Say What? Megan Fox Talks Girl-on-Girl Hatred
Nov 13 2009 - 6:00am "The problem is, if they think you’re attractive, you’re either stupid or a whore or a dumb whore. The instinct among girls is to attack the jugular.” — Megan Fox tries to explain why she's not too popular with the ladies. The actress, who is on the cover of this weekend's New York Times Magazine, is having a hard time gaining traction with a female audience.

I agree to an extent that girls can get catty and we have trouble dealing with our insecurities.. but on the other hand maybe you really are just stupid, a wh*re, or a dumb wh*re? I swear to god, Megan Fox. And this is not my cattyness or jealousy speaking, as I'm hardly catty and when I'm jealous of someone I'm not afraid to admit it, but when is she going to step back and take a look at the way she's portrayed herself and see maybe she's just not coming across as a very nice girl? I used to to think she made some good eye candy *at best* but she's slowly becoming more unattractive to me.

Now, hot women I can barely stand because of how hot they are, Jessica Alba. But, she seems like a nice girl. As far as celebrities go that's good enough for me. Megan Fox is just downright dislikable unless you have a penis. What a load of crap. "People love me because I'm hot and people hate me because I'm hot."

She was very, very unlikable in Jennifer's Body. The crew of Transformers 2 wrote a public letter that totally excoriated her for being a b on wheels.

I don't really like or dislike her. But, I think for women to like a starlet, there has to be an element of being relatable. She totally lacks this.

I know that jealousy and competitiveness can be an aspect of hating on another girl, but there are plenty of attractive women out there that I respect and adore, so I have to conclude that attitude is a huge part of being likable.

I've only experienced that with people who are just insecure. Freshman year college this one girl constantly called me a moron and insinuated I was a wh*re despite the fact that I had higher grades in more advanced classes and higher SAT scores than her and never hooked up with anyone I wasn't dating.

I love how she constantly invents new ways to talk about how much she's in love with herself Sticking out tongue

What she said though reminds me of an Ani Difranco song:

And God help you if you are an ugly girl
Course too pretty is also your doom
Because everyone harbors a secret hatred
For the prettiest girl in the room
And God help you if you are a phoenix
And you dare to rise up from the ash
A thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
While you are just flying past

I don't think it's about "how boyfriends/husbands" react to Megan Fox. That sounds sooo . . . Desperate Housewives and plays into this idea that all women are petty, catty, b*tches who are single-minded and determined to hang on to their men. I certainly don't have friends like that. I think it's much deeper. I think when the dominant culture tells women that unless they look like Megan Fox they're not valued and someone that looks like Megan Fox comes a long and says those same women are b*tchy and haters because they're just jealous . . . well, it's a one-two punch that's hard not to get pissed at.

Megan Fox is benefiting from a system that objectifies women. She shot to fame allowing Michael Bay's camera to zoom up her skirt.

I wish someone like Fox would say, "I get it. I became famous playing into a system that celebrates the fact that men find me sexually desirable and doesn't value women beyond that criteria

The best example I can think of is when she hosted SNL. No matter what skit they were doing, she was always being Megan Fox. She never dropped that character. She seemed uncomfortable and out of place through the whole show, as if she couldn't permit herself to relax and be vulnerable. Because she, as a persona and an archetype, is something very limited and controlled that is only acceptable, and only makes sense, in a very specific context (magazines and underdeveloped hot chick roles). She is pure, unthreatening, accomodating sexuality; not a human being who happens to be sexy, but the embodiment of sexuality itself. Her ability to control and limit herself is the reason for her success, and she knows it.

This feels like a complex version of the pat on the back my mom used to give me when i came home from school saying that I'd been picked on.

    "they're just jealous, honey."

As someone who finds Megan Fox to be someone whom I will never meet and whose public image means nothing to my personal life, the idea that people have heated emotions about her in either direction is mind numbing.

Sure, if you're a fan, be a fan. I am not a fan of Kathy Griffin, so I simply don't pay any attention to her. In the end, attention, negative or positive, is fueling her public appearance and keeping her career at a boom, regardless of her obvious lack of real, raw talent as an actress.

Maybe I've missed something, but I'm pretty sure we still have free will. Be a conscientious objector instead of a hate monger. I'm really not sure why this became an issue

Women can be mean and awful to each other, and I suspect Megan Fox got Mean Girled HARD when she was in high school (her Wiki entry mentions she was bullied, was a late bloomer, and she left early) and never quite bounced back -- I don't think she's had the chance, going from cutthroat high school straight to false, superficial Hollywood. That and I think she's now slightly afraid of women, based on that experience, and so hasn't had the chance to alter her thinking with good female friendships.

I also kind of wonder if adult female reaction to her has something of the false FOX "fair and balanced" dichotomy, where you level the field by acknowledging a positive but then also present a negative. "Megan Fox is gorgeous, but I hear she's a nightmare to work with" or "She's stunning, but stupid" or the backhanded "she looks like a pornstar" comment.

When it comes down to it, though, pretty girls sometimes have it rough -- and often, it's so subtle that it can be overlooked by others. The sisterhood does eat its own sometim

This is just like that comment Jessica Alba made awhile back about "life being hard for pretty people...." something or other. Why is it that these women think they'll win sympathy from female fans by whining? Come on! These ARE NOT real issues. Try saying something like that to a paraplegic or someone else with a disability. Megan needs to shut up and do something real with her life. We don't hate you because you're beautiful, we hate you because you're ignorant and arrogant.

I don't like Megan Fox because I think that if I met her at a party she wouldn't like me.
If I met Kate Winslet at a party, she would think I was smart and interesting and we would talk about our kids. If I met Drew Barrymore at a party I think she would think I was fun and it wouldn't take any convincing to get her to drunk karaoke. And if I met Jennifer Aniston at a party I think that she would be entertained by my stories, oh, and maybe we have read some of the same books.

Random "Interesting" Actress Facts (from the top of my head):
    - Natalie Portman is a vegetarian, has a degree from Harvard and speaks fluent Hebrew.
    - Julia Stiles has a degree in English Literature.
    - Mira Sorvino is fluent in Mandarin.
    - Angelina Jolie is tirelessly devoted to the UNHCR.
    - Eva Longoria has a kinesiology degree and was accepted into a kinesiology Masters program. She did L'oreal commercials in English, French and Spanish without using voiceovers.
    - Megan Fox is really, really pretty.

I mean, seriously! If Megan Fox has done cool things, she's certainly not putting that information out there. How can she honestly expect women to be interested in her? How can she expect ANYONE to be interested in her? Attracted to her, sure. Her looks are on full display. But her personality? Her intelligence? I can't read her mind- if she wants women to take her seriously and like her, she needs to give them a reason to do so.

Also, and I speak only for myself here, her claim, "Women hate me because I'm pretty," really irks me because she wasn't born that way. Not that she was ugly before the boob and nose jobs, but she looked like a completely different person before, and one much less sexualized and designed for the male gaze.

So when she whines about women hating her for her looks - she made herself look that way. On purpose. And she brings her looks up alll the damn time. It's hard for me to feel any sympathy for her on that count. I don't hate her because she's pretty, I dislike her because her looks are her answer to everything.

She has pretty eyes and her eyebrows are great but I don't know about her skin (looks like it could be blotchy, ruddy or rosacea or something) and I keep hearing she was altered cosmetically so I'm just 'meh' about her looks...women can be jealous but I don't that that is the case here. She has been packaged and marketed towards men and hasn't proven herself as an actress.

There are lots of pretty actresses, maybe not uber smart or anything but they still try to stretch creatively and their not hell bent on being the next Angelina Jolie or Marilyn Monroe (and when they are we don't like them either). Also you don't have to try so hard to be outrageous, she should be thoughtful instead because whenever she is trying to pose as self confident and/or aggressive she just comes across as sexist. And sexism is even worse coming from another women if you can believe. I think that may be her main problem.

I think that Megan Fox is in a "perpetually high school" state of mind. The way she speaks about women and their behavior is just ridiculous. She is trying to make it seem as if all women hate anyone who is pretty -- which is not the case. It's one thing to envy and another thing to hate. Some people may very well hate her based on her looks, I would like to think that anyone that is above the high school years would flirt with the idea that looks can only get you so far, and therefore pursue other endeavors, like teaching or marketing. Megan seems catty, immature, and unrealistic. She claims people hate her because of this so-called beauty that not everyone sees, including myself. It takes good traits and being personable to attract people to you in a good way. She makes herself totally unlikeable by being a stuck up b*tch, and raving on about how her life is such and such because she is pretty. Does she have anything else to say about herself? For someone so smart she certainly seems to lack some common sense.

Sure people may hate you because you are are pretty. Sure some women you deal with now go for the jugular. But life is not high school, and in reality, the adults I know seem to function very well socially, aren't completely tactless and superficial. If you get your head out of your ass and you start to be a likeable person (which is possible without being fake), then people will not be hating you as much.

I was trying to say was that girls often know that looks don't get you very far, so they developed other traits and skills that they can use in the real world. It doesn't look as if Megan Fox is the kind of person who tried to do anything more with herself than be "hot".

Megan Fox is definitely pretty, but I don't think it's fair to say that women hate her because of this. MANY women in Hollywood are very pretty and have tons of female fans. I think the problem with Megan Fox is, that's really all she seems to be: just prettiness and sex. So yeah, girls aren't really going to get to excited about that because, well, there isn't much to relate to. It's like getting angry that women aren't fans of Jenna Jameson.

In addition, she seems sooo fake and focused on her looks. I have never ever seen a picture of her without a face full of makeup. Even in pictures that claim she isn't wearing makeup, it's completely obvious (at least to me and a few friends) that she is wearing a lot of it: mascara, eyeliner, blush, lip gloss, etc. I also find this hard to relate to because I tend not to wear so much makeup. So yeah, guys may think she's hot, but I don't think she's very real.

IMO: Amanda Peet is my favorite pretty girl

Saying women hate me because I'm beautiful is NOT going to win them over. The key is to be relatable if you want women to like you. Yes she is a stunning woman, but if she could find a way for other women to relate to her she would be more well liked IMHO.

I think this statement is somehow true. Its like if your hot, you have to go the extra damn mile to make women like you, because truth be told they *are* jealous, and *do* try to take you down a notch and distance themselves from you for whatever made up reason. Ive noticed this in my own life, as I am an attractive woman and very striking (tall and broad shouldered with long blond hair), and ive been on the receiving end of this jealousy and it sucks. Sometimes I wish i could pull out the "ugly card" that gets endearance from so many ordinary people, but I do have to work extra hard at seeming approchable and nice whereas other people seem automatically relatable because they are a zero threat.

Actually, sometimes I find myself liking Megan Fox a little more because of all the stupid things she says. She knows those ridiculous quotes will create thousands of threads like this all over the Internet, generating more publicity for her. At least she knows good PR...

Anyway, about this particular quote... I do think women hate her a little unfairly sometimes; not because of her looks, and not just because she comes off as conceited and ignorant, but because of all the attention she gets without merit. Women can understand why Charlize Theron or Angeline Jolie are worshiped, they're talented and smart on top of being ridiculously gorgeous. But Megan is just a hot girl who got lucky in Hollywood. It can be a little revolting to a lot of women...

Juicebox07: you have every right to be hurt, your boyfriend was real jerk! Even if you asked about your hotness vs. Megan's, there are sensible ways of saying that she is more attractive (after all she is a celebrity). Any decent guy would say so in a way that would make feel good anyway.

FamousFox, I also have a hard time seeming relatable or approachable, but not because I'm a knockout beauty, but because I really am that way and take full responsibility for it.
So while I don't mean to diminish or question the fact that you're gorgeous, maybe the distance you feel from women stems more from your (real or just perceived) coldness.
I know one of my best friends is utterly beautiful, really pretty (also blonde, slim and blue-eyed), but everyone (including girls/women) likes her because she always comes across as sweet and nice to be around or talk to.
