Nigella's Down Under Ahead of Next Week's Nibbies

Lovely Nigella Lawson was Down Under yesterday, signing copies of her book Nigella Express at the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney. I'm a big fan of the celebrity chef, and it seems that a lot of you love the domestic goddess too. We'll see how popular her book is when the winners of the Galaxy British Book Awards are announced next week, as Nigella Express is up for the Play.com Popular Non-Fiction Award.

Katie Price is also one of the nominees - she's in the running for the WH Smith Children's Book of the Year in the Developing category with My Pony Care - and Russell Brand's My Booky Wook is nominated for the Tesco Biography of the Year. The winners will be announced at the "Nibbies" awards ceremony hosted by Richard & Judy on 9th April, which will be televised on Channel 4 on Sunday 13th April.

Fab Blab: Nigella Lawson on Fur

TV chef and food write Nigella Lawson caused controversy last night when she announced that she'd happily wear fur if she killed the animal herself. Appearing on The One Show on BBC1 Nigella was asked if she thought the fashion industry should outlaw fur. She commented,

"Going into a shop and buying a fur coat would be an act of weakness. But if I could go into the woods and kill a bear myself I would wear it proudly as a trophy.’’

People for the Ethical Treatement of Animals (PETA) were unsurprisingly unimpressed by her views and commented Nigella’s comments were ill-judged and show her in an unattractive light.’’

Battle of the Quick Chocolate Mousse: Nigella vs. Giada

Yesterday, while visiting my old friend The Food Network, I watched two episodes - one Nigella and another Giada - in which recipes for a super-simple chocolate mousse-like dessert were made. Both looked divinely delicious and uncomplicated to make - way easier than the chocolate mousse recipe I wrote about awhile ago. I decided to make them both and have a taste test to see which recipe was better. Nigella's recipe included mini marshmallows and no eggs. Giada's involved egg whites and the interesting technique of blitzing the chocolate in a blender. Both used chocolate chips instead of chocolate bars to save time. Nigella's won in taste - rich, dense, and fudgey - while everyone preferred the texture of Giada's which was creamy and super smooth.

Instant Chocolate Mousse
From Nigella Lawson

3 cups mini marshmallows
1/2 stick unsalted butter, softened
9 ounces best quality semisweet chocolate, chopped into small pieces
1/4 cup hot water from a recently boiled kettle
1 cup heavy cream
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Put the marshmallows, butter, chocolate, and water in a heavy-based saucepan.
Put the saucepan on the stove, over heat, though keep it fairly gentle, to melt, stirring every now and again. Remove from the heat.
Meanwhile whip the cream with the vanilla until thick and then fold into the cooling chocolate mixture until you have a smooth, cohesive mixture.
Pour or scrape into 4 or 6 glasses or small dishes and chill until you want to eat. The sooner the better!

Serves 4-6.

Espresso Chocolate Mousse
From Giada De Laurentiis

1/2 cup whole milk
3 tbsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. instant espresso powder
1 cup bittersweet chocolate chips
3 large egg whites

In a small saucepan over medium heat stir together the milk with the sugar and the espresso powder until the milk is hot, but not boiling, and the sugar is dissolved.
Place the chocolate chips in a blender.
*Pour the hot milk over the chips. Run the blender on high until combined, a few seconds.
Add the egg whites and run the blender on high until light, about 1 minute.
Transfer the mousse to 4 small serving cups. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator until firm, about 3 hours.

Serves 4,

* When blending hot liquids: Remove liquid from the heat and allow to cool for at least 5 minutes. Transfer liquid to a blender or food processor and fill it no more than halfway. If using a blender, release one corner of the lid. This prevents the vacuum effect that creates heat explosions. Place a towel over the top of the machine, pulse a few times then process on high speed until smooth.

Nigella Lawson Dishes Out Tough Love

While the chatty chef serves up generous portions on TV, off screen Nigella Lawson has been getting into tiffs with her husband about preferring not to leave the fruits of their labor to the fruits of their loins. Nigella has made it well known that she plans on leaving none (zip!) of their £100 million estate to their children. Seems like she may be taking Melinda Gates' take on inheritance to the next level?

Nigella's disagreeing husband is marketing guru Charles Saatchi and he feels exactly opposite about leaving their kids in privileged financial care. Nigella was straightforward when asked what she hoped her children would learn from her. To see what she had to say please read more

To know that I am working and that you have to work in order to earn money. I am determined that my children should have no financial security. It ruins people not having to earn money. I argue with my husband Charles, because he believes that you should be able to leave money to your children. I think we'll have to agree to disagree.

You can agree to disagree with your husband on whether or not Gossip Girl trumps a basketball game for coveted screen time, but not on a more meaningful issue like this! There has to be some kind of compromise. She hasn't suggested where their amassed wealth would be directed instead of their offspring's bank accounts. Who Said It, Martha or Nigella?

The blogosphere is running amok with a story about a "feud" that is brewing between Martha Stewart and Nigella Lawson. Martha supposedly referred to Nigella as, "what's her name who married the Saatchi." Which caused Nigella to respond that Martha has "insecurities."

I'm sure that this so-called rivalry is hyped to sell papers, but it definitely got me thinking about the two domestic divas. US-Bound BMI Winner Lily Helps Nigella Launch Saatchi

Nigella Lawson looked gorgeous at her husband's Saatchi Gallery Launch Party last night on the King's Road, and a host of celebrities braved the weather to welcome the artworks to their new home in Chelsea. Mariella Frostrup wrapped up in an on-trend chunky knit, while still sexy Stephen Dorff continued his leather jacket and plaid shirt combo. Lily Allen went monochrome in fashion and beauty: BellaUK wants to know do you love or hate her look? The singer had a successful evening, also picking up her gong for "Smile" at the BMI Awards. She also revealed she's finally been allowed a US work visa, after being banned following a scuffle with a photographer.

Lovely Ladies Celebrate The Lavender Trust

A load of lovely ladies attended the 10th Anniversary Party of The Lavender Trust at Breast Cancer Care at Claridge's in London last night. Emma Thompson, Nigella Lawson and Thandie Newton smiled for pictures alongside Annie Lennox, who sang at the Lavender Trust's launch party back in 1998 and performed again at last night's anniversary party. Lisa Snowdon looked great in her pretty dress, as did Claudia Winkleman who went for big blue circles like Sophie Ellis-Bextor had the night before. Model Erin O'Connor wore a black Sofia Strazzanti dress: do you love it or hate it? It's great to see such a wonderful bunch of celebs supporting such a great cause.

Nigella Lawson Not So Tough After All

Last week I told you about reports that the wealthy chef's children wouldn't be inheriting her money for the sake of them understanding the value of a euro. She issued this statement denying the rumors on her website on Friday.

You might have noticed in the press that I have (apparently) cut my children out of my will, cruel mother that I am. Of course I have no intention of leaving my children destitute and starving - rather, this is a story that came from a comment I made about my belief that you have to work in order to learn the value of money.

I have always said of my children that once they have finished university or training, whatever education they choose, they have to support themselves through work, as I did, but I have never discussed the details of my will with anyone. The story that has been circulating is not a true reflection of my intentions and, although I'd normally ignore it, I want to set the record, not least to spare my children continuing embarrassment.

That sounds more like a mom looking out for her children's well-being, compared to her earlier statement, which many of you thought seemed a bit harsh.
