Every fashionista should be trying to incorporate some form of organic fashion into their lives. Whether it's switching from plastic to cloth grocery bags, embracing everything eco-fashion-friendly, or simply keeping abreast of the changing fashion terrain, I think we can all agree going organic is a healthy direction for fashion folk alike. An easy foray into this evolution is investing in organic denim. I love to live in jeans. You know what I love even more? Living in jeans made from organic cotton.

2010 Spring: Calvin Klein, CK Jeans, and CK Underwear

Clean. Precise. Minimal. Three terms Calvin Klein wants you to use when describing its Spring '10 collection. Staying true to the house's less-is-more aesthetic, Francisco Costa has delivered a line of basics with a sexy utilitarian nature. You'll find organic fabrics and most colors of the rainbow: sand, white, and khaki as staples, canary, melon, poppy, fuchsia, turquoise, and cobalt as accents. Drawstring cargos, denim vests, fitted blazers, parkas, denim judo pants, and shirt dresses are all solid. But one print piece stands out as the cool black sheep: a black-and-white, tie-dye dress that's feminine and bold.

Swimsuits are also part of the Spring family - a two-piece in warm gray and a one piece in solid gray or gray Bengal print. The handbags are equally minimal; hobos, totes, and rounded clutches are smooth and unstructured, with gold and silver hardware. Wooden-stacked heels and flat sandals are au naturel and sporty.

Casa Verde: Finest Laundry Powder

I've switched over from the grocery store usuals like Tide and All to eco-friendly laundry detergents from brands like Method, Clorox Green Works, and Seventh Generation, and I've shown you how to make your own eco-friendly detergent. But eco detergents are nothing new. The Laundry, a Milwaukee-based laundering service, has been making its Finest Laundry Powder ($24.95), an organic, biodegradable, additive-free, dye-free, and bleach-free detergent, for over 50 years. The powder works with all washing machines, and with everything from fine knits to towels to tough denim. Beyond that, its packaging is environmentally conscious as well: order its sturdy reusable container with scoop once, and then follow up with plastic bag refills. Oh, and did I mention the packaging is gorgeous?

Does This Display Want You to Be Skinny?

About Face is a fantastic organization for girls - and anyone else, for that matter. The San Francisco-based nonprofit works to help young women rise above media messages (advertisements, music videos, magazine spreads) that perpetuate an overly thin, unattainably "perfect" ideal. Unfortunately, they have their work cut out for them, as there aren't too many media sources that promote a more true-to-life vision of womanhood.

About Face has its own blog, and one recent post takes Macy's to task for a denim display that features skinny jeans. The writer says:

I have become accustomed to the waif-thin mannequins sporting bodies that the majority of human beings cannot attain without the help of anorexia. But to focus [the] display on the word “skinny” is taking the assault on women’s image to a new level. . . . I know, I get it: Skinny jeans, hence the S-K-I-N-N-Y. I get it. But with the addition of the word “skinny” to the size 2 mannequins, they are communicating to the “non-skinnies” that these pants are not for them. Mainstream advertising is once again reminding the world that to be skinny is glamorous and should be what everyone strives for.

The writer goes on to say that she'd rather "have the body of a woman, not that of a pre-pubescent boy." While I see what she's saying, I don't look at this display and think, "Ah, the fat-hating patriarchy is at it again." Instead, I'm amazed that the skinny-jean silhouette is still around, given its ability to make almost everyone look like a bizarre carrot-sausage hybrid of denim disaster. I'm curious about your thoughts on this display. Do you think it sends a message about skinny bodies along with clothes, or is it just trying to sell us some questionably flattering jeans?

On Our Radar: J Brand Goes Green

J Brand, the wildly popular denim line, is the latest to jump on the green wandbagon. The company, headed by denim manufacturer Jeff Rudes and stylist Susie Crippen, is planning on releasing J Brand Green Label, an organic collection of stylish denim. As of Spring '08, you'll be able to get your tush in eco-chic J Brand jeans. In the meantime, Jeff and Susie provide some other ways to be friendly to the environment.

Fashion Week: Krawlers

Organic was all the rage at the Children’s Club show. Clothing companies finally understand that moms want what's best for their children, but can't always afford to pay a premium for it.

Krawlers, a Brooklyn-based company that designs children’s clothing that's easy to put on squirmy tots is launching an organic line. Sold on the company’s website, Buy Buy Baby and Babies R Us stores, Krawlers' first organic line will hit the market in mid February and will feature some of the company’s best-known features - well-placed snaps, wide openings, and zippers lined for the inside to help protect babies from pinching.

The designs are hip, with recycling messages on T-shirts and embroidered trees on the denim jackets. They will also continue to design their pants with knee quilting to protect babies' knees as they learn to crawl (see the leggings at right). Priced from $15-$33, the Krawlers line will help many moms join the organic movement without breaking the bank.

Designer Spotlight: Del Forte Denim

How many times have you wanted to have your cake and eat it too? Tierra Del Forte didn't think girls should have to choose between the environment and looking good in their trusty jeans.

After visiting garment factories and seeing what a destructive impact the fashion industry has on the environment, Tierra founded her line Del Forte Denim in 2005, eager to produce denim that is both distinctive in design and ethically made. Mission accomplished: Del Forte jeans are made of 100 percent organic cotton in LA, and a portion of their proceeds goes to The Sustainable Cotton Project.
