500 Days of Summer doesn't make its debut in theaters until July 17, but I've already got an eye on the sets. Here, Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt stand on a rooftop in full Summer style. Of course, the pair look quite dapper in a beautifully patterned sundress and a sharp suit, but it's the paper lanterns that complete the scene. The concrete wall looks a little gritty but the lanterns instantly give the space early evening elegance. Paper lanterns are very inexpensive and easy to hang on a string of outdoor lights. Paper lanterns are the epitome of cheap/chic. A basic lantern will cost you under 10 bucks, while something a little more high-tech like these solar powered ones go for $29. They're totally affordable but also timeless and high in style. You really can't go wrong with paper lanterns, regardless of your budget. Do you own any?

Love It or Hate It? Overbed Paper Lanterns

AT:SF recently cheered the use of Ikea Regolit paper lanterns over a bed. I also spotted a similar paper lantern on Domino used in the same way. While it may be picturesque and wonderfully styled, personally, I think it might interrupt any movement that's not, uh, horizontal. What do you think?

One of the most economical and pretty ways that you can decorate your outside space is with colorful paper lanterns. Not only are they inexpensive, they also look great during every hour of your party. If you choose brightly colored lanterns, like the ones shown here, they'll create a huge color splash during the day. At night, once the lanterns are lit, they'll provide a more muted, yet still colorful, addition to the party decorations. I love the festive look of hanging lanterns at garden parties, and just a few strings of paper lanterns can take a party's look from boring to brilliant. Come Party With Me: My Birthday Party - The Look

I'm hosting my 28th birthday party in my grandfather's backyard. Since the yard is large, complete with pool, patio, gazebo, putting green, and grass, I'll be setting up each part of the dinner in a different area. The cocktail hour begins in the patio. Neat rows of glasses filled with campari cocktails and platters of bruschetta will await the arrival of the guests.

The long rectangular dinner table will be set up on the grass, to the left of the pool. A simple white tablecloth will cover it, along with printed paper placemats, white dinner plates, blue cloth napkins, menu stands that act as placecards, and wine glasses. Candles in mason jars and low vases filled with white flowers will run down the middle of the table.

I'll hang paper lanterns and white lights from the trees, line the fence with tiki torches, and place a fountain in the pool. After dinner we'll move to other side of the yard for dessert, digestifs, and a putting contest!

Non Voyage: Leave Your Heart in San Francisco

You don't have to travel to San Francisco to leave your heart there. As we continue our week of metropolitan non voyages, we head to the city by the Bay where the kids can get in on the West Coast fun.

Famous for being just seven by seven square miles, San Francisco is completely walkable. Have your children slip into some comfortable shoes and go for a scenic jaunt.
Fisherman's Wharf is a circus unto itself with all of kinds of activities. It's well known for its fresh seafood and sourdough French bread, so see if your local fishmonger has any Dungeness crabs and prep a delicious hands-on meal with the kids.
Lombard Street is incredibly crooked, and children love taking the slow ride down the residential street. Recreate a pint sized experience with a crazy course on your driveway for your tots to man their trikes through.
Cable cars are moving landmarks that attract tourists and locals alike. Though a ride on the trolleys may be hard to simulate, craft some models out of shoe boxes and other materials.
The city is richly diverse and has many cultural neighborhoods including Chinatown, which is the largest one outside of Asia. Set up your own little area with beautiful fans and lanterns and introduce lil ones to dishes like chicken lo mein or pineapple fried rice. Don't forget to have the kids use chopsticks!
During the Summer of Love, hippies with flowers in their hair migrated to Haight Street. Celebrate peace, love and happiness by tie dying colorful tees with your tots.
From the beat poets to political activists, San Francisco is a place of progressive thought where people are celebrated and appreciated for their unique opinions. Have your children put pen to paper and jot down their ideas in a poem.

Nice and New: India Rose Fabric Lanterns

Don't get me wrong: white paper lanterns will never lose their cool in my book. But that doesn't mean I don't crave a little color and pattern every now and then, too. Today I have a soft spot for the new India Rose Fabric Lanterns ($35-43), which are made of 100 percent cotton with a batik polka dot pattern in brown, green, and sky blue. I love this view of them hanging from the trees, but they'd also look très casual chic used indoors. Have you checked out India Rose before? It's my go-to place for feminine textiles, and actually where I got my shower curtain!

Love It or Hate It? Easy Lamp

No one likes to see an ugly bare bulb hanging from a ceiling outlet, so Droog Design suggests using the Easy Lamp ($121). Made of translucent polypropylene, the cover simply pops on a hanging bulb. Is it just me, or can you get nearly the same effect with a $5 white paper lantern?
