TV Tonight: The Series Premiere of TNT's HawthoRNe

Tonight Jada Pinkett Smith returns to the small screen for the first time in years. She stars in the new TNT drama, HawthoRNe. Like another new show, Showtime's Nurse Jackie, HawthoRNe follows the personal and professional tribulations of a nurse.

Christina Hawthorne (Smith) may be small, but when it comes to fighting for her patients and their families, she's a force to be reckoned with. By the looks of preview clips and the scene I've included below, this is one TV nurse who is bound to make a lasting impression.

In addition to fighting for her patients at work, Hawthorne fights to remain sane at home. The show takes place one year after her husband's death and we watch the tough nurse struggle to manage her own grief while also trying to be there for her rebellious daughter, Camille. The show also stars Michael Vartan as chief of surgery and Suleka Mathew, among others. Her personal life aside, Hawthorne seems like the kind of flawed but dedicated nurse people might look up to.

Will Takes on Katrina While Jada Plays Head Nurse

Jada Pinkett Smith brought Will along to the Turner networks' Upfronts in NY earlier today. She was the life of the party in her short cocktail dress, running around and chatting with other actors like Kyra Sedgwick and Tyler Perry. Jada's starring alongside Michael Vartan in a new medical show called Hawthorne, which premieres next month. Meanwhile, Will has news of his own to celebrate - his production company just acquired the rights to a true story about an ex-Marine dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Adrian Hosts an Absolut Blast For Cristiano and Jamie

Adrian Grenier gathered sports stars and actors at The Kress in LA last night to celebrate the launch of Absolut Los Angeles, a limited-edition vodka to honor the city. Cristiano Ronaldo took a break from his shirtless sunbathing, which is probably a good call considering that tan to mingle with Terrell Owens and Jaime Pressly. The soccer star was all about the thumbs up, though he apparently didn't want to share the love with LC. Fellow Entourage star Kevin Connolly was there to hang out with his buddy and probably live out a few scenarios that would be right at home on their show.

David Cross, Michael Vartan to Star in Demoted

When I think of David Cross I think "ooh, funny!" (actually I think "never-nude" but that's for another conversation). When I think of Michael Vartan I think first "hot" and then "Vaughn," but never "funny!" And yet, these two will be paired up for the comedy Demoted. The Hollywood Reporter has more details:

Vartan will play Rodney McAdams, a hotshot Treadline Tires sales associate who delights in tormenting his less-than-cool colleague, Ken (Cross). But when their boss suddenly dies, Ken is promoted and assigns Rodney to a secretarial job as payback, giving the male chauvinist a taste of his own medicine.

I love to see Cross getting more work. And though these two seem strange together, maybe they'll have a great funny man/straight man thing going on. What do you think?

Rogue Trailer: Fun-Scary or Just Dumb?

Now, I'm as happy as the next gal that our beloved ~~Vaughn~~ Michael Vartan is getting work. And yet. . . a crocodile horror movie? Really? Well, OK, maybe it'll be the next Jaws. Or something.

Take a look at the trailer for Rogue, which opens this Friday April 25, and tell me: does it look like a fun-scary movie? Or just kinda dumb?

Michael Vartan Is Still a Big Shot (For Now)

Michael Vartan arrived in Melbourne today for some serious poker tournament. Sounds like something one of the characters on Big Shots would do, but not his. Vartan plays the one real endearing guy on the show about rich CEO men BSing about acting like women. Unfortunately we're not so sure how long we'll get to watch Michael on the small screen. After being shelved for a few weeks, ABC is bringing back Big Shots to air three more episodes. Depending on how well these do will determine whether or not the struggling drama will be picked up - that is, assuming this sad writers' strike ever comes to an end. Maybe a second career as a poker champion isn't such a bad idea after all.

Movies Rock J Lo, Marc, Beyonce and Fergie

Last night in Hollywood, Condé Nast brought together music and screen to celebrate at the first ever Movies Rock event. The red carpet was all about drama from Beyonce's green number which looked like she would waddle rather than strut in to Fergie's sexy lingerie-esque dress. Jennifer Lopez positively glowed (and is sooo big!) while Marc posed with his hand on her belly - protective already of their little one. Both Josh Duhamel and Josh Jackson went with ties and sweaters, though Pacey's maybe shrunk a bit too much in the dryer. Inside the show, the audience was treated to performances from the all star talent - more on that in a little. How do you think all the ladies (and men) were looking? Watch the event this Friday night on CBS.

Pilot Watch: "Big Shots"

The networks have announced their fall schedules, but which of the series will actually be worth watching? Throughout the summer, as I watch the pilots, I'll be posting my first impressions. A lot can change before a show makes it to air, so these aren't comprehensive reviews, just quick thoughts on how the shows look now. Today's installment: ABC's "Big Shots."

What's it about? "Men are the new women" is the mantra of this "Sex and the City" for men, which traces the disastrous personal lives of four high-powered CEOs.

Who's in it? Michael Vartan, Dylan McDermott, Christopher Titus, Joshua Malina

The good: It's a strong cast filled with three TV powerhouses (Vartan, McDermott, Titus) as well as nerdy Malina, an Aaron Sorkin favorite. A show like this can live or die by the guys' chemistry, and they play off each other decently well in the pilot.

The bad: Everything else. The most commonly uttered phrase seemed in the pilot seemed to be "we're men" - in case we could forget. It's trite and dull, with stereotypical jokes about demanding women, sexual fetishes, marriage therapy, etc. Also, much as I love Malina, he seems utterly out of place as a powerful businessman.

Will I watch? I doubt it - and, furthermore, I don't think it's worthy of the post-"Grey's Anatomy" time slot.

Michael Vartan As a Serial Killer?

Cute Michael Vartan was spotted grabbing some Starbucks in Hollywood. We miss seeing Michael weekly on Alias, but we may get to see him back on the big screen soon. Producer Alan Robinson wants him to play a serial killer in his upcoming movie Worst Nightmares. Here's more:

“Nightmares” tells of a serial killer who knocks off his victims based on what their particular fear is – be it a fear of drowning, a fear of heights, or in my case, a fear of being sentenced to watch “Full House” re-runs on loop for a weekend.

“It’s a really great script”, Robinson tells Moviehole from his Sydney office. “We plan to shoot it this Summer in Los Angeles”.

A high-calibre cast has already expressed interest in the film, he tells. Its believed that Greg Kinnear, Bridget Moynahan, Lance Henriksen and Michael Vartan may be in early talks. “He would be the serial killer. I think he’d be great – something very different for him”, says Robinson, of the actor who next headlines fellow Aussie Greg McLean’s “Rogue”.

Sounds a bit cheesy - stay tuned to see if Michael signs up for this role...

K-Fed Gets Down to Details

Britney may have dumped K-Fed but it doesn't look like he's going away anytime soon. Last night he was at the Details Magazine Insider Party along with Michael Vartan, Daniel Dae Kim and a few Laguna Beach alums. Kevin is trying to change his image, ditching his wife-beaters for blazers (or sweater coats) and trying to act a little more sophisticated. Still, that's going to be hard to keep up for long. K-Fed is going back to wrestling to pay his hefty legal bills. He plans to have a rematch with Cena on WWE on New Year's.
