New Moon: Better Than Twilight

Let's be honest: for most of you, it doesn't matter what I - or any critics for that matter - have to say about New Moon, the incredibly anticipated sequel to last year's Twilight. The film started breaking box office records before it was even released, and audiences will flock to the theaters for weeks to come. On the plus side, a ticket to New Moon is a win even if you're not a Twihard - provided that you know what you're getting into.

New Moon is not incredibly acted, and it doesn't boast impressive dialogue or larger-than-life special effects. But it's not trying to be the Best Picture of the Year, so I can only critique it for what it is: a fantasy movie about a love triangle between a werewolf, a vampire, and a teenage girl. The movie picks up a few months after where Twilight left off. Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is blissfully in love but she can't fight her insecurities about growing older than her perpetually seventeen vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). All Bella wants for her eighteenth birthday is for Edward to change her into a bloodsucker, but a close call with his brother drives Edward to break up with Bella and leave town instead.

The drama following Bella's abandonment is everything we remember from high school heartbreak, from Bella's night terrors to the glazed over look in her eye. The anguish and pain are easily seen on Stewart's face, and her innermost thoughts are revealed to the audience through letters to Edward's sister Alice that will never be sent. After months of moping, Bella finally starts to open up to Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), a family friend. As Bella struggles to find hope in a life without Edward, her friendship is complicated by Jacob's romantic feelings for Bella and made worse when Jacob discovers that he's a werewolf (and an enemy to all vampires).

The surprise of the movie is Lautner's performance. We've seen and heard about those muscles countless times before, but he also packs enough charm and charisma into his Jacob that you truly see him as more than just Bella's unrelenting admirer / best friend. He presents himself as a viable suitor for Bella's heart, and it's hard not to root for him against Robert Pattinson's wooden (albeit handsome) Edward. Stewart and Pattinson have chemistry to spare in Twilight, but in New Moon, Bella's relationship with Jacob seems hopeful and comfortable while her scenes with Edward are mostly awkward and frankly not as much fun to watch.

The movie belongs to Stewart and Lautner, but their melodrama is balanced out by the characters who pad out the cast. Yes, we meet the wolf pack and the Volturi, but for the most part the Forks residents and beyond make for some much-needed comic relief. The downside is that while it's funnier than what you'd expect, not all of the laughs are intentional (a scene where Jacob's temper rivals that of The Incredible Hulk comes to mind).

It doesn't take more than a grain of salt to appreciate New Moon for what it is - a film that stays true to its origin and delivers the necessary elements to ensure that you'll be back when the next installment of the franchise comes our way.

Robert Pattinson Visits Letterman and Says No to Naked Fans

New Moon finally opens tomorrow, and the hardworking cast must be looking forward to a break sometime soon! Robert Pattinson headed to The Late Show with David Letterman in New York City last night, and was greeted by a huge gathering of fans screaming his name. You can check out the crowds plus videos of the interview under the cut, and he revealed on Ellen that fans will literally do anything for him - he said:

"[A fan] said... 'What can I do to get your attention?' I was like um, just take your clothes off.... She stood there and frantically started taking her clothes off and got dragged out of the room by security. I never felt more terrible."

Oops, looks like that's one joke he won't make again!

Robert, Kristen, Taylor and the Whole New Moon Cast Hit the Red Carpet at Their Big LA Premiere!

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner were the last New Moon stars to arrive on the red carpet in LA last night, but the crowds were happy to wait for the big three! They all looked fantastic - especially Kristen in her gorgeous Oscar de la Renta and sexy hair, who stopped to talk about how happy she was to be at an event with the fans. She said she doesn't have a favorite of all the hot dresses she's worn while out promoting the movie, but fell in love with this one when she saw it. Robert greeted all the fans with a huge smile, excitedly signing autographs for as many people as he could. He flashed an adorable smile to us when they announced Kristen's arrival right behind him, though the two were spread out and didn't pose on the red carpet together. The signs all over the event were amazing, showing the dedication of the Twilight lovers some of whom camped out for days before the big event.

Jennie Garth accompanied her husband Peter Facinelli, but joked that the scene she was most excited to see was Robert Pattinson shirtless! Always the understanding partner, Peter said that he sees where she's coming from since she's seen him shirtless thousands of times. Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene hit the premiere at almost the same time, meeting up on the red carpet for some interviews - though at one point he stepped on her train, whoops! Nikki Reed and Elizabeth Reaser were excited to see each other and Dakota Fanning stood tall in her sky-high heels. Kristen happily posed with Joan Jett and Dakota after they all worked together on The Runaways. The whole cast was so excited to see so many fans out to support the movie and for it finally to be released this Friday. PopSugarUK Meets The New Moon Cast Part Three: Robert on Music, Immortality and Harry Potter Versus Twilight!

Robert Pattinson is back in Los Angeles ahead of New Moon's premiere tonight, bringing his promotional tour of Europe to a close. I was lucky enough to meet Robert, Kristen and Taylor when they visited London, and Rob looked gorgeous in a white shirt and suit, which he later wore to the UK fan event. I've already brought you Rob and Kristen's response to questions about their relationship, as well as the pair's revelations about their kissing scenes, and now I've got the lowdown on Rob's future music plans, what he thinks about immortality versus ageing, and the differences between working on Harry Potter and Twilight:

On whether he's concerned Twilight will overshadow his music:
"I want to do gigs again, and I guess the only way to do gigs is you have to get an album to silence everyone and then you can play as many gigs as you want. I really miss it. I am really afraid of being overshadowed by it. That's why I haven't done any gigs or released anything for ages. I think it does make you set your standards higher, because you need to overshadow this massive thing, so it's tough. You've got to be winning Grammys before you do another open-mic [laughs]."

On whether immortality would be a good thing or a bad thing:
"It depends. If I stayed my exact same mental capacity then I would not want to be immortal [laughs]. I don't know. I wouldn't want to be considered young forever. I like the innate wisdom that comes with being old. People just think you know more, and treat you with a little bit more respect. I'd like to be able to just choose however old I am whenever I wanted."
On the differences between working on the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises:
"When I went into Harry Potter it was the fourth one, everybody knew each other. The crew had been working together for 10 years... people had married each other! Everything was so well oiled. Starting Twilight, I don't know if it would be like the first Harry Potter, but it's interesting to see there's so many different warring energies. The studio knew they had a trilogy at the time so it seemed like people think that certain criteria need to met to set up that kind of franchise. Catherine obviously had an Indie background, me and Kristen really had strong people, so it was a very volatile set in a lot of ways. But the success of the first one made everything clear for the second."

I was lucky enough to meet Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart yesterday at the New Moon press conference ahead of the UK fan event last night. The trio revealed lots of backstage gossip from the set, and opened up about their personal lives too. Taylor talked about his daredevil approach to doing his own stunts, Robert spoke about his music and the differences between working on the Twilight and Harry Potter franchises, and Kristen dealt with questions about her relationship with Rob by talking about getting to a higher level with actors she works with. All that's still to come, but for now read all about how Taylor and Robert got their hot bodies for shirtless scenes, and what Kristen had to say about kissing Robert.

On how Taylor bulked up for New Moon:
Taylor: "Obviously it required a lot of hours in the gym, but I found the most important part for me was the eating process and it was actually the most difficult. I had to double or triple my calorie intake. It was a matter of eating every two hours. And just disgusting things like meat patties, raw almonds, and sweet potatoes."
Kristen: "Sweet potatoes were the grossest, in baggies!" [laughs]
Taylor: "It was definitely a lot of hard work, but worth it."

Robert: "It's just natural. [laughs] You get a lot of nipple shots in this film. I was really terrible. I hadn't worked out at all until I saw Taylor at the beginning of the year. And it was quite good for the movie as well, because I did feel incredibly inadequate. It made me feel a little bit emasculated with my pre-pubescent girl's body with A-cups!"
On what it's like to kiss Robert:
Kristen: "It's pretty cool."
Robert: "It's a-mazing!" [laughs]

PopSugarUK Meets The New Moon Cast Part Two: Kristen and Robert Respond to Relationship Rumours!

Kristen Stewart changed out of her sheer dress and into jeans and a t-shirt for dinner at a Spanish fish restaurant with Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner last night, after they attended the fan event in Madrid. I caught up with the trio when they were in London earlier this week, and the question on everyone's lips was what's happening between Rob and Kristen, especially after those hand holding pictures! While the pair were happy to talk about kissing scenes, their response to this particularly tricky question was somewhat different. When asked how their personal relationship affects their working relationship, Robert laughed and said "it becomes very speculative", but Kristen gave a fuller and more intriguing answer:

"Any good relationship that I've ever had with an actor has always been so emotional and personal. If you don't have that then you're just lying, and I have that with Taylor and everybody that I've ever worked with that I've ever gotten something from. You need that. It doesn't mess with you because you're better friends with someone on set and you need to be playing different characters. You're on a higher level of getting each other, and so you're more comfortable and thus more able to give a more honest performance."

How has your family responded to your fame?
Kristen: "My family's embarrassingly proud of me. My brothers get overtly protective, so I've made rules now, like you can't go outside and scream at people if they have cameras. But they're embarrassingly proud."
How do you prepare yourself to meet your adoring screaming fans?
Taylor: "I don't think there is any preparation."
Kristen: "No there's really not. When you have that amount of human energy thrust at you, it doesn't matter how much you think about how cool it is, or the fact that it happens all the time, I think it's an undeniable life force. And that's why I get so nervous. Literally I can feel so much... energy."
Taylor: "We live off the fans' adrenaline."
Kristen: "Sometimes [laughs] We need it to live, all the time. It's like, if it stops we're going to die!"
Robert: "You wear a lot of layers as well. I always find myself wearing a lot of layers so they can't see you hyperventilating. That's a good preparation technique!"

Robert, Kristen, and Taylor Are Up Late For New Moon

Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner grabbed dinner together in Madrid last night after premiering New Moon in the city. It was another long day for the gang, who worked up their appetites by going from the screening right to another press event. Their promotional tour has been full of fun moments, and it's pretty impressive that the trio appear to be having good times doing everything from photo calls to fan meet and greets and question and answer sessions. Rob and Kristen looked especially thrilled during their special hand-holding moment, but unfortunately that's a sight we aren't treated to often.

Taylor, Kristen and Robert Feel The Love at UK Fan Event
