Doing Drugstore: Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush

After 27 hours of travel to get home for the holidays (yeah, really!), I arrived home looking a bit haggard. As I slabbed on the concealer and swept on the powder blush in attempt to hide my jet-lagged appearance, I couldn't help but wish I had some cream blush instead. The powdered blush just seemed a little flat and settled into my parched skin in the most unflattering way.

So, I made a pit stop at the only place that was open: the drugstore. I'd heard some decent things about Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush ($6.89) on the blush pages of our Product Reviews website, so I picked up two: one for my mom and one for me.

The Dream Mousse comes in six shades ranging from a bronzy brown to a bright pink. I tried Peach Satin, a slightly shimmery peaches 'n' cream glow, and my mom tried Soft Plum, a natural rose.

The verdict? We both agreed that a little goes a long way, making this light-as-air blush a great bang for your buck. We also liked how easy it was to blend and that it didn't get cakey or emphasize any rough patches or wrinkles. As for my mom, she was pleased as punch (her expression) that this creamy blush took the paleness out, leaving her with a natural radiance. As for me? I wish the color lasted just a bit longer, but all in all, mom's always right. This affordable whipped blush is a keeper.

Whip It Good: Marvelous Mousse Foundations

While Maybelline's Dream Liquid Mousse Foundation ($9.50) didn't make our top seven list of drugstore foundations, I'm sure it's well on its way. This newer product has a whipped formula perfect for creating airbrushed quality coverage. Reader Mydiadem calls it an excellent foundation. Here's what else she had to say:

I was looking for a new foundation when I forgot mine on a weekend trip. The commercials for the Liquid Mousse were interesting, especially since they claim to give you poreless skin (and I have big ol' pores). I thought I'd give this a try and I'm glad I did. It is so light and airy you don't feel it on your skin at all. It is very hydrating and the coverage is very good. While my skin doesn't look completely "airbrushed," it looks better than with my Clinique or Lorac foundation at home. My verdict: best drugstore foundation I've tried and better than a lot of department store brands.

Make Your Halloween Makeup Stay The Night

With the wrong Halloween makeup, your cheerleader costume can become a zombie cheerleader costume by the end of the night. Makeup that stays put is imperative in pulling off the ultimate costume. Here are some tips to help your getup last the night.

Makeup stays longer on hydrated skin. Be sure not to slack on your moisturizer and eye cream.
Use professional stage makeup. "Usually over-the-counter makeup lines are called washable cream makeup, and they will smear and rub off," says Dominic Cruz, Education Director at Kryolan. If you don't have access to cake makeup, he recommends setting your look with powder or Kryolan Fixing Spray.
Choose a long-wearing or waterproof concealer, like Maybelline Cover Stick Waterproof Concealer.
Use an eye shadow base or primer, like L‘Oreal De-Crease Eyeshadow base.
Curl lashes, and use a waterproof mascara if your costume includes it. If you need to wear false lashes, bring extras and glue with you. If you need to wear colored mascara and can’t find one, try Benefit She Laq, which comes with a mascara wand applicator.
If your disguise requires flushed cheeks, layer more than one kind of blush (mousse, powder, gel, stain) to make the color last longer.
Use long-wearing eye pencil on brows instead of brow pencil. Also use it for fake moles or freckles (that means you, Marilyn).
If you need to create the illusion of big lips, use concealer all over your lips before applying either liner or lip stain and then lipstick. If you need to tweak the shape, use a reverse lip liner.

Behind The Scenes at the 2009 Cosmopolitan Beauty Awards

On Tuesday morning, at the Kensington Roof Gardens in London, Cosmopolitan UK threw the 7th annual beauty awards bash of the year! Besides the flowing array of nibbles, coffee and tea, 82 products (and their trophy's) were showcased around the room for editors, PR's and guests to admire and test. Justine Southall (pictured on the far right), Cosmo's Publishing Director spoke about the state of affairs at the magazine whilst Ingborg Van Lotringen, Cosmo's Beauty Director presented the two newest awards for Breakthrough Product to Clairol Perfect 10 and the Classic Award to The Body Shop Body Butters.

This year’s panel of judges included Alesha Dixon, Rachel Stevens, facialist Anastasia Achilleos, makeup artists Caroline Barnes and Lee Pycroft, hairstylist Errol Douglas, Cosmo Editor Louise Court and Cosmo Beauty Director (pictured in the grey dress) and Ingeborg van Lotringen (kneeling). There were a total of 13 categories ranging from hair styling and treatments, to skincare, makeup and suncare and, 16 products were granted the 'Readers' Kiss Of Approval' award by those who voted via the magazine or online.

Five Easy Ways to Fake a Sun-Kissed Glow

If you make frequent stops on the Bella train, then you'll know that I'm all about safe sunning - which means no tanning at all. But that doesn't mean you have to lose the look of a day at the beach. While I love the benefits of a self-tanner, sometimes I don't want to deal with the smell of DHA combining with my skin's chemistry or the affliction of streak-mania all over my body. So, I've come up with a few tricks to fake a tan, all without the sunburn or chemical reaction. Check them out when you read more.

Insta-perk: For an instant perk-me-up, a creamy bronzer gives the best fresh-faced glow. These days, I've been very into Maybelline Dream Mousse Bronzer in Sun Glow ($6), a slightly shimmering warm rosy brown. Just apply where the sun would hit by making an "E" shape along the hairline, into the cheeks, and over the jawline. A small amount on the brow bones and down the nose complete the luminous effect.
Orange you looking tan: All I am saying is give orange a chance - or at least peach. I'm digging Revolution Organics Beauty Balm in Sunkissed ($32), an eco-friendly peachy-toned stick that gives lips, cheeks, and eyes a natural, dewy glow.
Triple the fun: Another multitasker but in a different way. To fake a suntan, go with a blush/bronzer/eye shadow combo that has at least three tones: a light tan, rosy pink, and warm brown. Swirl all of the colors together and apply to the in an "E" motion. Next, apply the lightest shade as a base on your lids, up to the brow bone. Use the rosy shade on the lids and seamlessly blend the darkest shade on the crease. This creates a natural, kissed-by-the-sun look. Try Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips in Malibu Strip Pink Sand Bronzer ($8) or Aveda Face Accents in Bronze Glow ($20).
Hot pink gloss: Mimic the look of sunned lips with a bright raspberry-toned gloss, such as MAC Tricolor Lip Glass in Tasty ($17.50).
Make a mix: Blend a bronze accent cream with your favorite lotion for an easy wash-away tan. I also like to lightly dunk these type of bronzers on their own on the tips of a complexion brush, stippling onto the "E" zone. Try Bonne Bell Gel Bronze Sheer Translucent Color in Golden Tan ($4) or Aveda Shimmer Accents in Terrastone ($21.50). You'll be a bronzed babe in a flash.

"My favourite beauty trends are those that we can emulate with little effort or practice. Earlier this year, as I sat wide-eyed in the rows of London Fashion Week watching the Autumn/Winter shows, I was thrilled to notice a natural dewy skin trend. Fake tans and heavy foundation was gone, and beautiful glowing skin (the kind we all wish we were blessed with) was in. This look appeared on the catwalks of Roberto Cavalli, Aquascutum, Chloe, and Burberry - to name just a few.

If you currently mask less-than-perfect skin with foundation, it’s easy to feel daunted by this trend, but do not despair. The models on the Autumn/Winter catwalk were not going makeup free by any means - they just looked like they were. Follow my simple tips and you will easily boast a fabulous dewy complexion. Before you start, give your skin a head start with an indulgent radiance-boosting facial. My personal favourite is Crème de la Mer Radiant Facial (£95) available at Urban Retreat locations.
After cleansing and moisturising, prep your skin with a radiance balm. My favourite is Clarins Beauty Flash Balm (£25).
If you want to use a foundation, keep it super light. A whipped mousse texture would be perfect. Try Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse (£6.99).
Alternatively, simply dust a sheer powder over your skin for a glowing finish. MAC Mineralize Skin Finish (£16.50) will give your skin a luxurious polish.
Next dot concealer over dark circles and blemishes. Choose a creamy texture, which will smooth onto the skin rather than flake, and match the colour closely to your skin tone. Try Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit (£21).
Finish the look by brushing a touch of blusher over your forehead, cheeks, and nose. Bourjois Compact Powder in Beige Rose (£7.95) will give your complexion a flushed but natural look."

Beauty Girl Crush: Agyness Deyn

I have to admit, when Agyness Deyn first rocked up onto the scene I didn't really see what all the fuss was about. So she's a former chip shop girl made Jean Paul Gaultier muse and model. So she's best mates with Henry Holland and she looks a little like a younger Debbie Harry - so what. (Jealous, moi?) But after seeing her up close I was taken aback by the almost perfect translucent quality of her skin and her strong features, not to mention her down-to-earthiness. Now I understand the comparisons to Kate Moss.
Here Agyness looks naturally cool and beautiful at a Henry Holland and Wrigley's party. She may be a model, but compared to the many identikit faces on the runway, Aggie stands out with her short, spiky hair and bushy brows.

HAIR: Agyness keeps her mop messy by using an old-fashioned volumising mousse - try Volume Lift Mousse by L'Oreal (£9.25) Work it through damp hair before rough blow-drying to give thickness and texture.
BROWS: Keep brows bold and strong by not over-plucking. For a simple and cheap way for naturally groomed brows, add a little vaseline to a cotton bud and smooth onto flyaways. Don't overdo it though - no one likes a chip shop look!
EYES: I love how Aggie keeps her eyes looking natural. Just sweep on a dash of black mascara like Maybelline Define-as-lash.
CHEEKS Agyess's flush always looks pretty and natural, to balance her otherwise edgy look. Dab a little Pot Rouge (£16), from Bobbi Brown onto the apples of your cheeks and blend with fingertips. The raspberry shade will work well on most skin colours and is ultra-cool right now.
LIPS: Rasberry lip gloss looks sweetly chic, apply a sheer lipstick with a brush for extra precision. Try the fantastic Clarins Joli Rouge in Soft Berry, (£14.50). Then add lip gloss for a sexy summer pout.

How-To: Madonna's Wide-Eyed, Winged Makeup

At last night's premiere of her husband's new film, RocknRolla, I was mesmerized by Madonna's wide-eyed, winged eye makeup. It's not an everyday look, but it really amped up M's style. To learn how to do the multitalented songstress's makeup, check out my instructions below:

FACE Start off with a foundation with semimatte coverage (such as Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation [$9.49]). To add instant radiance, use a highlighter to accentuate the under-eye area, forehead, and nose with Benefit's High Beam ($24).
CHEEKS Next, add a peachy accent with Urban Decay's Afterglow Blush in Score ($17) to the apples of the cheeks and around the hairline. Add a slight dusting over your jawline and chin to blend.

EYES Create a light pinky peach shimmer on your lids by applying Stila's Eye Shadow Pan in Starlight ($18). Next, swipe a bronze shade in the outer crease for depth - Stila's Eye Shadow Pan in Twig ($18) will provide a shimmering earthen brown. For the dramatic winged liner, I like Clinique's Quickliner for Eyes in Really Black ($14.50), as it's easy to control and blend. Start from the top lashline moving from inner corner to outer corner, extending straight out beyond the outer corner. Go back over the the outer lashline again to make a heavier line, using the picture above for reference. Apply the same method for the lower lashline, eliminating the retracing step. Lightly blend any uneven edges and set with a black eyeshadow such as Smashbox's Single Eye Shadow in Blackout $16. LIPS For a dramatic high shine, try a coral gloss like Vincent Longo's Perfect Shine Lip Gloss in Fioresh ($22).
