Fab's 10 Fall Essentials: Black Maxi Skirt

Confession: I've already gotten one. I was inspired by Jenni Kayne's Spring '09 collection. I love the long, lean silhouette and nonchalant feel. Think Rick Owens.

Today is the first official day of Fall, and for the next couple weeks we are going to count down our 10 Fall Essentials. So often friends and fams ask us what's new and exciting for the season. We realize fashion can be overwhelming, and we're happy to dwindle it down to 10 fantastic new additions that we're personally coveting and you should too.

I've already worn this skirt with a sexy nude tank top and layered jewelry; I also wore a cardi to add to the mellow vibe. I'm also thinking it would be cute with moccasin boots, chunky knit sweaters, and a cropped leather jacket. The possibilities are endless for this James Perse Maxi Skirt ($175).

Jenni Kayne has long been a Fab favorite. The LA-based designer never fails to inspire us with her polished, cool-girl aesthetic. When maxi skirts were making a chic comeback, Jenni did it so right, and even inspired me to get one. We have been following Jenni for quite some time now, and even got to chat with her recently at New York Fashion Week. We were thrilled when she became a mom, opened an LA store, then took her business online. Among her early celeb adopters have been Jared Leto, Rachel Zoe, the Olsens, Kristen Bell, and Rachel Bilson, to name a few. Step inside to get a fashion flashback of Jenni Kayne's universe.

Trend Alert: Maxi Skirts

Maxi skirts are big news this Spring as hemlines have officially dropped. The floor sweeping style is the ultimate in understated cool and reminds me of early '90s Summer days.

The style has already started to creep in to shops in a variation of prints and colours. ASOS have a great selection including this motel floral print version (£28) which would look great with a plain tee.

I also like Topshop's silk style (£50) which has a more luxurious feel. Will you be wearing a maxi skirt this Spring?

2010 Fall NYFW Trend: Maxed-Out

For Fall '10, designers - such as Adam Lippes, Peter Som, Michael Kors, and Tommy Hilfiger - swapped out shorter hemlines for longer luxurious lengths. Maxed-out skirts are a sophisticated and refreshing alternative to the tights and minis combo and can be worn both casually or ultra-glamorous. Peep how Adam Lippes and Peter Som experimented with floaty, printed chiffon layers, while Michael Kors and Tibi decorated their long skirts with beads and shimmer. We love them all.

On Our Radar: Miss Selfridge Launch Gossip Girl Collection

You can't deny that Gossip Girl has influenced our style over the past few years. Whether you were inspired to buy a Blair Waldorf style alice band or a Jenny Humphrey style mini skirt, you can't avoid the distinct look of the show. Miss Selfridge are tapping in to this influence by launching the first official Gossip Girl collection! The High Street shop has just announced plans to collaborate with the TV series. Creative director Yasmin Yusuf commented, “We are delighted to be working with the Warner Bros. TV series, Gossip Girl. The dresses we’ve created based on the characters fit perfectly with our spring, summer 2010 range. Our customers love the show and the styles of the girls so the partnership is a perfect match.”

The series returns to our screens in March for the final part of the third series. Expect the collection to include pieces like a leopard print maxi dress (very Serena), a ruffle front shift dress with a floral skirt (very Blair) or a black body con bandage dress or a nude and black lace tutu-style dress (so Jenny!). All you have to do now is decide which girl you want to channel. Are you excited for this line?

2010 Fall New York Roundup!

New York Fall '10 Fashion Week is in full throttle - here's a roundup to keep you looped in. Trends are already surfacing; creative layering, maxi skirts, and patchwork are some of the ones I'm anticipating. Naomi Campbell hosted the most emotional show, thus far - a Haiti Fashion Relief effort that also served as an ode to Alexander McQueen. Though Agyness Deyn fell in her Burberrys, top models and Daphne Guinness (veiled, far left) wore the late designer for a rockin' remembrance.

There is an early '90s revival on the horizon and it's beginning to emerge this Spring. Clogs, denim shirts, and maxi skirts are already all over the High Street and now another item is set to be revived – dungarees. They're a natural development from jumpsuits which have been popular for the past few seasons. Dungarees appeared on the catwalk at Ralph Lauren, Jean Paul Gaultier and Peter Jensen to name a few. Look what I found . . . an all-black bike to match my all-black outfit! Destiny. Though I couldn't ride a bike in my black jersey maxi skirt - that's just a broken something waiting to happen - I love how it swishes when I walk. I could not live without my throw-on cashmere hoodie; it's cute with just about everything. My turquoise and silver chain belt pulls it all together for a laid-black look.
