Trend Alert: Turquoise Nail Polish

Among the many qualities that make Whitney Port (of The Hills) so lovely is that she has her own style. I've always thought of Whit as someone who sets trends as opposed to following them. So when I spotted this style star sporting shiny turquoise nail polish, I was excited.

For anyone who's willing to try out a wild new water-colored varnish, get ready for the next big nail trend. You can always go back to my China Glaze review, and here are two more aqua nail polishes.

Nic's Sticks by OPI in Baby Go Bye-Bye ($6.99) is a vibrant turquoise color. This relatively new and easy-to-use nail polish pen is great if you are looking for a quick color fix. I haven't tried them, but there are 30 colors and from what I understand, the only drawback is that they are a little runnier than the original OPI formula. The advantage: the polish dries in just one minute.

Attention all neon lovers: Creative Nail Design in Hot Pop Blue ($10) is a bright aqua nail lacquer for you. There are also two more Hot Pop colors in the collection for those of you who dare to wear bold pink or orange polishes. Trend Alert: Metallic, Bejeweled Nails

Katy Perry isn't the only celebrity hopping on the sparkly, encrusted nail bandwagon. Beyonce had similarly wild nails with heart-shaped jewels on them last night at the MTV Europe Awards, and Kristen Bell was sporting iridescent foiled nails recently, too. I think this trend is so creative and cool, but what about you? If you want to get the look, try Lippmann Collection's Celebrate polish trio or OPI's Designer Series.

Trend Alert: Metallic Nails

On the Autumn/Winter runways at Chanel, Galliano, Prada, and Dior, the mood was all about dark, soft goth appeal and gutsy, edgy glamour.

Nails were darkly metallic, in shades of burnished bronze, glossy crimson, steely silver and shimmering black. After summer's love affair with bright lights, bold colour varnishes – such as canary yellow or bright orange – autumn's mood is more grown-up.

Nails should be slightly longer this season, just peeking over the edge of the finger tips. Keep the shape curved and natural, for a polished effect.

If you only buy one polish, make it Chanel's Le Vernis in Kaleidoscope, (£14.50), it's a perfect metallic shade that suits all skin tones.

I also like Revlon Gold Get 'Em, a pale gold that looks more grown-up than last winter's brassy shades. While, Miss Sporty's Zodiac, (£1.99), at Superdrug, is a cool, metallic beige nude, that works well for a subtle nod to the trend.

I'm smitten by Paul & Joe's smoulderingly, dark metallic shade, 20, as well, for Grecian-style nails. Or try their hard-edged, bright silver Paul & Joe in 21, (£9), to wear with Christopher Kane's oversize sequin-encrusted collection, this fall.

Trend Alert: Alternative Nails

First it was chipped nail polish, then the dark black shades of Goth Glam, and now alternate shades of nail varnish on fingernails is being tipped (ahem, excuse the pun) to be the latest trend.

Model Jodie Kidd and pop star Christina Milian have both been spotted mixing it up, lately. Christina has been contrasting very dark and pale colours together as well as different shades of brights.

Meanwhile Jodie has been photographed with four different neon shades on her nails, for a bright lights, bold colour effect.

I'm not sure if this is going to catch on outside of Fashion Week and possibly Shoreditch, but with the latest autumn/winter beauty trends mixing the punk with the polished, it could be fun to literally try and combine trends. Just read more for how to nail the trend.

My advice is to just stick to two shades and make sure your nails are well manicured, as any chips will just make this look too teenage.

Try tonal colours such as Paul & Joe's dark metallic shade, 20, (£9), with Chanel's Le Vernis in Kaleidoscope, (£14.50), for a modern take on metallic nails.

Alternatively, make like Christina and clash pale and dark. I like Essie Mistique Pink with Butter London polish, (£10), in Branwen's feather; a gorgeously glossy purple-ish black.

Trend Alert: Black Nails on the Red Carpet

Looking back at the Teen Choice Awards, I was surprised to see a trio of black-nailed ladies. Lauren Conrad, Avril Lavigne and Sophia Bush all sported this shade, which I think should be saved for fall and winter-lighten up, ladies! And considering last fall's run on Chanel's Black Satin polish, I'm surprised that this trend is staying around. But if you're going to go dark, here are a few inexpensive choices.

Zoya Nail Polish in Raven ($6) is the perfect long-wearing creamy looking black shade that you've been searching for. For a trendy "It Girl" look, shape nails so that they are short and square. On long nails, black can be a little too Elvira.

It doesn't get anymore basic than OPI Nail Lacquer in Black Onyx ($7.50). This true black is from one of my favorite chip-resistant and long-wearing brands; OPI's polish stays shiny for up to ten days!

Duri Cosmetics Nail Enamel in Black Caviar ($5) is a jet black shade with a hint of dark purple iridescent sparkle for a little added oomph. If you like a little nuance with your color, go for this one, which feels a little more special than matte black shades.

Trend Alert: Raspberry Nails

Following the trend of raspberry lips from the fall runways, we are now seeing raspberry nails making a comeback! Just look at Lindsay Lohan sporting pink tips all over town. It looks like this is her signature color. If red nails are just a little too bold for you, now you can try a pretty pink polish and still be fashion-forward. Here are three great raspberry pinks to choose from.

OPI Classic Nail Lacquer in California Raspberry ($7.50) is a bright and fun deep pinky-punch hue that makes for a perfect transition from summer to fall. Just remember to keep nails short and square, since that's the shape of the moment!

Trend Alert: Fruit Punch Nails

If any of you can get through the summer without shelling out cash on fruity beauty products, please tell me how it's done, because I'm really a sucker for this stuff. First, I was salivating over Bare Escentuals Fruit Smoothies eye shadow collection, and now, I'm ready to pounce on this season's fruit-punch nail color trend.

Style.com recently declared Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Orange Blossom ($18) one of its perfect summer polishes, and now I'm finding it difficult to live without this tropical-melon tone. At the spa last week, I saw a woman getting a pedicure with this polish, and it's just as beautiful on nails as it is in the bottle.

Zoya Smitten Summer 2007 Nail Polish in Sylvie ($5.50) is a yummy guava shade with an iridescent finish and a tiny bit of sparkle.

OPI Classics Nail Lacquer in Strawberry Margarita ($7.50) is a pinker shade that's almost perfect, except that it makes me want a strawberry margarita. Or a daiquiri. I'm not particular.

Estee Lauder Pure Color Nail Lacquer in Coral Reef ($18) is a magenta-raspberry shade with an ultra-shiny finish. These are great polishes that last a long time without chipping.

Well, well, well. I wasn't so sure that this trend would ever catch on, but if Rihanna's wearing it, most likely fans will soon follow suit. The singer paid close attention to detail during New York Fashion Week. Not only is she sporting the newest yellow spring nail trend but she's followed FabSugar's advice by balancing out the yellow out with a grey dress - A+ Rihanna!
