Is The Prada Phone Worth It?

In a recent article Forbes writer Daniel Lyons points out that there is no logical reason to spend $780 on the Prada phone by LG. A point I wholeheartedly agree with, except for the phone is so darn pretty. The thing is, and Lyons does acknowledge this, there is common sense and then there's fashion sense.

The Prada phone is approximately $200 more than the upcoming iPhone, but does tout the designer label and "oh, it's Prada" factor. Of course, most people expect the iPhone to deliver in terms of its touchscreen technology and the iPod bonus. For those of you who are still aching for the phone despite its price, there may be a few road blocks. Prada was taking pre-orders in its boutiques in New York and Los Angeles this spring, but the phones are now all sold out in the U.S. On top of that, you will need a SIM card from a European or Asian cellular carrier for the phone to work in the U.S., as no local networks recognize the phone.

The New Prada Handset: Love It or Leave It?

The new and improved Prada phone by LG was recently unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Unlike the previous Prada handset, this new model is entirely silver, with a silver-user interface, earphones, and packaging to match. It also includes a slick, new qwerty keyboard on its touchscreen. I may be swayed by the fancy packaging, but I honestly like this phone!

The Dior Phones Are Real and Really Expensive

The rumored Christian Dior phones? Well, they actually exist and will be officially announced today. The company is hoping to tap into new markets in China and Russia, much like Prada and Dolce & Gabbana, its competitors in luxury goods, and those who have already succeeded in the mobile phone industry. The "Dior phones" will be manufactured by ModeLabs and are said to cost around . . . $5,000 each.

I don't see any gold or diamonds adorning the phone, so why the big price tag? The phone is said to include a "mini phone" labeled "My Dior," which is about the size of a USB stick. Basically it's for ridiculously rich women ('cause those are the only people who will be able to afford this phone) who don't want to search through their purses for their phones. They can just answer the tiny one that's clipped on their bag (basically paired via Bluetooth with the main phone). Neat concept, but not worth the hefty price.

Armani Phone? Will Samsung Make Designer Phone?

The Prada and Gucci phones are sooo last season. According to the Korea Herald, Samsung Electronics is teaming up with Italian clothing designer Armani to produce an "Armani phone." An online publication claims a Samsung spokesperson leaked the news, but confirmed nothing is written in stone yet. Here's more:

"Yes, the plans are under consideration by the company," a Samsung spokesman said. "The two companies have not signed a contract yet. The company is going to make a new category called 'IT luxury products' jointly with Armani. The Armani phone will be launched in Europe in October and we plan to expand the brand to other businesses as well."

Of course there's no word on how much an Armani phone would cost, but I assume the price point would fall somewhere near the iPhone and Prada phone, which range from $500 to $600. Because the phone has not officially been revealed all talk is just speculation at this point, but that didn't stop me from dreaming about what the phone might look like if the designers took a little "inspiration" from the iPhone and Aramani cosmetics.

Will Women Defy History With iPhone Purchases?

Last week I shared video footage from the iPhone launch in San Francisco, which exposed the fact that there were very few women (in comparison to men) that stood in line for the iPhone. I think the extreme ratio points to the fact that women tend to be smarter tech shoppers and generally less interested in standing in lines just so they can say they purchased a product on its launch day. Of course that doesn't mean women won't buy the iPhone, because as Shiny Shiny points out, it is the "prettiest phone to come out since the LG Prada" and features a "really easy to use interface."

According to NPR, some experts are saying women may surpass gadget geeks as the largest consumer segment likely to adopt the new $600 iPhone. NPR claims empty nesters, single 20s, dual-income couples and divorced women will be at the top of the iPhone customer list (not necessarily during the launch stage, but down the line). That group is a tad unusual, because it includes some unorthodox gadget consumers.

The claims are based on Credit Suisse report, which puts the iPhone in the luxury product category with Motorola's pink - and once pricey - Razr phone. What do you think? Will more women buy the iPhone because it's considered a "luxury gadget"?

In fact, I know plenty of eligible geeky bachelors that showcase the very best of geekiness: smarts, passion, chic clothing, success in their field and the ability to program your TiVo, computer or Blackberry when you’re not in the mood. In an effort to celebrate this month of love, I have put together a series of interviews with some of the most interesting geeky bachelors I know.

GS: How did you get into the tech world?
Om: I have dreamed of being a journalist all my life, ever since I was a kid. I started as a rookie reporter at a teen magazine, The Weekly Sun in New Delhi, India.

GS: What’s the geekiest thing about yourself?
Om: I often brag about the total computing power in my apartment, and proud of the fact that have a terabyte of data around the house.

GS: What you are looking for in a significant other?
Om: Intelligence, kindness and humor. Someone who I can look at from the corner of my eye and be pleased as punch that I am her guy! Virginia Madsen, except for real!

GS: What are your Top 5 favorite gadgets?

GS: Your line of work means you are exposed to more gadgets and tech news than your average citizen (and blogger) how do you decide what is relevant or necessary?
Om: I have a lot of friends who are not really interested in technology. I hand them the device, and then watch how they react. If they like it or are intrigued by it, it is something worth paying attention to. Otherwise, I go for elegance, simplicity and intuitiveness of the gadget.

GS: How do you feel about people calling you a “geek?” I suppose I should first ask, have you ever been called a "geek?"
Om: Not to my face, but I am sure people say that all the time.

GS: What do you consider to be your greatest contribution to the tech/blog industry – don’t be modest.
Om: I get to tell the greatest story to be ever told – technology – that’s as good as it gets.

GS: How many hours do you spend online a day?
Om: I am connected all the time, except when I am sleeping.

GS: What is one geeky habit you’re trying to quit?
Om: Instant messaging – I hate the sound iChat makes.

GS: What makes you an eligible geeky bachelor?
Om: I like clothes and the good life as much as I like gadgets. I think I am kind, thoughtful and thanks to my training as a writer, I do have the ability to listen and pay attention.

GS: Describe your ideal date.
Om: I have not been on one yet. If you have expectations, then you are going to be disappointed. If you are disappointed then even the best date can never be an ideal date. That said, I want a date of thousand surprises, little ones, that make every minute worth remembering.

GS: What do you look for in a significant other?
Om: She should take as much interest in men’s shoes as she does in Jimmy Choo’s.

GS: Tell me more about GigaOm!
Om: GigaOM started off as a personal blog five years ago, but since then has become a daily chronicle of the technology industry. I left my job at Business 2.0 in June 2006, raised venture capital and turned it into a little media company. Think of us as rapidly aging former yuppie brother of Sugar Publishing.
My inspiration is curiosity and the desire to learn new things every day. As a kid my grandfather used to warn me to not mistake education for a finite process. My profession is my education, my motivation. My writing is a mix of analysis, sarcasm, humor and plain old news reporting.
