The Up in the Air star is a first-time nominee at tonight's ceremony, and she chose a pink-colored Elie Saab gown for the special occasion. AP to Live Stream the Red Carpet on Oscar Sunday

Part of the thrill of waiting for the Oscars to begin is watching the stars make their way down the red carpet. It doesn't matter how much of a geek you are, you have to appreciate those designer gowns! So if you can't be in front of the tube on Oscar Sunday, at least you can get in on the red carpet action thanks to AP. They'll be streaming the stars' arrivals, as well as providing clips of Oscar-worthy performances, photos, and news updates all evening long.

Of course, the girls over at PopSugar, FabSugar, BuzzSugar, BellaSugar, and CelebStyle will be bringing you their own coverage and commentary throughout the red carpet and the show itself, so - I think you've got all your bases covered for the night.

Beauty Byte: Topshop to Launch Beauty Range

Exciting news girls! Topshop has already rocked our world with affordable fast fashion and now it looks set to do the same with makeup. Back in August I told you about this too good to be true buzz, and now it's here! News emerged on Friday in industry bible Women’s Wear Daily, that the chain will be launching two cosmetic ranges from May. Makeup artist Hannah Murray has been consulting the chain and used the products to create the look for the recent Topshop Unique show during London Fashion Week. She said,

"It’s everything you’d want in a range, but in a bold and confident way. It comes from people who are very passionate about fashion."

The full collection will sell in most major Topshop stores and online, and will include makeup, nail polishes and skin tints. There are plans to update the range four to six times a year with new on trend fashion shades. The store also plans to host pod casts of makeup tutorials from Murray. Some of the shades in the collection include The Big Smoke, a fashion-forward (cement coloured nail polish), and lavender coloured eyeliner. Prices will run from roughly £5 for an eye pencil to £13 for skin tint. Stay tuned for updates and product photos soon!

Could Twitter and Foursquare Bump the Price of Home Insurance?

I suppose this makes sense: a UK-based price comparison website predicted that homeowners insurance rates could rise up to ten percent thanks to the popularity and use of location-based services like Twitter and Facebook. I've already suspected that Foursquare could equal overshare thanks to the "check-ins" that let everyone know where you are (or where you're not: home), and insurance companies could be bracing for an increase in break-ins because of it.

Aptly-named website PleaseRobMe is trying to make people aware of how easy it is to determine whether your place is empty by locating and compiling tweets and status updates of people who obviously aren't home, using it as a "slap across the face" to make you more aware of what you tweet. I'm pretty darn careful when it comes to broadcasting where I am, but that's not to say I don't like to brag a bit when I'm at a really great restaurant, or seeing a show I'm excited about. At least the knowledge that my renters insurance rates could spike will make me even more cautious about what I'm declaring to the world! Want some tips on how to keep your location private? Only use location-based services when you need them. Sites like Loopt, Where, and Foursquare may be fun, but letting everyone know your routines could spell bad news for your home security.
Don't post your address anywhere. This should be a given!
Don't tweet about vacations, unless you have a house sitter. Declaring that you'll be in Mexico during Spring Break is only asking for trouble.
Think before you tweet! Something as simple as tweeting about your meal while out to dinner could tip someone off that you're away from home.
Don't friend anyone you don't know on a location-based app or service. Yes, Twitter may be all about the numbers, but do you really want some dude knowing where you are right now cause you friended him on Loopt just to add one to your list? I don't think so.

Spain's Famed El Bulli Restaurant Will Close Permanently

The world can finally stop trying to get into El Bulli. No amount of patience, luck, or connections will get anyone a reservation. Last week, Catalan chef Ferran Adrià confirmed that he would be closing down his Michelin three-starred restaurant for good.

Last month, Adrià made the most elusive restaurant seat infinitely harder to get when he announced he'd be temporarily shuttering El Bulli in 2012, and reopening it in 2014. But in an interview on Friday, the chef said the closure would be permanent because he and his business partner, Juli Soler, had been losing a half million Euros a year on the venture. Rather than funding the restaurant, they will now use that money to establish a new El Bulli academy that will promote contemporary ideas in food.

News of the eatery, which is considered one of, if not the, most avant-garde in the world, will disappoint the 3,000 people on the restaurant waiting list. I'm certain this news has crushed the hope of thousands of culinary cognoscenti - no doubt it has quashed mine. Was El Bulli on your list of places to visit?

Update: Apparently the New York Times misquoted the Spaniard. Earlier today Adria told a Spanish newspaper that the restaurant will close only for the aforementioned two years.

Geeks We Love: Thomas Houston and Leila Brillson From Switched

It's almost Valentine's Day and our Geeks We Love series is going strong! Next up: Thomas Houston and Leila Brillson, Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor (respectively) of Switched, a blog covering technology and its relation to all of our other favorite things - fashion, art, and gadgets. Here's what they have to say about their favorite gadgets, their plans for Valentine's Day, and the blog they're thinking of starting together one day (we think it's a great idea, too!).

We know you from Switched - are there any other projects you’re working on now?
LB: I also write for InterviewMagazine, so I am gearing up for some Fashion Week coverage. When I'm not at Switched, I'm an editor for Rundown, which is this awesome NY-oriented men's site that kind of covers happenings in the city. Lastly, but certainly not leastly, I have my own often-neglected blog, Battledroid, which is kind of a fusion of geekery and fashion, my two favorite things.
TH: Switched has kept me extremely busy lately, but I've got some new blog ideas for 2010.
LB: Thomas has been threatening to get us to start a site that's a cross between FU Penguin and the Sartorialist for New York City pets. I think its a grand idea.

Do you think technology is becoming too much of a distraction in our daily lives? Alternatively, how do you use tech to your advantage?

LB: I think anything that makes life easier can be a distraction in our daily lives. However, tech, you know, makes life easier in a lot of ways. Technology is a double-edged sword: total interconnectedness leads to collaboration and an easy way to share info, but it also leads to confusion and being overwhelmed by constant status updates/news feeds/product launches. Which may explain Thomas's fear of Facebook.
TH: It's not a fear so much as a self-imposed protection mechanism protecting me against the flood of things old friends and acquaintances post. Technology can be an enormous distraction and staying focused is increasingly difficult in the face of the growing torrent of news, e-mails, IMs, and everything else. That said, it's really exciting to be covering the cutting edge of tech, art, and design, and it enables us to have a team working together around the world.

What gadget can’t you live without? Why?

LB: My iPod, because living in New York City, if I had to listen to all the street craziness all the time, I would go bonkers. Laptop and BlackBerry are kind of a given too: I guess it's the modern holy trinity.
TH: Though smartphones are undeniably useful for managing things on the go, the title of "gadget I can't live without" goes to my MacBook Pro. It's essential for everything from blogging and editing to staying in touch with family and friends and designing.

What are some of your favorite - and least favorite - tech trends?

TH: The growth of the cloud for data storage has been enormously useful (though Spotify still hasn't come to the states). Perhaps not a trend, but I'd like to see more discussion of technology's impact on everyday life, and how to deal with the explosion of data that connected mobile devices enables.
LB: I don't own, or understand, e-readers. I love books too much, and I came from magazines, so a part of me is very loyal to the paper. However, I think that once higher resolution readers are adopted and more affordable, I could understand receiving my morning paper in its e-form. But I will never pass up the opportunity to flip through a glossy mag. I'm also super excited about these random, self-aware interactions technology has afforded global citizens, like Chatroulette and flash mobs. We are interacting with each other more than ever, and some of us have come up with some rather clever stunts and projects that are based on democratic ideas like crowd-sourcing or group participation.

Do you have a favorite Valentine’s Day memory? Are you celebrating this year?
LB: Hands down, my sophomore year of high school when I came home on the night of V-Day and my mom had festively decorated and cleaned my disaster area of a room (an unlikely occurrence). I actually have a box from her, she's been my best Valentine. This holiday is incredibly jinxed for me, so I'm keeping my plans under wraps so I don't jinx myself. But I assure you, they are cute.
TH: A permanently jinxed holiday here, but I still somehow haven't seen Avatar, though that probably isn't helping things.
LB: Ladies? Anyone want to see Avatar?

Which is your favorite way to communicate - talk, text or tweet?
LB: Totally talking. Face time with someone will never devalue. However, I do enjoy a finely crafted tweet, now and again.
TH: Definitely talking. Tweets and texts can be fun, but there's nothing like talking face to face.

New York just got slammed by a huge blizzard. What did you do on your snow day (besides this interview)?
LB: I, for one, have a paranoid fear my carbon monoxide detector is on the fritz, so I aired out my apartment and finally got around to building a desk to keep myself warm. It's gorgeous here . . . as long as I only have to watch it from my window.
TH: There's one thing that's a pain about technology! Unless power goes out, "snow days" are a quaint memory from the 20th century.

Tria Take 2: A Major Pitfall

This Bella is kind of a shaving fanatic, so while I'm extremely conscious of my water consumption, I'm more of an unwilling lingerer when it comes to showering, all thanks to my long-term relationship with Gilette's Venus. Enter, the new and improved Tria. (Which, in full disclosure, was sent to us by the folks behind the brand.) It's been about a month since I made the commitment to utilize this hair removal device, promising myself I'd make baby steps to dedicate the time to zap hair from my bikini and underarm areas only.
