Most people think that extensions are heavy and flow all the way down your back, but that's not always the case. Take Nicole Richie, for example. Some of you already guessed from my quiz about celebrity hair extensions that she even wears them in her bangs!

Sheila Stotts, who has been styling Nicole's hair for five years, adds piecey extensions all over her head and to her bangs to create that amazing sweep she's known for.

Since Nicole's hair is pretty thin, she needs extra volume. Sheila uses a razor to cut the ends and then shapes the hair with scissors. She also colors her hair a soft shade of honey-blond and works in random toffee low-lights for depth and edginess.

Nicole Richie's Hair-Styling Tip: Does It Work?

The new issue of Glamour has a lovely photo shoot with Nicole Richie, but what really caught my eye was a quote from Nicole: "The best tip I ever got from a hair pro was to curl my hair with a flat iron." Say what? On second thought, I felt like I may have witnessed this backstage during Fashion Week, but not in the hands of a mere hair novice like myself.

So I fired up a Linea Pro C2 flat iron, which is about as narrow as the barrel of the curling iron I use, determined to end up with elusive Nicole Richie-looking hair. The first thing I noticed was that having to continue to clamp the flat iron while twisting my hair around it was harder than expected. And the resulting curls can only be described as trapezoid-y, with my strands bent into some very unnaturally sharp angles. While I can see that a stylist trying this in one fluid movement (think of curling ribbon) could work, I just ended up wishing my flat iron was round and had a clamp . . . uh, like a curling iron. Have any of you made this work?

How-To: Nicole Richie's Laid Back and Natural Braid

At the 18th Annual Environmental Media Awards, Nicole Richie was all laid back and natural with her delicate French braids wrapped like a headband. If you're feeling this sexy, bohemian style, I've got the how-to below. And for another hippie-esque take on the look, try out Sarah Michelle Gellar's more twisty, less braidy updo from earlier this year.

Slightly dirty hair is easier to work with than freshly washed hair, but you can create "day-old" hair with a texturizing product. Lightly sprinkle Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion ($23) on the roots, working through to ends.
Next, part hair down the middle, stopping right before the crown area.
On one side, start French braiding. Gather pieces of hair as you move down, wrapping around to the opposite side, stopping before the ear. Hold together with a clear elastic band ($3.99). Don't worry about loose ends. Leave them for later.
On the other side, French braid - still gathering pieces as you go down, wrapping around to the opposite side like before. Focus on hiding the clear elastic band from your previous braid by tucking and intertwining loose ends from this braid. Use bobby pins to secure. The whole look is earthy, so be creative. The more you weave pieces from each braid together, the more organic and "flowy" it will feel.

While we're still seeing everything from satiny flowers to wispy feathers (hello, Gossip Girl), metallic headbands are also ruling the fashion scene. Although we haven't seen Mischa Barton wearing her signature style as of late, she does carry a line of headbands in collaboration with accessories designer Stacey Lapidus. As for the hair accessories business, Mischa's not alone. Nicole Richie's House of Harlow 1960 collection includes metallic headpieces, which she told Pop were her favorite of the line. Then there's Paris Hilton. She has her perfume line to keep her busy, but that doesn't stop her sporting this Grecian-like adornment in sparkly silver tones. Earlier this month I spotted Nicole Richie and Whitney Port both donning a modern, slightly messy take on a half-up, half-down hairdo that Mandy Moore wore a while back. It's a casual, chic, and stylish way to keep your hair out of your eyes. This laid-back look is easy to achieve. Just follow my three simple steps below:

STEP 1: Part your hair in the center.
STEP 2: Pull back the top crown of your hair (above your temples where your bangs are/would be) and twist hair away from your face. You can also braid it or brush it back as additional styling options.
STEP 3: Secure hair on the sides with small barrettes, elastics or bobby pins, or pull both sections of hair to the back and secure together. See? Easy.

Love It or Hate It? Nicole Richie's Bun and Braids

Nicole Richie arrived at the A Time For Heroes Celebrity Carnival, an event that supports pediatric AIDS, with her hair styled in a center part, milkmaid braids on the sides, and everything secured in a low, messy bun in the back. I wonder if she's mastered the art of braiding herself by now? I'd like to think so, but something tells me that she's probably had help creating this intricate hairstyle.

I'm still not sure how I feel about this look. In the hot summer sun, it's a great way to stay cool and look chic, but braids seem young and unkempt to me. What are your thoughts - do you like or dislike Nicole's bun and braids?

How To: Perfect Plaits for Jennifer Ellison

After designers showcased multiple braids this season, including the skinny pirate plaits at Jean Paul Gaultier, the braid could well be crowned the hair trend of the 2008. While most of you love this look it has become a touch ubiquitous in celebrity world, with both Nicole Richie and Jessica Simpson making the trend their own, with single, double and triple braid styles.

Last night, at Dolce in London, Jennifer Ellison followed suit with a Grecian, milkmaid braid wrapped around the crown of her head, as well as a fluffed-up, pulled-back up do. Perhaps it was because the colours didn't seem to match, but there was something odd looking about this style that made me think it was a hair piece.

Admittedly, plaits can be tricky as you're walking the line between Little House on the Prairie and Grecian goddess. For a few easy tips, read more.

For a quick up do, follow Nicole Richie's lead with a braids and bun style. Simply take two sections at the front and plait so you have two long plaits falling on either side of your face. Then scrape hair back into a messy bun and pin. It's supposed to look slightly unkempt so don't be too neat.
For a flattering milkmaid braid, either use a hair piece that matches your hair colour correctly, like Sienna Miller, or wrap around the centre of your head, instead of the front, like Salma Hayek.
Use your centre parting as a guideline, then create two braided plaits and secure each braid with a small hair band. Aim to cross the plaits over the top of your head and secure each side with bobby pins.
For an easy, pirate plait look, just take random sections of hair and plait. Take from the underneath of your hair to make for an unstructured look.

We've certainly seem some interesting head gear recently, so it doesn't surprise me that fashionista Nicole Richie arrived at the Jenni Kayne and Andy Lecompte Salon Party in Los Angeles dressed from head to toe like a Greek goddess. I think this Alice band/hair piece is quite unique, stylish and elegant. She's managed to give it a slightly bohemian feel pairing it with flowy attire and unkempt waves.
