New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Preen

New York fashion week is well under way for Spring 2009 at Bryant Park. Yesterday, British design duo Preen took to the catwalk (although Justin Thornton attended alone whilst his partner is heavily pregnant) to present their latest collection.

Preen have really been a name to watch for recent seasons and they're sure to become a household name very soon. This collection did not disappoint. They continued with the body-con silhouette of previous seasons but added a twist with tulip shape skirts and exposed detailing. Both zips and corsetry were on display creating an almost skeletal style.

The colour palette was mainly muted with a few bright red pieces. Preen played with shape creating volume using pleats, layers and folds whilst still remaining very feminine. Delicate detailing such as punched leather and ruffles added to the playful femininity. Cut out detailing does not simply exaggerate the delicate feeling of the pieces but along with the short hemlines also highlights the sex appeal of the dresses.

Best of 2008: Fabulous Fashion Week Shows

2008 spawned a tremendous flurry of fabulous Fashion Week shows. Let's see, there were New York Fall and Spring shows, Milan Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, and LA Fashion Week. Oh, and don't forget all of the ravishing Resort and Pre-Fall collections. Some of my faves were Proenza Schouler's Fall line, Alexander Wang's Spring offerings, and Balmain's Spring collection in Paris. All different, all divine. Which were your favorites? New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Michael Kors

It's quite grey here in London today so imagine how much Michael Kors has managed to brighten up my day with his Spring 2009 collection. The fun, playful line from Michael Kors was shown yesterday morning as part of New York Fashion Week.

There were plenty of polka dots, stripes and even a bit of tartan in the line which used a bright colour palette of tomato red, canary yellow and cobalt blue. He took inspiration of '50s pin-up girls with high waist lines and wide brim hats. There was also a '90s vibe with midrifts revealed and Pretty Woman style power dresses.

Waists were clinched with solid colour belts and sleeves were cropped.

All these bright colours leave me mourning the end of summer and counting down the days til next Spring!

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Matthew Williamson

British designer Matthew Williamson took his Spring 2009 collection to New York Fashion Week yesterday presenting a line of beautifully structured dresses. Incorporating plenty of colour and spangle, the designer also used the opportunity to launch his accessories line.

Bright floral prints were trimmed with gold to create a boho party style that is sure to go down nicely in Ibiza next summer. His Pucci experience did not go unnoticed with references to the classic Italian style. Tribal detailing gave the floaty dresses more definition and edge.

Waists were clinched in with oversized or skinny belts. Trouser suits were bright yet tailored with 7/8th trousers and broad shouldered jackets. Williamson used brocade prints but updated with shots of metallic or neon pink. He also experimented with patent leather but softened it with soft, floral jackets and blouses.

With the return of Boho/Bopo, expect to see a lot more of Williamson and designs inspired by his work for next Spring.

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Twinkle by Wenlan

The official fourth day of 2009 Spring New York Fashion Week opened (surprisingly on time) with a show from Twinkle by Wenlan. As the sun continues to shine in the American capital of style, Twinkle presented a gorgeous collection of feminine and playful styles similar to styles seen at Chloe. There was a '50's/'60's feel to the collection which compromised mainly of sun dresses and high waisted tailored shorts with the occasional pair of vintage style trousers.

Continuing the trend for body con, Twinkle made the style appeal to "real women" with tulip shaped skirts and fun oversized buttons. Androgynous touches came with suit jacket collars and silk short sleeved tuxedo jacket dresses.

There was a luxe loungewear feel to the latter half of the collection with loose fitting silk jumpsuits. Dressed up, these make the perfect day to partywear for the summer months. Dresses which were fitted at the front with draped panel detailing at the back surely proved to be the most flattering design.

Twinkle designs and creates clothes that women want to wear. They're seemingly simple yet careful pleats and folds reveal the complexities. Such fun wearability leaves me wondering why the label is not bigger in Europe. Watch the show here.

2009 Fall New York Fashion Week: Rebecca Taylor

Remember my quickie where I revealed Rebecca Taylor would delve into the world of Northern European fairytales? Taylor's Fall collection proved not as imaginary as I thought, but still churned out several covetable looks. Dresses and blouses were ultra girlie and diaphanous, while lush pieces like fur vests, structured coats, and studded leather provided contrast. Taylor's signature sweet florals and sassy leopard print were there, as were wearable tapered trousers and webby knits. Simple accessories like a brown skinny belt, blue pumps (worn with socks), or lucite jewelry added polish.

2009 Fall New York Fashion Week: Zac Posen

Posen found solace in a retro, eclectic Fall collection. The '40s were beckoned through square shoulders, skirt suits, tweed, ruffles, and country florals. The palette was totally autumnal: beige, gold, pumpkin, storm gray, but kicked up a notch with scarlet red, silky lilac, and noir. Posen's muse of the season was sultry actress Paz de la Huerta, who served as his date while he took his finale bow. No Posen runway is complete without drama, that he supplied through the 5 Browns, a bro and sis piano group, and metallic, asymmetrical gowns. There was lots of flair going on - jeweled belts, fancy buttons, satin shoes, studded headbands, and cluster earrings. All the more to compliment his screen siren.

2009 Fall New York Fashion Week: Marchesa

I knew Marchesa was going to be special when, as I ran into the entrance to escape the rain, Diane Kruger's and my eyes met. Only for a nanosecond, as she was on her way back into the rain, she slipped on her shades and was off like Cinderella. Many of the billowing gowns and fairytale frocks inside were fit for princess Diane. It was nasty outside, fantasy inside.

I was a Marchesa presentation virgin and I can never go back. Marchesa, always romantic and enchanting, served layers and layers of tulle, silk chiffon, ribbons, embroideries, bows, sequins, and lace. A celestial theme of shooting stars, sparkle, and unicorns felt fantastical. This lilac chiffon-draped dress with embroidered bodice can easily earn Kate Winslet a best dressed nod at the Oscars this weekend. The shoes, by Louboutin, were satin, super high, and sometimes glittered and laced. While Marchesa's gowns tend to steal the spotlight, a couple pant ensembles were sharp; tuxedo trousers paired with romantic ruffles blouses and sculptured jackets. Smitten yet?

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2009: 3.1 Phillip Lim

Phillip Lim's Fall collection was clearly a nod to the groovy '60s. Rocking to Siouxsie and the Banshees in the background, models strutted down the runway wearing impeccably cut coats, tailored pants, and printed dresses. His offerings might appear busy at first glance, but each piece has a defining quality. Lim's use of warm colors and sequin embellishments were unique but not over-the-top. The London vibe was definitely apparent; I can totally see Kate Moss donning this snazzy outfit.

A hefty selection of furs made into vests, chubbys, and even skirts was also key to the designer's offerings. Pairing them with floaty chiffon dresses and tops gave them a hip dimensional and textural quality. All in all, a cool, funkadelic line from Lim.
