Beards have gone in and out fashion since ancient Greece. Peter I of Russia ordered all officials to shave their beards, and England's Henry the VIII imposed a tax on beards while growing one himself.
For the last 30 years, we've seen goatees and mutton chops and other styles I can't begin to name, but the full-on beard has been all but absent.

I stuck with Project Runway for at least two of Heidi's pregnancies, so I know enough about fashion to criticize it but not enough to thread a spool. I know avant-garde fashion is hyperbolic and theatrical; it's meant to inspire. Yet I hope — and am overly confident — these 20 looks from Berlin and Milan Fashion Week will stay off the streets, inspiring nothing but a safe and swift return to jeans and sweaters.

It's no longer a stereotype; a study has concluded that men feel less guilty than women. Whether it's because they genuinely hurt someone or forgot a friend's birthday, the Spanish Journal of Psychology reports hombres are less likely to feel remorse, sorrow, empathy, or anger.
The study used the very scientific method of quizzing 300 men and women, ages 15-50, about hypothetical situations (taking back a promise, not visiting a relative in the hospital, snapping at a friend) and women displayed significantly higher levels of guilt.

After the rise of the celebrity chef, men fell into society's cooking line by taking up the hobby like it's snowboarding. Now a magazine for men, called Beef, has launched in Germany, solidifying cooking's place as a socially acceptable masculine hobby. We could thank Top Chef or the manly meat trend (brining, smoking, foraging), and that would probably be accurate.

The number of men who pay for sex doubled between 1995 and 2005. Half of the men say they were under age 21 the first time they solicited a prostitute. One man said his father took him and his brother to a brothel when they were teens.

Like it or not, the cupcake craze is still so, so far from over. On the heels of frozen frosting shots, cupcake cars, and Twilight cupcakes, a new concept emerges: Cupcakes for dudes.The Village Voice tipped us off to New York's Butch Bakery, which refers to itself as "where butch meets buttercream." Here, devil's food-fanatical alpha males can choose from flavors like Jackhammer and Driller.

Poor (mainstream) men. Without makeup or hair dye, those looking for in-your-face self expression must turn to facial hair. One beard expert explains that men ditch shaving because it makes them feel special — rebellious and playful at the same time.

Sometimes a man's fashion sense can get in the way of his natural sexiness. And apparently, bad fashion can also cause violence. Last week we heard that a popular nightclub in Australia banned certain clothing (think Ed Hardy tops and popped collars) because that style of dress was causing bar fights.
