Hello Nurse! Is Our Table Ready?

In marketing terms, a trend can't be declared until there is at least three of the same thing. Well, third times a charm and I am officially declaring waitresses dressed as "hot nurses" a trend. Back in December I told you about the Heart Attack Grill in Arizona - and now I can tell you about two new places in Asia.

First there's the hospital-themed restaurant-bar in Tapei, D.S. Music Restaurant, where customers can sit around a hospital bed and order "medicine" from a menu and have it drip into their glasses from a vat suspended from the ceiling.

Second is a bar in Shenzhen (south China) where the bartenders are dressed as nurses and serve wine and drinks from syringes and test tubes.

Those two places, combined with the Heart Attack Grill, definitely equal a trend. What's next? Barmacy? Oh wait, there used to be one of those in New York, not to mention Damien Hirst's defunct fancy Pharmacy in London. Maybe the medical trend is just coming back?

Can Grapefruit Interfere With Medications?

Orange and grapefruit juices are great sources of potassium and vitamin C, but some of you said you shy away from grapefruit - not because you don't love the taste, but because it interferes with the effectiveness of certain medications. It's true. There are chemical compounds in grapefruit known as furanocoumarins (FCs) that affect the enzymes in the intestines and liver that break down meds.

There's a list of drugs that doctors insist you avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking, because it can cause dangerously high levels of the drug in the blood, which can lead to serious side effects. Pomelos and Seville oranges, a type of bitter orange often used to make marmalade, should also be avoided.

DEA Won't Raid Medical Marijuana Facilities Under Obama

In a stunning move, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that federal drug enforcement officials will no longer raid medical marijuana facilities. This may come as a surprise, since the feds have been cracking down on medical pot since California voted to legalize it in 1996. But Holder says we shouldn't be so shocked; after all, Barack Obama did promise to stop prosecuting medical usage during the campaign.

In fact, Obama used his mother's own experience with breast cancer to inform his opinion. On the trail, Obama said he didn't see any difference between the morphine his mom took and marijuana.

Last week, Holder explained the policy motives behind the move. He said: "The president believes that federal resources should not be used to circumvent state laws." And there you have it. If a state wants to legalize medical marijuana, the federal government will stay out of it!

Created for the Advanced Medical Institute, a Sydney-based provider of treatment programs for fun things like erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation, it shows the police breaking into a couple's bedroom and telling a one-minute man they'll give him a speeding ticket unless he calls AMI for help. Australia's Advertising Standards Bureau has received complaints from people saying that it's offensive to men.

Medical Marijuana Law Limited in California

The California Supreme Court clarified the state's medical marijuana law yesterday, deciding unanimously that individual suppliers can be prosecuted even when dealing to patients with doctor approval. Sellers, who are not caretakers, or fellow medical marijuana cooperative members, will not be protected from the law.

Patients will most likely turn exclusively to marijuana collectives and cooperatives to get their fill. Opponents of the decision say that centralizing the source of the drug makes it much easier for federal agents to raid such dispensaries.

In 1996 California voters passed Proposition 215, which approved marijuana cultivation and use by those with doctor approval. But earlier this year, the state's high court ruled that companies could fire employees who test positive for marijuana, even if they had a doctor's recommendation.

Top 10 Most Medicated States

Where you live affects many elements of your daily life, like how often you walk to your destination as opposed to drive. Based on a new study by Kaiser Family Foundation, which side of the Mason-Dixon line you live on could affect how medicated you are.

According to numbers compiled by the Kaiser Family Foundation the top ten medicated states, based on the number of retail prescriptions filled per capita annually, were in the South. Many states were considerably higher than the national average of 11.1 prescriptions filled annually. Here are the top 10 medicated states.

Public health experts believe the high prescription drug usage is related to obesity rates, which are also higher in the South. Obesity is a risk factor in many chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

Do You Flavor Your Child's Medications?

Does a spoonful of sugar really help the medicine go down? Any parent who has had a sick child on their hands knows how hard it is to force-feed them their medicine. Kenny Kramm, a father and future pharmacist, had this same issue with his children. When his second daughter was born with cerebral palsy and physically couldn't take her medicine due to its bitter taste, Kramm put his chemistry skills to work and created a method for flavoring the antidotes. Today, there are more than 42 flavors available at pharmacies around the world.

Expiration Dates on Medication - Are We Being Duped?

OK...we've all probably done it once in our lives - taken a medication and then later realized is was way past its expiration date. But does it matter? Do medications really expire?

Some researchers don't believe the dates are a true indication as to the drug's effectiveness.

But how can this be? Those dates were put on there for one reason only - to keep us safe, right? Well, think about this - would drug companies be making as much money as they do if their medicines had a shelf life of 10 years?

Since a law was passed in 1979, drug manufacturers are required to stamp an expiration date on their products. This is the date at which the manufacturer can still guarantee the full potency and safety of the drug.

Most medical authorities agree - it IS safe to take drugs past their expiration date - no matter how "expired" they may be. The effectiveness of a drug may decrease over time, but much of the original potency still remains even a decade after the expiration date.

So, is the expiration date a marketing ploy by drug manufacturers to keep you restocking your medicine cabinet and their pockets regularly? You can look at it that way. Or you can also look at it this way: The expiration dates are very conservative to ensure you're getting a drug that's 100% effective.
