your Cinco de Mayo fiesta. Instead of traditional tablecloths, cover the table with festive Mexican blankets. Yellow servingware is perfect for plating the enchiladas. Fill bowls with chips and dip.

So guests can see the floating blackberries, pour the cocktail into a clear pitcher. Arrange glasses nearby. Make the ice cream sundaes in margarita glasses. Don't forget to light candles and fill a vase with fresh flowers.

I don't know about you, but being this close to Cinco de Mayo makes me crave margaritas! Simply made, a margarita is tequila, orange liquor, and lime juice. However, this recipe for the ultimate margarita takes the concoction to a whole new level. Limeade concentrate and beer are the secret ingredients that make it exceptionally refreshing. While I prefer my margaritas on the rocks, this recipe is also nice blended.

To rim the glass with salt, rub a lime wedge around the rim of the glass. Dip it in a bowl of coarse salt, turning the glass in a circular motion. Carefully fill with ice and the margarita.

Ultimate Margarita
Modified from Epicurious and Ozols Business Group

Ingredients

1.5 cups tequila
1/2 cup Grand Marnier
1/3 bottle beer (light beer: Budweiser, Coors, Miller)
1 can frozen lemonade concentrate
juice from 1 lemon
juice from 1 lime
sugar to taste
ice
salt, if preferred to rim glass

Directions

In a blender combine all ingredients, blend until smooth. Alternately, combine all ingredients except ice in a pitcher and pour into an ice filled glass.

Makes 12.

Happy Hour: Salty Dog

On New Years, I discovered a new favorite cocktail called the salty dog. No, it's not a strange concoction with hot dogs, but the cousin to the classic greyhound! Both the greyhound and salty dog combine fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice with vodka. However, the salty dog is served in a salt-rimmed glass similar to a margarita. With citrus in season, I rolled up my sleeves and pulled out my old-fashioned glass juicer. Although manual juicing is time consuming, the refreshingly rewarding, tangy drink is worth it.

Salty Dog
Adapted from Epicurious

Ingredients

3 ounces vodka or gin
6 ounces grapefruit juice, fresh squeezed preferable
Salt to rim the glass
lemon wedges

Directions

Rub the lemon along the rim of the glass, then salt rim.
Combine vodka and grapefruit in a shaker with ice. Shake until cold. Pour grapefruit and vodka mixture in the glass. Can be served on the rocks or up. Enjoy.
