Would You Ever Get a Perm?

Perms get such a bad rap just because grandmas love them and they were a staple ingredient of '80s hair. Despite the fact that I know how useful they can be, and how many different kinds of perms there are, I might almost be hesitant to tell people if I got one, just for fear that they'd start laughing before I could explain. What's your opinion on the whole thing? Has the perm just gotten too much negative press to make a comeback? Do you even consider it an option? Or are you permed and proud?

Ah, the permanent wave. My seventh-grade self had some questionable taste in hairstyles, and I wanted a spiral perm so badly. (All the popular girls had them.) After much nagging, my mother relented and gave me a home perm. It looked as awesome as you can imagine. These days, perms can look much better than they did back in the day. A friend has a digital perm, and it looks super-chic. Have you ever had one?

Is Eyelash Perming Safe?

Women can be tempted to do some painful and dangerous things in order to shave seconds off their beauty prep time. Even though the promised results of some of these procedures can be tempting, sometimes they are just not worth the risk.

I see how eyelash perming could sound enticing: You'd have perfectly flipped-up lashes 24-hours a day, no eyelash curler required. The way it works is that your lashes are treated with a special glue, and then wrapped around a mini sponge-y roller. While holding your eyes tightly shut, the perming solution is applied to the upturned lash, and then it is left to set for about five minutes. The result is that "wide-awake" look, which lasts for two to three months.

The lash perming solution has not been approved by the FDA.
Eyes are extremely sensitive organs, and they react differently than other parts of your body to certain chemicals. Even if the chemicals do not come in direct contact with the eye (which they absolutely should not during this process), they can still cause severe reactions, particularly if you wear contact lenses. These reactions can include anything from mild irritation to a full-blown allergic reaction, even blindness.
While the normal eyelash has a lifespan of about five months, perming chemicals can be damaging to the lash, making them fall out even sooner.

If you do choose to give it a try, make sure that the person performing the procedure has completed a training course and has the certificate to show for it, as such courses are available through most cosmetology institutions. Have any of you tried this procedure? If so, what did you think?

Bellissima! A Perm For Your Eyelashes

We've heard all about lash extensions for length, but eyelash perms are strictly for curl. The Japanese Eyelash Perm, offered at salons such as Takamichi Head to Toe Hair Salon in New York City, is becoming a popular way to have semi-permanent, flirty lashes.

The procedure can take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes, it costs around $80 and lasts between three to five weeks. To begin, your lashes get curled over rubber rollers. Then, chemical solutions are applied; and finally, your lashes get a conditioning. This sounds just like a perm! Considering that false eyelashes take at least eight to 10 minutes to apply and another five to take off, I think the investment is time-efficient. Would you ever consider a lash perm?

Relaxed vs. Natural Hair vs. Weaves vs. Dreads

Here are highlights from OnSugar blog Krissy's One Stop Beauty Spot.

Women, especially black women, have the ability to change hairstyles like underwear. I support you ladies no matter what you do - just do it right and take care of your hair. For the most part we all practice the same principles when it comes to proper hair care (co-washing, ACV rinse, trims, deep conditioning, etc.). I'm always willing to help people with hair questions and concerns, or at least point them in the right direction. I know plenty of people in that area.

Where I stand on a lot of hair issues:

I'm anti kiddie perms and kiddie dreadlocks on children if they're at an age where they can't make that choice for themselves (unless, of course, it's part of your religion). It's not about the chemicals, it's about the fact that it's a permanent hairstyle on a child. What if your child decides they want to wear their natural hair? You'll have to either cut their hair to transition them to natural hair. Yes, you can remove dreads but unless someone can find me a "safe" method that doesn't damage the hair, then I won't be changing my mind about this.
I'm pro weaves and braids as long as it's done right and your hair is still being kept healthy. If your hair is being done too tight and coming out, it's time to find a new stylist.
I'm pro curly and natural hairstyles within corporate America. I hear a lot of natural haired beauties bragging about self-acceptance and mainstreaming natural hair, but they still search for corporate hairstyles because of their natural hair. A bun will always be conservative no matter what type of hair you have.
I've always encouraged hair dialogue among women of different nationalities. You'll be surprised by the things we all have in common. If your non-black friend is telling you about a great hair balm that she pays $15 for, take her on a trip to a local beauty supply store and show her where to buy it for $5.

Perm Sales Are Up; The '80s Are Back

When model Agyness Deyn started dressing like Max Headroom, I figured it was just a harmless nod to '80s style. But now, I'm worried that the decade's look coming back in a bigger, more nefarious way. In Britain, the perm is back in a big way:

Sales of do-it-yourself permanent wave kits have climbed 50 percent in the past year, according to Superdrug. The chain sold more of the kits in the past week than it did during all of February 2006.

I lived through the first, er, wave of home perms, and I have the unflattering junior-high class photos to prove it. But apparently, most of the women buying these perms are in their teens and early twenties, so it's new to them. (Is it only a matter of time before Kelly LeBrock's hair, pictured, is dictating styles?) Can't say this is one retro throwback I'm going to follow, even if it does wind up being the next big thing.

Beehive vs. Perm: Which Amy Winehouse Hairstyle Do You Prefer?

Amy Winehouse was snapped yesterday on her way to the pub sporting yet another enormous beehive. It looks like she's wearing a hair piece attached to her new short hair do. Only last week, Amy debuted her new curly perm but it appears like she's already having nostalgia for her trademark big retro hair style. Which of these looks do you prefer on the singer?

Love It or Hate It? Amy Winehouse's New Perm

A high spirited Amy Winehouse visited her old flat in Camden last night. She wore a scruffy tee shirt but all eyes were on her latest hairstyle. Amy's new short perm looked messy but admittedly super shiny as she scampered around London wearing not a scrap of makeup.

It's refreshing to see Amy making a change from her enormous beehive and I like how this cut makes her hair look naturally thick and healthy. It feels hard to judge Amy's appearance too harshly right now, seeing as she's going through such a rough time. How about you, do you think this new do suits Amy?
