I love living in older buildings, which in contrast to new suburban homes make me say old-man things like "They just don't make houses like this anymore!" But admittedly, old homes do have their modern inconveniences. Russell Versaci's solution to that problem: designing new homes that look old, using traditional forms and salvaged architectural materials. His coffee table book, Creating a New Old House: Yesterday's Character for Today's Home ($26.37), makes a great case, with broad pages full of beautiful homes that you'd think were ages old if no one told you otherwise.

The book puts forth Versaci's pillars of new-old design, including working within architectural rules and using authentic details and durable materials. His points are illustrated immaculately by the gallery of homes that follow, including an 18th century German stone farmhouse/mansion, a Creole cottage with a pigeon roost, a Spanish-revival stucco in California, and a regal Maryland plantation. Even if you don't have the luxury of living in a new-old house, you'll get scads of decorating ideas on how to create the look in your own home.

This (New) Home: Cool Pet House

It's been a while since a fab pet house caught my eye . . . maybe not since Petchitecture! Coming from Down Under, this aptly-named Cool Pet House was created by the equally clever "Funky Pets International." This new abode has fans to keep pooch cool in Summer and temperature controls to make the home toasty in Winter . . . with a remote to set it all. Hey, this home even boasts indoor lighting (for pup to do his homework by?), and a wireless webcam to make sure he's not goofing off while you're away. There's no price listed on the site, so if Fido wants this for his very own, ~~he'll~~ you'll have to call long distance to Australia and ask them yourself!

If you're dreaming of farm animals but you're lacking the farm, these enclosed homes are perfect for backyard egg layers! Created by UK-based Omlet, there are two models – chickens and rabbits – offered stateside. I'm happy to see a couple of these nice homes in the US and I'm hoping more will become available here soon. Last year, the company released that Eglu Cube (seen at the top left) and even offers useful Omlet courses run by an "eggsperienced egluowner" in England (ha!) to cover all the everyday skills required to look after your new feathered friend.

This (New) Home: Dog Is a God

High-concept design has gone to the dogs! First up in the series of This (New) Home, is the Nomad's Dog House. Now, I don't know that much about nomads, but I can't imagine them traveling in fur-lined caravans. This little glorified poochie wagon comes with wheels (obvs), a lockable door, interior carpeting, and coordinating wallpaper (not so obvs). All touches your pet is sure to notice as he rolls around town. And what a retro road trip it will be, too, as this motor home reminds me of a camper from decades past.

In addition to this item, Italian designer Marco Morosini has designed nine others as part of the Dog Is a God project . . . each ringing in at $5,000 a pop. If you want to see a couple more of these canine-luxury dwellings, then you should definitely read more.

Fab Flash: Jonathan Saunders to Show in London Again

September 2009 was a big month for British fashion as London celebrated it's 25th year as a style capital. Many of the UK's biggest names and brands, including Matthew Williamson, Burberry and Jonathan Saunders, brought their designs home creating an amazing buzz around the city.

Although the celebrations are nearly over with, it seems that the experience has left quite the impact on Jonathan Saunders who told Vogue that he intends to stay here for one more season.

He explained, "I just loved showing here in September. It's much easier than New York because I'm still based in London, and I always will be - but I will go back to show in New York next autumn. It's just such a huge country - and nationwide stores like Saks and Barney's give you such huge reach. It's good for a business." I think this is a great boost for London, I wonder if any other designers will follow suit?

Healthy Ways to Deal With Thanksgiving Leftovers

Thanksgiving never seems to be a one-day affair, at least not the food part. Properly stored, leftovers can last up to four days, beckoning you to eat more, more, and then some! This Thanksgiving, resist the urge to overindulge by finding healthier alternatives for your T-day leftovers. Here are a few of our ideas - share your own in the comments section below.

Get rid of them. Buy some inexpensive containers before your meal to pack up leftovers for guests and send friends and family home with the most decadent dishes.
Make a healthy salad. Turkey is packed full of protein and tastes great on a salad. Use leftover cranberry sauce to make a healthy dressing - mix a dab with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Make a turkey curry. Turkey is great in a curry because it easily soaks up the flavors of a sauce. Try using turkey instead of the tofu in our Indian-Spiced Chard recipe.

Make turkey stock. I always like to have broth or stock on hand because it adds a ton of flavor to my cooking and can be the base of a variety of dishes. Storebought broth usually has a ton of added salt, so I think it's best to make your own. Save the carcass of the bird and break it up into a large stock pot, then add mirepoix, garlic, and savory herbs. Cover the entire mixture by at least two inches of water and let simmer for five hours. If the water level falls below the ingredients, add more liquid to the mix. Cool quickly, store in the refrigerator, or freeze.
Use turkey stock to make a delicious soup. Cut up any extra veggies you have leftover from your T-day meal or ingredients, add some barley or brown rice, throw it in your stock, and you've got a simple, tasty soup.
Puree leftover vegetables. Healthy vegetable side dishes are great to have after Thanksgiving, but give them new life and puree them. A veggie puree can be the base of a soup or pasta sauce. Veggie purees can also add moisture to baked goods.
Make an open-faced sandwich. Everybody loves the day after Thanksgiving sandwich. Make your sandwich healthier by only using one slice of bread.
