Private Practice Rundown: Episode 14, "Second Chances"

He was sorta there last week, but on this week's episode of Private Practice, Addison's petulant older brother Archer is really back! He saddles up alongside "Addie" on a tough medical procedure by day, then saddles up on top of Naomi by night. Heh. Meanwhile Violet is still pregnant, unsure of herself as future mother, and really unsure of whether the possible fathers will want a role in the child's life. That's OK, though, because this kid will be raised by Cooper, right? Well, that's what I'm hoping. Ready to chat about it? Just read more.

Right off the bat, Naomi needs someone to talk to about having sex with her best friend's brother, so since her best friend is not an option, she goes to her ex-husband. They're pretty cute at first as "friends" giving each other dating advice. But then things get a little . . .weird. I mean, Sam's girlfriend undresses for him while he's giving sex advice to Naomi and calling her an African queen on the phone. And when Naomi giddly asks if Sonya's naked, I was officially weirded out.

Speaking of being weirded out: How do you all feel about a woman giving birth to her own grandchild? I know the whole point of this show is to always have someone play devil's advocate (it's amazing how you can have a group of people who get along so well fall on the exact opposite side of any given issue every. single. time.), but really? Is there another side to giving birth to your own grandchild, or is that just strange? I know Naomi's goal is to get everyone who walks into her office preggers, but sheesh, lady, draw a line. Shouldn't they have called in some sort of ethics specialist or something? Maybe I'm being too judgmental. The whole plot is there to help Violet sort through her fears about being a mother anyway.

For some reason, Cooper is still hellbent on making his relationship (if you can even call it that) with Charlotte work. He insists they should be able to work this current conflict out by talking, which forces her to lay out how humiliating it is to ask someone to marry you and for that person to say no. I know Charlotte is mostly mean to Coop, but this time around I felt like saying, "Dude. Give her space. She's embarrassed." But Cooper doesn't give her space and even delivers a big speech about how they're "so not a cute couple" but a couple nevertheless and he'll never give up on her. Never! But then he does! Because Violet, who tries to assess the level of enthusiasm for children in both potential baby daddies by setting up manipulative hypothetical situations in casual conversation (Sheldon: "I'm not really a kid person"), says she's falling apart. (She seems fine to me . . . ) Anyway. Charlotte takes Cooper's speech to heart and declares she wants to move in with him and then he disses her again! D'oh!

A few more thoughts:

One more thing about the grandmother/grandchild thing: The grandmother wants a re-do at motherhood since her first kid deeply resented her. I kept thinking about how much I might resent my mom if she revealed to me she was my grandmother. It just seems like she's guaranteeing herself another kid who'll have issues.

Violet's little passive-aggressive mind games on both Sheldon and Pete weren't exactly fair. As a therapist, shouldn't she have known better?

I laughed when Addison says, "Is that what he's calling himself?" when Naomi tells her about Archer being a "good-time guy."

Sam and Naomi's daughter seems to conveniently be at sleepovers a lot. Her parents are getting away with a lot of sex these days.

So, Wyatt's just gone, I guess. He does have his own show to tend to. Still, that was abrupt.

What did you all think of this episode?

Photos copyright 2009 ABC, Inc.

Private Practice Rundown: Episode 13, "Nothing to Fear"

I'm feeling a little emotional today. Why, you ask? Well, after sitting through Ugly Betty (full recap coming later - but it was heavy), Grey's Anatomy, and Private Practice last night, I'm feeling a little emotionally battered. I mean, right after Grey's put me through the wringer, Private Practice launched straight into an episode involving only things that make me cry including: watching someone die alone of cancer, watching someone talk about how alone we all are and how scary dying is, a wedding, a mom giving up her baby, someone talking about her dad not being able to walk her down the aisle because he's dead, and a breakup. Jeez, ABC primetime writers! Are you trying to destroy my soul?

Anyway, a lot went down on Private Practice, so to chat, just read more.

There's a very stressful opening this week with SWAT guy grilling Addison about where she went that one night last week and what happened. We all know that she went into Wyatt's office and made out with him - but was there more? Well, that's confusing, because in this week's flashback we see them kissing and then see Wyatt say, "Take off your clothes." This leads me to believe they got naked, which leads me to believe they had sex, but Addison denies this to her BFF Naomi. Is she lying? Hmmm. Addison gets angrier and angrier at SWAT guy's questions and right when he says he trusts her after all, she hilariously responds with something like, "Well I sort of did make out with someone." So it's all over for Addison and SWAT guy.

Meanwhile, the young pregnant woman whom Dell matched with adoptive parents is in labor. Complications arise, and she's rushed to the hospital, where decisions on the baby's health need to be made. The adoptive parents totally freeze up and literally just run away, which makes everyone mad, especially Dell. Once the woman makes the call herself, she feels more attached to her baby and wants to maybe keep it. Dell gets super righteous and emotional (as usual) and is pretty mean to the adoptive parents. Thankfully, Naomi, who's actually a grownup, talks sense into everyone, which leads to Buzz Waterworks Moment No. 1 while the birth mother tells the new adoptive mother to take care of her baby.

Meanwhile, Violet is still with Sheldon but falls into hysterical fits of laughter because she's pregnant. And she doesn't know who the father is! Hilarious! She does a really good job helping her agoraphobic patient, though, and gets the nice lady to her daughter's wedding (Buzz Waterworks Moment No. 2!). Then there's poor, lovable Cooper caught up with a grieving Charlotte. Suddenly she really wants to marry Cooper. In Vegas. He's so freaking adorable when he tells her that he doesn't want her sad when she walks down the aisle, he wants her beaming. Charlotte, of course, is totally peeved at him for rejecting her. These two are a little too off-and-on for me to believe they could actually commit. What do you think?

A few more thoughts:

Ack! Addison shoves the baby back into the lady! We had to watch it! Blood-curdling screams!

Pete and Sam's dying patient is tragic but sweet. I love this line as he sticks the morphine into himself: "Better than a petite syrah, my dear. L'Chaim."

I really thought Addison was about to walk in on Naomi doing it with Wyatt, which was making me a little sad but then it was Addison's brother - who is back and apparently working for Charlotte's practice too.

Addison's line to SWAT guy about how the kiss was the only hour her stomach didn't have knots was way harsh. She could have said, "I'm so sorry. I should have talked to you first about how unhappy I've been." But I guess she's only human (if a little mean).

What did you guys think of this episode? Sound off below!

Private Practice Rundown: Episode 12, "Homeward Bound"

Man, the women of Private Practice are pretty screwed up emotionally. They all admit it this week, too, which is heartbreaking and kind of interesting when you think about it. I feel like I need to pause and give thanks for the over-30 female-driven storylines. Also heartbreaking? Charlotte King crying on Cooper's lap. Aw! I'm officially rooting for these two now, even though I'm very, very frightened of that woman. Let's chat about it, just read more.

It wasn't just the doctors who had me glued to my TV set this week - it was also the patients. Raise your hand if you knew the mother was gay? I thought maybe she had another lover or something, but as soon as the other lady showed up I figured it out. The poor son! Do you think he's too hard on his mom or is that a totally natural reaction? And then there's that crazy decision that father has to make! I won't even get into the medical explanation of what's going on (I had to rewind four times to try to understand). But the choice he has to make is excruciating, and the way it all plays out pulled at my heartstrings but also struck me as implausible. I mean, if you decide you are going to give up your son so you can be with your daughter, wouldn't you take a second to call an aunt or someone? Instead of handing him to a random doctor? Maybe call up a lawyer and figure out some custody stuff? I was confused.

Meanwhile, Sheldon, who previously suffered from impotence, is now showing up to Violet's doorstep declaring "It's up Violet! Full mast!" I immediately thought Violet would turn him away with an "Um, no thanks. I'm sleeping with a hot guy named Pete" - but no! She starts sleeping with both guys and tells Addison and Naomi she can't choose between Pete's heat and Sheldon's comfort. You guys. I am not a fan of Sheldon's. I get the heebie-jeebies just thinking about him showing up on doorsteps with erections.

In Addison-land, she and SWAT guy are having horribly icky fights. She's all, "A child is dying and you want to chill out!" and he yells back that she's no fun. Why'd they bring him back? Now it's basically cheating when she makes out with Wyatt. And Addison is already branded a cheater from her Grey's Anatomy days. But yay for making out with Wyatt - could he be cuter? He looks like future 40-something Will from Privileged.

A few more thoughts:

I think it's funny when Cooper thinks "Big Daddy" is the username of someone Charlotte's getting it on with online. But no. It's her father. Who is dying.

And wait a minute. . . Violet has sex with two guys at the same time for the first time in her life and she's stricken with some terrible peeing condition? I mean, Pete is the sluttiest person on the show and theoretically could have gotten seven STDs by now, but as soon as Violet is having all this sex, the writers make her come down with a physical ailment and struggle with the double standards of female and male sexuality? Seems like overkill. And what a loopy mixed message that is.

I really felt for Naomi. I would be super sad to see a younger lady hanging out with my ex and my daughter. But Sonya turns out to be cool so it's all good.

Another icky line from Sheldon, which is his version of foreplay: "From a psycho-physiological standpoint, this is remarkable." Wow, could he be less sexy?

Ha! Cooper's advice to Violet about sex is hysterical. Cooper: "You're a red-blooded American - sex is your birthright." Violet: "I will exercise my right!"

What did you think of this episode?

Photos copyright 2008 ABC, Inc.

Private Practice Rundown: Episode 11, "Contamination"

Private Practice is back and is ripped from the headlines! You've almost certainly noticed the heated debate taking place over the correlation between the immunization of children and autism (both sides have celebrity voices attached to their cause). It's highly controversial, super emotional, and extremely personal to moms especially, which means it was probably just begging for another preachy prime time drama to wade into the fray.

Anyway, despite some clunky, public service-y lines related to the autism (Sam: "CDC is clear, vaccination saves lives. End of story."), this episode on the whole is pretty absorbing and entertaining especially because everyone appears to be friends again. Or, in the case of Violet and Pete, super duper close sexy-time friends. Ready to chat about it? Just read more.

So! The episode opens with-what else?-sex! Between Violet and Pete. This has got to be some kind of record, right? How many episodes in a row can the opening scene involve sex? I'm not necessarily complaining - it's just a little desperate, no? Regardless, Violet and Pete are still going at it and decide to keep things loose without much commitment. Except once Cooper takes Violet seriously that she is, in fact, sleeping with Pete, he freaks out ("Pete is the anti-relationship! Pete is the ruiner of relationships!") and blabs this to the whole office. Everyone stops by to tell Violet what a cad Pete is and to be careful, just as Pete (with some input from Addison) decides that he might want to try the whole relationship thing out with her. Violet pretty much disses him - and wisely so I think. She points out that they started hooking up while Pete had another girlfriend. I think he's going to have to prove his worth.

So meanwhile, a whole family of little boys Cooper has seen before has returned from abroad, and it turns out one has measles. This is because he was not vaccinated due to the mother's insistence that vaccination gave her oldest son autism. The practice basically goes into quarantine, and the health officials are called. The official who shows up is a smoking hot lady named Sonya who's clearly meant to be Sam's new love interest, but we spend the whole episode watching her be really mean to Sam ("You've been a bully!") before we get to the flirting stuff. It's totally cute to watch Sam scramble to make this mean lady happy, though.

The craziest moment of the night, in my book, was one Cooper sticks a needle into the third son's arm without the mom's consent! Is that legal? Do you think that was the right thing for Cooper to do at that moment when the other son is dying? I was actually touched by Charlotte's presence in the hospital the whole time too. I'm starting to maybe sort of wish she and Cooper would get back together. Am I nuts?

A couple more thoughts:

Big lesson from Dell's story line? Crack is whack. Just kidding. I mean, crack really is whack, but who knew Dell got his ex hooked on drugs? That was surprising. I'm glad they're working things out. Gotta think of the child.

I love how impressed Wyatt is that Addison is (was?) dating a cop. If I had an arrogant ass hanging over me teasing me about who to date, I too would be like, "Back off, buddy, I'm dating a man with a gun!"

So how long do you think they're going to make us wait for Addison and Wyatt to have hate sex? Naomi admitted she thought he was handsome too, but I think they're reserving him for Addison.

Ew! Sheldon's back! I do not like this guy, and I don't like him for Violet, and hello? No contest! Pete's a bajillion times cuter and nicer and better at sex.

Another funny moment: dance club with Sam and Sonya.

What did you guys think?

Photos copyright 2008 ABC, Inc.

Private Practice Rundown: Episode 10, "Worlds Apart"

Once again, Private Practice delivers the goods in this week's episode, thanks to lots of exciting plot twists that had more to do with my favorite doctors than their patients. I tuned in dying to find out how far Violet and Pete take their makeout session (turns out - pretty far!) and if Meg would find out. There's also the hot new doc downstairs whom Addison hates because he's ambitious and cocky and reckless with medicine and calls her "Monty!" It's practically written in the stars they'll have hate sex soon. But what about SWAT guy? Well, that gets complicated, so let's get to chatting about it. Just read more.

SWAT guy is way moody lately, and this week he's down right testy with Addison. The episode opens with yet another sex scene (seriously, is this the only way they think they can keep us from flipping the channel? They ought to try murder or dancing or something) and SWAT guy telling Addison he's all better and wants to go home because there are dishes and stuff waiting for him. Addison basically gives him the old pish-posh and tells him, "That's why God made cleaning ladies," which you just know is going to make the proud cop feel even more like a kept man. Things get more tense from there until the end, when SWAT guy packs his bags and storms out on Addison. I'm not sure if he had a right to be irritated or if he should have been able to deal with a strong, self-sufficient woman who happens to be a multi-millionaire heiress. Ever since Archer showed up it really does seem like the poor guy never felt quite good enough.

Addison goes to battle not only with her boyfriend but also with the entire office when she agrees to continue treating one of her patients who's become a prostitute, as well as her friends. Addison argues they're just college girls and don't seem to be bothered by a little bit of sex for money now and again, to which Violet responds, "Don't kid yourself. These girls are victims." And then SWAT guy storms in with all kinds of opinions and they fight it out with Cooper awkwardly lurking in the background ("I probably have patients. . .").

Meanwhile, Pete and Violet are doing all they can to avoid having sex with each other again because apparently the animalistic pull between them is extremely strong. Do you guys feel the heat? I love when Cooper notices that Violet's all "loose and relaxy" and jumps immediately to "You had sex!" The best ever, though, is the end, when she tells Coop that it's Pete and he says "Oh, yeah, sure" and excuses himself because "I don't want to be late for my date with Angelina Jolie." Also, Meg returns and knows right away something is wrong with Pete, but he just keeps saying "I missed you" over and over again - until Meg catches him mid-sexy time with Violet at the office. Now that's good drama!

A few more thoughts:

Bad idea of the night goes to Pete, who decides to talk about his love life with a therapist, who happens to be the "other woman" in this scenario.

What's up with Naomi? She's been lured in by Lockhart! Do you think Addison and Sam are overreacting with this "selling out" business or are they right to be concerned about this guy's motives.

Could Sam be any cuter being all protective in he elevator with Lockhart? "If you mess with Naomi - if you even think about screwing with her - I will take you out."

Addison goes from one extreme to another with her patient. At first she feels bad for this poor, misguided girl, and then in the hospital, when her patient's all black and blue, Addison spits out, "We are our actions . . . you're a hooker." Dang!

What did you think of this episode?

Private Practice Rundown: Episode Nine, "Know When to Fold"

Grey's Anatomy may be imploding before our eyes, what with ghost sex and rumors of original cast members quitting, but something's kicked into gear over on that other show Shonda Rhimes created. This week's episode is a pleasant surprise - and is exactly the kind of show I've known Private Practice could be: funny, moving, thoroughly entertaining, sexy. And most of all, it left me wanting more. Yay! In fact, there's so much good stuff going on here that I can hardly figure out where to start, so let's get to chatting - read more.

My basic conclusion is that when this show focuses more on the doctors in the practice than on trying to drum up crazy patient stories, the whole thing improves. In this episode we see the main cast members mixing it up with each other - the ladies dishing about sex in the opening, Sam and Pete on a medical case together, Cooper and Dell in a heart-to-heart, Dell and Naomi, the team meeting, etc. Oh and let's not forget Violet and Pete! OMG! So here's my question about that: When Sheldon first approaches Sam and Pete at the breakfast buffet about Violet, and Pete gets all protective ("Violet's one of our women - they took our floor, they are not taking our women, too") Sam asks if Pete is jealous as if that would be totally normal. Do you guys recall Violet and Pete ever dating? I don't. Strange. But whatever, I like them together. I really hope it doesn't turn out to be some kind of momentary comfort hookup kind of thing because I think they'd be a cute couple. Plus, that would lead to all kinds of awesome drama.

But I have to back up, because we've got to discuss the Sheldon stuff. I kind of laughed when those two are naked together talking about his inability to . . . you know, make things happen down there. Two shrinks talking about impotence naked together in that "tell me your feelings" tone of voice might be the least sexy sex scene I've witnessed. And Sheldon is neurotic and not cute: buh-bye. You know who on the fourth floor is cute? Dr. Wyatt Lockhart! He's totally an ass, but he's clearly meant to be someone Addison has hate sex with eventually, wouldn't you say? Are you ready for SWAT guy to step aside and make way for this new guy?

And as terrible as Charlotte is (I believe Violet refers to her as "the source of all evil" in this episode), this pregnancy scare between her and Cooper is awfully cute. Cooper would make the best dad! But when he discovers she's not actually pregnant, he totally goes cold on her again and shuts any hope of a relationship down. Now, do you guys think that because Charlotte gets oddly emotional at the end (and how great is Addison's facial expression during this scene?), that's a sign that maybe the pregnancy test was wrong? You know, hormones raging and stuff? Interesting!

Other thoughts:

Violet to Pete on how her date went: "Do you have anything for erections?" Ha!

Um, Lockhart asks Addison to dinner and says they could skip dinner and go straight to his place like, the first day they meet. That makes him kind of slutty.

Ugh and he keeps calling her "Monty," which is just so disrespectful but also totally hate-sex foreplay talk.

I love Charlotte's angry pregnancy test attitude: "I have sticks and I intend to pee on them!"

My hands-down favorite moment of the night, possibly the entire season, is Sam learning how to ride a bike with Naomi. It. was. adorable.

And I cracked up at this exchange between Cooper and Dell:

Dell: "Do you ever feel like you're in over your head?"
Cooper: "Have you met me?"

Are you guys mad at Pete for cheating on Meg? Does this count as cheating? Are he and Meg totally committed?

Ione Skye was the bicycler's wife! She's awesome. I have a feeling she'll be back to sue Sam and Pete or something.

Finally, Dell's adoption scheme is so headed for disaster. That girl is not going to give those nice people her baby.

Did you guys like this episode as much as I did?

Private Practice Rundown: Episode 8, "Crime and Punishment"

For the first time in a long time, this week's Private Practice did not kick off with some kind of steamy sex scene and instead opted for murder. It was sobering and an appropriate start to an episode that is very much concerned with when life begins and when it ends. After last week's relatively upbeat episode, this week felt dark and made me sad. Ready to chat about it? Just read more.

Poor Violet. Her job is rarely done once the patient leaves her office. She's called mid-models-walking by her ex-patient Doug, who asks her to come to his house because he's shot his wife in the head. It's a pretty dramatic scene, but Violet and Sam seem to take it in stride and quickly start debating whether Doug killed her in cold blood. For the rest of the episode, Violet acts really stressed out and is rude to people in the elevator - including the new therapist working at Charlotte's fourth-floor clinic. I smell a love connection! He seems nice, and he understands her line of work and all, but . . . couldn't they have found Violet someone a little cuter? I mean, everyone else seems to get really hot significant others (Charlotte can get away with a frosting bikini, Meg's a dead ringer for Tea Leoni, Addison's brother is a stone cold fox, and SWAT guy's adorable). Just sayin'.

Then we have Pete and Meg. After last week's previews, I was positive I'd dislike Meg working at Oceanside Wellness and therefore dislike Meg herself, but the exact opposite occurred. She's smart, articulate, matter-of-fact, and a grownup, and I think she's good for Pete. However - when she's pouting to Pete about being bored and "Oh, what do people who don't work or have kids do all day?" I was thinking, "People who don't have to work and don't have kids are probably stoked, lady!" And then the way she drums up a job after Pete suggests she does so is not totally believable, but I let it go.

It's funny the way decisions are made at this practice. Naomi sort of hires Meg, and in the same day, Meg's getting down to business and Dell's shadowing her. And she's performing an abortion, which is totally news to Naomi, which strikes me as strange since you'd think the kind of medical procedures Meg was planning on performing would have come up. Regardless, the abortion thing catches everyone off guard and results in a lot of rumination on the pros and cons of helping women get pregnant and ending pregnancy in the same practice.

All in all, a thoughtful but sad episode. A few more thoughts:

I like Violet's rule about no calls when the models are walking. I need a similar rule myself, and it would apply to both Project Runway and America's Next Top Model.

Do you think Cooper's going to take Charlotte back after she "does time"? Do you want him to? Addison points out Charlotte's clearly in love with him.

That couple that Addison and Charlotte help together broke my heart! When he carries his baby to see her mother one last time I totally broke down in tears.

Violet's meeting with Kevin is actually super-cute.

Remember when Dell was young and carefree and kind of like eye candy for the practice? I'm glad he's become a full-blown character with his own personal life, but man, he gets more and more complicated each episode. He's a dad, his mom's a drug addict, he's really torn up about abortion. The poor guy seems saddled by lots of stressful emotions.

As inappropriate as it seems, I, too, have secretly, momentarily wanted an ex to just die - but not really. I feel like Cooper and Sam capture that feeling really well this episode.

What did you all think?

Source

Private Practice Rundown: Episode Seven, "Tempting Faith"

Wow! This week's Private Practice has many a heart-pounding moment, including an actual punch-out in the Oceanside Wellness lobby and a gun-wielding SWAT guy protecting Addison. I feel satisfied with how a lot of the different plot lines turned out in this episode, as I think many of these threads were due to either end or hit some kind of dramatic climax. And yay for the addition of Addison's brother Archer! I have to admit the prospect of yet another character seemed daunting, but after talking to Grant Show about this guy, I was intrigued, and now I think he'll be a great addition to the show. Ready to talk about it? Just read more.

After Addison and SWAT guy spend a hot evening of go-karting together, they return to Addison's place to find the door open. Someone has clearly broken in, and SWAT guy goes into cop-mode, yanking a gun out of his sock and slowly heading in to confront the intruder - only to find Archer having sex with random lady on the kitchen floor. I have to say, for all the grief Archer gives Addison about dating a cop, this scene was awfully dreamy. I mean, he pulled a gun out of his sock! That's a handy attribute in a boyfriend. Anyway, turns out Archer is super snobby and makes lots of references to "Bizzy" (the Forbes Montgomery matriarch) and how no one from their elite east coast family would approve of Addison's lifestyle and especially the new boyfriend.

Then there's Violet. Was it just me or were her intimate therapy sessions with the pedophile seriously creepy? And not just creepy but uncomfortable and icky? Having this scary character around the office seems to make everyone a little nuts, including Dell. In fact, Violet and Dell come together after the big confrontation in the lobby and confide secrets in each other. We found out last week that rape was no laughing matter to Violet (is it to anyone though?) and it turns out that she was sexually assaulted. Violet also grows tired of waiting on Charlotte to tell Cooper the truth and unloads it on him. He breaks a glass door over the news!

And finally there's Naomi's "meaningless sex" with Archer. Addison's grossed out and sort of mad at both of them for going there - but not as mad as Sam, who punches Archer when he finds out. I liked when Naomi asks why Addison isn't mad at Archer, to which Addison answers, "There's a difference between my brother being a whore, and my best friend conscientiously choosing to sleep with him." In the end, I'm glad Naomi had sex before Sam, for some reason. And did we already know Naomi's only ever slept with Sam before? Very interesting!

Whoa! Charlotte's chocolate body paint bikini things was seriously . . . nude-looking for primetime.

On the one hand, I'm glad to see Cooper finally break things off with Charlotte, but on the other hand, I'll miss anecdotes related to their sex life, including the fact that after the party Cooper dressed up as Captain Von Trapp and Charlotte as a nun.

I felt the whole faith-based dilemma of the couple with the triplets was heavy handed. I mean, they had Southern accents for no great reason, which struck me as oddly stereotypical, for one thing. But more than that, I didn't find their story all that interesting.

Oh but my heart totally broke when SWAT guy's in the hospital telling Addison he doesn't fit into her world! She tells him she's proud that he's a SWAT guy, to which he responds, "I'm a cop . . . stop trying to class it up."

Do you like Pete and Meg together? Do you think there's something to Archer's insistence that Pete would be good for Addison, despite how arrogant his reasons for thinking that are?

Addison has a $25 million trust fund! Dang.

What did you guys think of last night? Chime in below!

On this week's Private Practice, Addison dives in headfirst to her trust issues stemming from her marriage with Derek. Just as the good doctor is settling into a fun and easygoing relationship with her cute SWAT guy, he goes and says something that brings everything to an awkward halt. And while Naomi thinks Addison's hang-ups are clear as day to anyone with eyes, it takes a sweet elderly couple to reveal to her and Sam how to move on from the shambles of their marriage. There's all kinds of psychodrama going around once again, so let's not waste time - just read more.

So right off the bat, SWAT guy interrupts sexy time with Addison to whisper that he loves her, which is a lot for Addison to handle. Thankfully she and Naomi are pretty much back to confiding in each other, so Addison has someone besides Pete (who makes a crappy girlfriend anyway) to chat with about guys. Naomi informs her that she can't say "I love you" back to him because she has trust issues ("You cheated on Derek, Derek cheated on you - how can you not?"). The best part of the opening for me, though, was all the guys at the bar trying to pick up ladies. Poor Pete's game is seriously hindered by Cooper and Sam. The three of them spot a cute blonde who turns out to be Charlotte, and this is the moment Cooper decides to go public with her (he later tells Violet he'd had a lot to drink by then).

But back to Addison. SWAT guy's confession has her in a mood and full of frustrating "you can't trust anyone; falling in love is scary" feelings which means: Cue the untrustworthy husband patient! In the regular world, a guy who is secretly married to two different women who both happen to be pregnant would be written off as a cretin, but in the world of Private Practice, this guy is actually someone Pete can sort of defend. I'm glad Addison stuck the women in the same room. I'd want someone to tell me the truth.

In other news, Charlotte is clearly about to break Cooper's heart. I mean, Violet basically spells it out: Why would she set up a practice to compete with her boyfriend if she didn't want to sabotage her relationship? And Sam and Naomi figure out they will always love each other but better move on. But the best relationship moment of the episode has to be Addison's crazy turn following SWAT guy and nearly getting herself arrested (Addison: "At first it was just routine surveillance." Naomi: "You are not a cop!"). A lesson to us all: Cheating on your husband with his best friend will likely cause long-term emotional damage and lead to stalking new boyfriends who love you.

Also:

I love the scene where all the doctors are gossiping about Cooper and Charlotte in the break room and they manage to ascertain from Violet's total silence that Coop's been dating Charlotte for a while.

Charlotte's called lots of fun names this episode, including Cruella (Violet) and the anti-Christ (Sam).

When Cooper hears about Addison's creepy patient, he gets pretty giddy with Violet about it: "Sad, but fodder for the best dinner party story ever!" Which is true.

I'm trying to sort out how the two women married to the same man would have figured that out so fast after Addison stuck them in that room together: "Oh hello there, my husband's name is Daniel." "Oh really? Mine too! Funny." "Yeah, funny." "Wait a minute, does your husband speak with an accent?" "Yes he does, how'd you kno . . . oh my God."

Dell has a kid! He was a teen dad!

I loved Addison's line about SWAT guy when she thought she'd ruined everything after, well, stalking him: "I'll never hear that sexy, SWATy voice again."

What did you guys think of this one?

Private Practice Rundown: Episode Five, "Let It Go"

If last week's Private Practice was all about getting elected, this week's is about what happens to all the lofty campaign promises once the election is over. All of our doctors have lofty dreams or plans for the future (and chips on their shoulders about the past), and this episode sees everyone realizing that sometimes, you've just got to . . . let it go. To chat about it, just read more.

Having Addison in charge is already causing problems at Oceanside. No matter what authority she now has, she's still the newcomer, and that means there's just a lot she doesn't know about the practice. Take Jenna: Addison sees a 17-year-old dying girl whose last wish is to have a baby with her reluctant husband and thinks it's ridiculous. Everyone else sees a patient who's been with them for ages, who's been through a terrible battle, and who's unfairly dying young. On that matter, Addison comes out ahead; though everyone is angry with her for interfering, they also realize they should have said no to Jenna long ago.

Addison also steps in to fix the practice's finances (with Dell as "the enforcer") and, by doing so, learns about the practice's second, empty office - a whole floor of prime real estate for the practice Sam and Naomi always dreamed of building. To her, it's a ridiculous expense. To Sam and Naomi, getting rid of it would be saying goodbye to the Oceanside they've imagined. And that's not the only thing Sam and Naomi are saying goodbye to: They finally realize that being together just because it's comfortable doesn't mean it's right. As for that office space, it ends up in very interesting hands: those of one Dr. Charlotte King, who's looking to bail on her St. Ambrose job.

Violet's story, meanwhile, dips into her past when a friend from college who's running for congress asks Violet to shred her medical records because she had shock therapy. Violet doesn't get the big deal: She sees Kara's story as a touching quest for help after the death of her mother. This, after all, is the person who counseled Violet through her rape (which we now finally know about). But when she gets her hands on the records, she learns Kara killed her own mother - accidentally, when she thought her mother was going to hurt her brother, but still. This story seemed pretty separate from the rest of the episode, but I like the way it brings Cooper and Violet back together.

Some other thoughts:

I can't believe we started with a steamy sex montage again. Twice in three weeks?

I'm going to miss Pete's friend, but Africa needs her. All the focus on her smoking seemed a bit silly until Pete said his wife died before she had the chance to quit. Sad!

Cooper and Charlotte spend the whole episode abstaining from sex while they await the results of their HIV tests so they can ditch the condoms. OK, first, what happened to them having a relationship where they get to know each other? And second, did we ever see either one of them actually open the test results?

The idea of Jenna profoundly moving Sam with some cliched life lessons rang a little false to me. Isn't he supposed to be some wellness guru? Wouldn't he already know to live every day like it's his last?

So, Charlotte is moving a little closer, Naomi and Addison have reached a sort of detente, and Sam and Naomi are going to attempt a real separation. Is this all a recipe for disaster? We have to wait two weeks to find out, but in the meantime, tell me your thoughts below!
