For times when the sultry bedhead hairstyle or tousled beach waves aren't what you're going after, why not play up the sexy side of curls with something a bit more mellow? You can still rock a come-hither look, without going the route of the old-timey roller set-style, either. At Milan Fashion Week, Hilary Swank looked stunning with waved hair that avoided being too prim and proper. What I like most about her loose, softly rolled curls is that they're not perfectly pouffed, but they still have that sensuous factor without being too in-your-face sexpot. This is a look I do about once or twice a week when I've got about five extra minutes in the morning, and by nighttime, it's perfectly tousled for cocktail hour. Have you noticed a hot trend emerging on the red carpet? These days, it's all about loose, casually tossed-back updos with pieces left out in the front. Renée Zellweger has been sporting different versions of the look over the past few days, from her tousled bangs she wore at the September Issue premiere to the soft and feminine look she wore earlier this week. At last night's InStyle Summer Soiree in LA, Ashlee Simpson presented her take, complete with asymmetric, twisty angles. Like the look? Get some tips for achieving the casual style when you read more.

Using a shine-enhancing, medium-hold gel like Kiehl's Clean-Hold Styling Gel ($15), blow dry the hair with a round brush for volume and soft curl.
Create a side part in the front, leaving all of the hair from the back of the ear to the front of the hairline out. Sweep the hair behind the lighter side of the part towards the opposite, heavier side. Secure the hair by creating a loose ponytail with an elastic band, using bobby pins to anchor where needed.
Tuck and pin some of the loose ends of the ponytail under the band. Then, twist and pin some of the other loose ends for a tousled effect.
Next, take a few chunky pieces from the front sections of the hair and twist them back into the ponytail. Secure with bobby pins. Finish off by loosely curling the remaining pieces in the front for a bohemian look.

Are you in between haircut appointments? Or maybe you're like me, and you're looking to save money by going to your stylist less often. While we're on the topic, be sure to check out some recession-proof hair color tips for low-cost ideas on keeping color looking fresh. Earlier, I shared with you a few tips on stretching out a haircut, and here are some more:

Protect yourself: Sunlight and damage from heat can result in unhealthy, fried-looking hair. Keep your hair on track by using heat protection before plugging in that flat iron or curling iron. Also, consider using a spray-in sunscreen on your locks, like Aveda Sun Care Protective Veil ($20).
Big bang theory: Take up those offers on complimentary bang trims. You'll look instantly more polished. Better yet, give yourself the DIY treatment.
Fake it: Frustrated? Try fake-it style to experiment with different lengths. Bobby pins are always your friend, especially when they have a little something extra special, like these Gem Bobby Pins ($10) from Free People.
Time crunch: If you don't have lots of time for regular trips to the stylist, consider a medium to long style with subtle layers. It should grow out nicely and leave you with lots of room for styling options.

How To: Tamara Ecclestone's Roller Curls

Tamara Ecclestone looks like an old-time Breck girl as she posed for photos as the new official face of hairdresser Royston Blythe. Tamara's hair is coifed in cascading curls, an old fashioned hairdo that became popular in the 1980's and has since never gone out of style.

Styling products and beauty tools like volumiser, hairspray and rollers as the secret ingredient to creating this kind of bounce. This look takes time, as opposed to the relaxed, beachy waves hairdo that you learnt to create yesterday, however it's easy to acheive.

For five step directions on how to get sexy, velcro-roller curls at home, just read more.

STEP 1: Begin by using a volumising shampoo and conditioner. Towel dry hair (very gently) and apply an anti-frizz serum, a thickening spray to the roots of your hair and a heat-protection spray all over. Check out my recommendations here.
STEP 2: Next, blow dry hair straight until it's 95% dry in sections. As you dry each section (start from the bottom up and leave the crown wet) and the hair is still hot, wrap the hair winding it from bottom to top using a large velcro roller. Although this is intended to stick in place without any assistance, I like to secure the rollers using bobby pins or claw clips.
STEP 3: Now that you've finished the majority of your hair, it's time to work on the most important part - the crown. Again, dry hair and use the rollers however, wind them away from the face this time for extra fullness. Once you are finished, carefully heat the hair up again. When it's hot, switch your dryer to the cool setting so that the hair sets. Leave in the rollers for about 20 minutes (this is a great time to do your makeup).
STEP 4: Mist hair all over with a light hold hairspray. Let it dry for about one minute before taking out the rollers. Unwind them gently and then flip hair upside down. Shake your head to loosen the curls and then flip your head back up.
STEP 5: Finger comb a part and use a boar bristle brush to smooth hair into place (if necessary). Lastly, spritz either a setting lotion or a medium to light hold hairspray all over. Voila - you're gorgeous!

In my opinion, Natalie Portman was the shining star on the red carpet last night. Her Grecian Rodarte dress was young, fun, flattering, and I just adored the happy and bright bubblegum pink colour. Her makeup was also girly perfection. She wore pretty purples on her lids, pale pink on her cheeks and lavender on her lips. Lucky for us, I've also got the skinny on her hair. Kevin Mancuso, the Creative Director for Nexxus, created an intricate retro-waved updo for the ultimate glamourous old Hollywood look.

STEP 1: Begin by applying a volumizer to the hair to the roots of wet hair for body and texture. Next, use a palm-sized amount of medium-hold mousse such as Nexxus Mousse Plus Volumizing Foam Styler and distribute evenly.

STEP 2: Then, use a large round brush, and blow-dry hair concentrating on the ends so that it stays smooth. When hair is 100% dry, take a one or one-and-a-half inch curling iron and create waves making sure to curl hair away from your face.

STEP 3: Once your're finished, make a slight side-part and pull hair back and away from the face. Then, section hair off, twist it back and pin it so that the finished look is a knot-inspired updo. To add a little sparkle, pin a brooch or pin into the back of your hair.

STEP 4: Lastly, mist your entire head with a light-hold hairspray, such as Nexxus Comb Thru, to help secure the style throughout the evening.
