Shoe Review: Bern High Boot by Keen

The more active you are throughout your workday, the better. When folks wear comfy shoes to work, they walk more; let's face it, speed-walking for 30 minutes at lunch in stilettos is not a good time. That's why I'm on the hunt for stylish, yet comfortable shoes that promote getting up and moving around. With its low heel made of resilient rubber, I'm liking the Bern High Boot by Keen ($150). Since the familiar Mark Twain quote "The coldest Winter I ever spent was a Summer in San Francisco" is completely accurate, I had more than a few days this Summer to test out these boots. Not only are they comfortable and cozy, but Fab approved of them with only one criticism. She liked the buckles, a trend for Fall, and the whip stitching details. But she didn't like the extra rubber bump at the toe, which is unfortunately Keen's trademark. Made of leather and lined with faux shearling, these boots accommodate muscular calves, which can make finding tall boots difficult. The dark rubber sole cushions the feet nicely without leaving black marks everywhere. I walked all about when I wore the boots with no aches, pains, or blisters. Home Away From Home: The Langham in London Reopens

One of the largest, oldest, and best-known "grand hotels" in London, The Langham, reopened yesterday after a $130 million refurbishment. Mayor of London Boris Johnson and the hotel's managing director Katie Benson officially reopened the hotel yesterday with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting. The historic hotel was built in 1865, and over the years, has been frequented by the likes of Mark Twain, Napoleon III, and Oscar Wilde, and even became the set of several of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. You'll find it in London's West End neighborhood, steps away from some of the city's best shopping on Regent Street, Bond Street, and Oxford Street, as well as Regent's Park.

London-based architect David Collins was pegged to redesign the hotel's Landau restaurant, its private dining room, Postillion, and Artesian, its glamorous cocktail bar. The resulting designs are chic and romantic, with a rich sense of heritage as well as a fresh, avant-garde quality. Meanwhile, Richmond International created five new design schemes for the guest rooms and suites, as well as redesigned the renowned Palm Court, which has been serving afternoon tea since the hotel was founded. Richmond chimed in on the hotel's heavy sense of "Englishness," but used contemporary finishes and other decorative details to give it character. For instance, you'll see traditional artistry methods like glass-blowing and metalwork used to create modern light fixtures and hardware.

Mullet Mania!

Ahh, the mullet. Also known as hockey hair, ten ninety, ape drape and business in the front/party in the back - the mullet has some murky origins. Some claim that it was invented in the nineteenth century by fishermen who needed to keep their necks warm when out fishing for, well, mullets. Others believe both Mark Twain and Marcel Proust reference the bilevel monstrosity. Whatever the origin, we're stuck with it now, and in my book, the only person who ever looked good with a mullet was David Bowie. The worst, though? What Wikipedia tells us was once a big trend: "The hairstyle achieved further popularity in the late 1970s and 1980s among entertainers with receding hairlines . . ." Ack!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, what an exciting time for you! I can't say enough amazing things about San Francisco -- you chose a great city for your honeymoon! One thing I should tell you is beware of the weather! Mark Twain said it best, "The coldest winter was the summer I spent in San Francisco" so be sure to pack accordingly.

The best thing about San Francisco is you are just an hour away from the Napa Valley which is where I highly recommend you stay, at least for a few nights. The weather, the wine, and the views makes Napa great honeymoon destination. Meadowood Resort has everything from croquet to pool side massage, not to mention your choice of fine dining just minutes away. If you want to splurge for a night or two, I suggest staying at Auberge Du Soleil or The Carneros Inn. If you decide to lodge in the city for your entire trip, I highly recommend taking at least a day trip up north, I promise you won't regret it!!

San Francisco has a plethora of hotels for you to choose from. If you are looking to stay in Union Square, I recommend the Westin St. Francis which has an amazing restaurant and spa, plus it's right next to all the great shops! If you want to stay off the beaten path a little, one of my favorite boutique hotels is The Hotel Drisco in Pacific Heights, a gorgeous neighborhood chalk filled with beautiful homes, rolling hills, and Golden Gate Bridge views. Hotel Vitale on the Embarcadero is another favorite of mine. This hotel give you a view of the East Bay and is also walking distance from wonderful restaurants.
