Microwaved Peeps Revisited

This time last year, I let you in on the microwaved Peeps secret. OK, it really wasn't much of a secret, but some of you were surprised by how much they expand. The microwave we tested them in didn't have a see-through screen, so the results weren't that easy to document. Luckily for everyone who's interested, I've found a group of folks who have a camera inside their microwave. TV Dinners: South Park - Microwaved Peeps

Last night the bf was flipping through the channels and landed on a new episode of South Park. The episode itself poked fun at Easter in a Da Vinci Code style. The weirdest thing is I was actually writing a post about how we microwaved Peeps when, what? What is that? They are microwaving Peeps on South Park?!?

Sometimes the universe is wild like that.

So, for today's TV Dinner, I present microwaved Peeps. However, unlike the ones on South Park, ours did not expand to the point where they took over the building and burst out all the windows - but they did expand. We ran three tests and then tried a Peep joust (we didn't have toothpicks so we improvised). Unfortunately, the microwave in our office has a weird screen in front of the window, so we really couldn't see in. This meant no fun video for us (we tried, it looked terrible), so we'll have to show you what happened with still photographs instead.

We put the first Peep in for 15 seconds, it puffed up a tiny bit and deflated into a pile of sticky goo. I preferred the 15 second taste to the 0 second taste. It was warm and a tiny bit more flavorful. I was also surprised because it somehow still managed to look like a bird.

Our tests also ran at 30 seconds, 45 seconds and then a jousting event:

Next we tried upping the time to 30. It puffed up in the middle, got crispy on the sides, and then became golden in the back (note: our microwave's rotating tray thing, doesn't actually rotate). The taste reminded us a bit of roasted marshmallows, which surprised me since where was the roasting?

After seeing a slight burn and only a small puff (it was hard to see through the grate, but we tried our best), we upped the time to 45 seconds. At 45 seconds our Peep more than doubled in size (they deflate immediately after you open the door), became charred on the edges and made the office smell like burnt toast.

We were going to go for 1 minute, but decided that the last two Peeps would be better spent jousting. Unfortunately we didn't have any toothpicks in the office, so we broke off some tines off of a plastic fork and set them up that way. I was expecting one of the tines to pop the other (I think that's the point of Peep jousting), however instead of hating each other, they just merged into one big giant lovefest Peep. I guess our Peeps were lovers, not fighters...

Goblins, Ghosts and Spider Cupcakes, Oh My!

It's time to get spooky in the kitchen! Most everybody loves a cupcake and boy have we got some haunted frosted tops that will make wee ones squeal! Though the creepy cakes may look tough to tackle, these deliciously lil devils are a cinch to make and the youngsters can easily give a helping hand.

First, pick out your candy and decor. I was lucky enough to find all of my inspiration at Walgreens. Here is my quick list of goodies:

Ghost Peeps
Candy corn
Black and orange sprinkles
Goblin and witch jelly pops
A bag full of plastic purple and black spider rings

First you'll want to bake up a batch of cupcakes to your liking. Choose fun Halloween frosting colors like black, white and green and frost the cakes. Add sprinkles if you wish.
Peeps:
If using the Peeps, take a straw or a toothpick and push it halfway into the marshmallow. Then poke the remaining portion into the cupcake. Add candy corn for color and added sugar bonus.
Witches:
The jelly pops are easy enough as you can simply unwrap them and stick them into the cupcake as is.
Spiderweb:
The most complicated of the bunch, these are still quite easy. Frost the cupcakes with white icing and use a knife to spread it smoothly. Then take the black icing and make three circles starting with the smallest one first. Then make four lines across the entire cupcake to form the web. Take a clean knife and insert it just a bit to make room for the ring portion of the spider. Push the spider in and mama's got a perfect web!

A Healthier Easter Basket

You've seen the Easter Candy breakdown. You cast your vote for your favorite Easter Candy over on YumSugar...and now you're thinking maybe I should make a healthy Easter Basket. Well you know I am going to second that option. I am going to go so far as to give you some suggestions.

Carrots - The Easter Bunny likes to share
Fresh fruit
Homemade cookies that are filled with healthy ingredients like oats, raisins, dried cranberries, walnuts, and dark chocolate chips

Bars of Dark chocolate
Dark chocolate covered peanuts, pretzels, or raisins
Mini banana bread muffins
An exercise DVD
A scented candle
Hand soap shaped like bird's eggs (my girls love these)
A jar of all fruit jam
Granola bars
A potted plant
Small picture frames
Herbal teas and a mug
A CD of relaxing music
Silly Putty - it comes in its own egg
For kids: a coloring book, colored pencils, puzzles, small toys, stuffed bunnies, stickers, play-doh, magnets, disposable cameras, packets of seeds and gardening tools, plastic eggs filled with coins, beads, and books about Easter.

Fit's Tips: I don't believe in denying yourself anything, especially during special family and holiday times. Make sure you do enjoy yourself (and the treats), and try the things you love, just don't go overboard and eat the ENTIRE 12 inch chocolate bunny in one sitting.

Will Ferrell Makes People Think of Peeps?!?

I read the weirdest press release last week. The folks over at Just Born (the folks responsible for Peeps, the Easter marshmallow tradition) announced the results to their annual Peeps Celebrity Survey. With a name like that, I assumed they surveyed celebrities, but no, that's not true at all. It's a survey about Peeps in relation to celebrities. For example, 22% of the people surveyed feel that Will Ferrell is the male person most resembling a Peep in "physique, colorful attire, or sweet nature/personality." Okay, so the first few don't have much to do with "celebrity" and according to the press release, the survey is actually done as "an important way to keep up with today's trends and cultures."

59% of the people surveyed think the chick is cooler than the bunny - personally I like the bunny. I munch the ears off first, which is even weirder to me because I don't even like the way they taste.
More people enjoy the Peeps fresh (as opposed to "aged").
When asked how people enjoyed their Peeps. The top three answers were: head first, in crafts/decor and micro-waved. Hrmm... micro-waved, really? I might have to try that (again, not sure why I need to, just feel compelled to).

After Will Ferrell, people felt that Johnny Depp, Jamie Foxx and Justin Timberlake all resembled a Peep.
When asked what "female public person or celebrity might Peeps become," the answers were Jessica Simpson, Oprah and Ellen DeGeneres.
The male person most in need of a Peep is President Bush (2nd year in a row), followed by Donald Trump and Simon Cowell. Something tells me that Simon might just bite the head off and spit it out...
The female person most in need of a Peep is dear ol' Britney (at 40%).

Now what I want to know is how many people actually took this survey and what was the age range.
