Mamma Mia! Invites Families to Sing it!

You know the scene in My Best Friend's Wedding when the dude pretending to be with Julia Roberts breaks into song while smack in the middle of a speech, and as Hollywood would have it, the whole table joins in? The peeps below made the scene a little less Hollywood and a little more Broadway. They had a fantastic performance, but I wanna know how everyone in attendance at this wedding (even the father of the groom!) had a voice fit for singing. Uh, Twilight Zone much? (Thanks, College Humor!)

The Food Court Musical

Improv Everywhere is known for busting out comedic performances in unlikely locations, so they staged a musical - in a shopping mall food court. It all started with the Hot Dog on a Stick girl crying over spilled lemonade and ended with the whole food court triumphantly singing about napkin shortage. Hungry patrons, clueless that the joke was on them, didn't know whether to laugh or cry. If you ask me, all they had to do was buy a corn dog from the crying chick and tell her to shove it. But that would have made this a lot less funny.

Which TV Show Will Announce a Musical Next?

Apparently, musical episodes of TV shows are the new black. I told you a while back that "Ugly Betty" was mulling a musical episode, and now, according to Variety, "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry is thinking about getting Wisteria Lane to sing and dance, too. If one more show breaks into song, I'll be ready to declare this a full-out trend. So, which show would you bet will be next?

Would You Watch a Musical "Ugly Betty"?

First "Buffy" did a musical episode, then "Scrubs," now ... "Ugly Betty"? The show's cast and crew said this week that a singing, dancing "Betty" is in the works.

Cast members have been talking about doing a musical on the show's podcast for a while now, but I always assumed it was a joke. Earlier this week, though, star America Ferrera told an audience at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences that the cast had been begging to do a musical episode since day one - and the show's executive producer confirmed that a musical is being planned.

While I have mixed feelings about gimmicky TV in general, "Ugly Betty" might be the rare show that can pull off a musical. We've already heard Justin (Mark Indelicato) belt one out in the subway, and Vanessa Williams was a singer first. "Betty" is pretty campy already, and I'm not sure characters breaking into song would even feel out of place.

Meanwhile, the lucky folks in the audience when ABC announces its fall schedule this month will get a bit of a preview: Michael Urie, who plays Marc, has said that he, Mark Indelicato and Becki Newton will be performing a song-and-dance number.

Before all the fame, fortune, eating disorders, curious chemical disturbances, and weekly Simon Cowell bashings, Paula Abdul was an average cutie pie with amazing vocal in-ability. Just goes to show that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

TV Preview: "Scrubs: The Musical"

The countdown to the Jan. 18 broadcast of "Scrubs: The Musical" is officially on. NBC just released another preview of the highly anticipated episode, this one an an ode to number two appropriately titled "Everything Comes Down to Poo." Besides setting the words "rectal cancer" to music for what has to be the first time ever, it also features a kick line led by J.D. and Turk. You can watch it on the show's official site - just scroll down and click on the box that says "featured video."

The poo song is the second one released from the episode, which guest-stars Stephanie D'Abruzzo - better known as Kate Monster from the Broadway musical Avenue Q - as a patient who sees everything as a musical. The first, "Guy Love," is a hilariously tender ballad that explores J.D. and Turk's almost-but-not-quite-gay relationship. It's available as a free download on iTunes through February. Check it out:
