Peter Krause, Maura Tierney to Play Siblings in Parenthood

Meet the Bravermans: Peter Krause and Maura Tierney have signed on for starring roles in NBC's TV remake of Parenthood, playing new versions of the characters made famous by Steve Martin and Dianne Wiest.

They join Dax Shepard, Craig T. Nelson, Mae Whitman (who?), and the previously cast Erika Christensen as the potential members of the sprawling Braverman clan. Here's a quick breakdown of the who's-who so far:

Krause will play Adam Braverman, "a married man with two children who is a lunatic beneath the surface."
Tierney will play his sister Sarah, the single mother of . . .
. . . Whitman's character, a rebellious 16-year-old.
Shepard's character is the youngest Braverman, a slacker.
Christensen is their sister Julia, a corporate attorney.
And Nelson will play the clan's father, "a Vietnam vet-turned-actor/hippie."

I was a little skeptical of this project at first, just because a TV adaptation of Parenthood failed once before, but I'm starting to get a kick out of this cast. I'll give anything with Krause a try at least once, so I'm starting to hope that this one makes it through pilot season and onto our TVs. What about you?

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to the titles below, the Oscar-winning documentary Taxi to the Dark Side is also now available on DVD.

Iron Man
Hurray! It feels like just yesterday the Summer box office was electrified by this superhero hit. I really loved it (and saw it twice in the theaters), mostly due to a super cool performance by Robert Downey Jr. and the skillful storytelling abilities of director Jon Favreau. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, and Terrence Howard also do well in this fun action movie. It's a good way to go back in time and shake off those dark, depressing blues you may have caught from your 10th viewing of The Dark Knight.

Special features include deleted and extended scenes, featurettes titled "I Am Iron Man: 7-Part Making-of Documentary," "The Invincible Iron Man: 6-Part History of the Hero," and "Wired: The Visual effects of Iron Man." Something I'm really curious to see in the extras is a Robert Downey Jr. screen test and a featurette on his acting process. More time with RDJ is always good.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Another comedy from the Apatow universe to add to your at-home collection (or your Netflix queue): Forgetting Sarah Marshall, starring Jason Segel, Kristen Bell, and Mila Kunis in a story about a guy trying to get over his most recent ex. And this could be considered a good thing or a warning, depending on your opinion: VMA host Russell Brand is in this movie and has a ton of screen time.

The unrated version is cryptically described as including scenes "you couldn't see in theaters" which I pray does not mean more of Jason Segel's private parts. I saw plenty myself, how about you? Other special features include a gag reel and a featurette titled "Line-o-rama: Lines you'll be reciting for ages."

Sports Night: Complete Series
On days like today, I really wish Aaron Sorkin would stop fiddling around on Facebook and get back to writing really awesome TV shows. He's definitely more hit than miss on the small screen and today's release of the special anniversary edition of his acclaimed Sports Night is an example of what it's like when he's hit his stride.

If you've never heard of the show, it's loosely based on ESPN's Sports Center, and it takes a look at the behind-the-scenes dynamics. The awesome cast is led by Peter Krause and Felicity Huffman who skillfully deliver those faster-than-the-speed-of-light dialogues that Sorkin is so good at writing.

The special edition DVD set includes new interviews with Sorkin, cast members Josh Charles, Robert Guillaume, Felicity Huffman, Peter Krause, and Joshua Malina; a featurette where real SportsCenter employees compare their experiences with the characters on Sports Night; a look back with creators Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme; and of course, gag reels.

First Look: Dirty Sexy Money's Second Season

The last episode of ABC's Dirty Sexy Money aired so long ago, it had a Nutcracker theme. The show - like its counterparts in ABC's Wednesday night lineup, Pushing Daisies and Private Practice - went off the air during the writers' strike and never returned. This week, Dirty Sexy Money is back, amid a bunch of promises from the producers that this year's show will be "dirtier," "sexier," and - you got it - "monier."

Along those lines, they've added Lucy Liu to the cast as Nola Lyons, a "whip-smart, overachieving, and very fashionable" attorney who goes up against Peter Krause's Nick George. Nick, meanwhile, will find himself more affected by the over-the-top wealth and naughty antics of the Darlings, even as he tries to stay on the sidelines.

The show's gone through a lot of turmoil since its premiere (several executive producers, episodes that were reshot or ditched altogether), but I'm hoping Dirty Sexy Money can pull it together for season two. I was recently rewatching parts of last season online, and there were definitely signs of a fun soap opera in there. Want to check out how things are looking so far? ABC All Stars Pose Hands-on-Hips and Party the Night Away

After spending a long day sitting on panels and fielding questions at the TCAs, the ABC and Disney stars got dressed up and hit the red carpet last night. Despite moving filming to NYC, the Ugly Betty beauties like Becki Newton (get her look here) were representing, even with no America Ferrera. Mixing our medical shows, Kate Walsh hung all over Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence celebrating life back on ABC. Nick Lachey didn't have Vanessa on his arm but looked handsome out promoting his High School Musical reality show. TCAs Get Private, Dirty, Desperate and a Little Bit Grey

Some of the big names at ABC hit the stage at the TCAs in LA this afternoon. Even though there was no specific Grey's Anatomy panel, the show was still the first thing on everyone's mind when Shonda Rhimes entered the room - check out all of that on Buzz. Sigh, love Peter Krause. As for Desperate Housewives, Eva's haircut is adorable in person, she got it since she was told to get a "mom" cut and didn't want to wear a wig, and we should expect to see her looking glamorous again by mid season. Mark Cherry also jokingly admitted how the 5 year flash forward got out, "I made the mistake of telling one of my actors, and the next thing I read it in the Times, going, 'Damn it, Marcia.'" Fictional Sibling Fest At Roma Fiction Fest

The Roma Fiction Fest turned in to a fictional sibling fest as cast mates from two of my favourite shows - Brothers & Sisters and Dirty Sexy Money - gathered at a photo call at the Adriano Cinema in the Italian city yesterday. The gorgeous Dave Annable and adorable Luke MacFarlane stood either side of their Brothers & Sisters pal Balthazar Getty, perhaps protecting him from all those rumours about his alleged affair with Sienna Miller. Seeing the other trio of TV stars - Peter Krause, Natalie Zea and William Baldwin - has made me excited all over again for the next season of Dirty Sexy Money. Which series do you enjoy the most?

Pop Watch: Dirty Sexy Money, Ep 10 "The Nutcracker"

Last night's episode of Dirty Sexy Money was also the season finale – the reason for the incredibly short season is the writers' strike, but the show will be back on US TV in the autumn. A whole load of things happened in the final episode so lets get started!

So Jeremy was still keeping up the "I'm a tortured artist" thing with Sofia, and Lisa was getting deeper into the whole Darling family net by helping him out. I guess those puppy dog eyes will convince almost anyone to do anything...
On a trivia note: Did you know Seth Gabel, who plays Jeremy, is married to actress Bryce Dallas Howard? They have a son named Theodore.
Carmelita was feeling antsy, thinking she was being followed and that someone had been in her apartment. Which caused Clark to place a video camera in a plant in her apartment and keep up some surveillance. Is there anything Clark can't do?

Simon told Nick that he was with Karen, and Nick's reaction added fuel to my thoughts that he still has feelings for her. There's a lot going on behind those eyes of his.
You know you must be ridiculously rich when you have an annual Nutcracker evening like the Darlings. How amazing was that?
Brian’s un-churchlike activities finally caught up with him career-wise and he was suspended for six months... “What’s next? Leprosy?” That made me giggle.

Nick was still being honest with Tripp and sorted out the documents that Simon was requesting. Is Simon still testing Nick? And who was Tripp talking to on the phone?
We got a little more Juliet this episode, who apparently took Karen’s honeymoon. And flew over a guy from the Seychelles who she's decided will be her first.
I loved all the scenes with Lisa and Jeremy this episode, especially the one relating to the big sponge – “What do you clean with it? Big art?” I'm with Jeremy on the whole not entirely understanding modern art thing...
Simon took Karen to meet his ex-wife – a Princess from Ghana. Wow, uncomfortable... Is Simon testing Karen too? Perhaps he's on to her...
Meanwhile Jeremy and Lisa got stoned in the gallery – Lisa advocated telling the truth to Sofia and confessed she's losing Nick. She finally let it all out. Poor Lisa. In a moment of stoned sensitivity/madness Jeremy kissed Lisa, and I loved how it was completely underplayed. It might pop up next season though?
I kind of second Kiki's sentiment when she saw the house all decked out for The Nutcracker: “I have to marry into this family.” But then... they're also insane.
The big sponge ended up reeking of the pot Jeremy and Lisa smoked, so it didn’t sell. Oh, and Lisa got fired. No worries though, Nick suggested Lisa could have another baby!
My favourite line: “They managed to allude the ficus” – Clark after Carmelita went missing from her apartment.
How strange was it to see Brian in a suit?
Jeremy told Sofia the truth, and his excuse for lying was that he's "suffered too much at the hands of these love pirates.” Love pirates. Genius. Sadly, Sofia was not impressed, and left him.
Simon agreed to let Karen go, after Nick gets angry at him. But the final reveal was that Karen is working with Tripp to get info about Simon Elder! She's been scheming it up real nice – first with her Mum about getting Nick, and now with Tripp about getting into Simon's affairs. Interesting...

Pop Watch: Dirty Sexy Money, Ep 8 "The Watch"

We got another glimpse into the complicated world of those wealthy Darlings last night in Dirty Sexy Money, as well as some flashbacks that helped us to understand Dutch's relationship with Letitia and Nick. Here's some of my thoughts on last night's episode:

I thoroughly enjoy Brian and Nick’s banter. Brian’s so fuelled with rage all the
time… it was so stupid of him to bribe his way to get custody.
So, Patrick was in hospital after Ellen shot him at the country house last episode, she's still as acerbic as ever:

“You shot me in the leg.” “I was aiming for higher.”
And one of the biggest mysteries of the show so far was cleared up. The answer to why Brian is treated differently to Patrick and Karen? Why does Letitia make that distinction?

So, Brian is Nick’s brother!! Did any of you call it? I mean, it makes sense – if any of them it totally had to be Brian. Mainly because the two of them despise each other in an incredibly entertaining style. So glad it’s not Karen. Ick... although I guess Letitia wouldn’t have been behind the ‘nabbing Nick’ plan if they were siblings.
The first flashback was of Dutch and Letitia, and I was struck by how different she was with him – so free, and way more relaxed. But how could you cheat on Donald Sutherland?! We also got a little more insight into Nick and Dutch’s relationship, and Dutch’s regret about not being there for him. Sad.
Loved that Lisa got a little more play in this episode – it’s about time that I get my chance to actually make up my mind about her. And the last person I expected to see her bonding with was Jeremy, but if anyone's going to completely endear me to someone it's him.

“Jeremy, we’re not poor.”
“Those ants look pretty low budge’…”
“Those ants cost 12,000 bucks.”
“Proving my point.”

Different. World.
Karen’s inappropriate “death-themed” gabble in front of Simon made me giggle, she totally scored there!
Juliet was back for literally a second, it was nice to see her.
Jeremy’s version of poor was basically a sixteen year old boys room. Weirdly, Sofia wasn’t into that. Sharing his “going into space” dream didn’t really help. He’s so clueless and hyper like a puppy dog, but I love him.
So Lisa's now Jeremy’s mentor, trying to help him out of his mess of lies. His latest: He’s an artist. “You are not a struggling artist” “Sure I am, I’m an artist of life!” Oh dear.
Simon’s getting his claws in everywhere and I still can’t work out if he’s entirely evil or not. So hard to tell! He has Patrick, and he’s getting to Karen... but I don't take her for a complete fool, no matter how she seems sometimes.
Brian started rethinking his life when he found out he wasn't Tripp's son, attributing all the alienation he’s ever felt to this turn of events. How do you come to terms with something like that?
You just knew Sofia was going to want Jeremy to paint her, right? And Jeremy’s obviously no Jack Dawson from Titanic. This will not end well.
The breakdown of Nick and Dutch’s relationship in that final flashback broke my heart. You never think that’s the last time you’re going to see a person.
Final heartbreak? Brian Jr in the back of the cab after Brian Snr gave him Dutch's watch. Such a cute little boy.

Pop Watch: Dirty Sexy Money, Ep 7 "The Country House"

It was Thanksgiving on last night's Dirty Sexy Money and Nick was full of hope he'd have the full five day holiday away from the Darlings... Yeah right. I hope the temporary 8pm timeslot didn’t catch you out as it was a fab and fun-packed episode as usual! Here's my thoughts:

Tripp was still seething about Patrick being taken away by Simon Elder, so he asked Nick to arrange a sit-down with them both. And it turned out he has a twist-packed motive.
Karen’s moved on from her almost-marriage. With Giorgio – I loved how Jeremy was impressed that he’s "always there for her" post-divorce.The siblings' high-five made me giggle.
Poor Brian missed Brian Jr, but Karen was full of her own brand of comforting logic, saying "You know how the justice system works: whoever has the most money wins."

Patrick and Ellen's relationship was strained to say the least. Their meeting with Carmelita made me so uncomfortable, as they negotiated terms for time to spend with Pat. What a difficult situation.
Brian needed to just chill out, saying “Beat it you prissy little creep” to the opposing lawyer. Then the whole Gustav story came out. And then he tried to bribe his way to custody. Oh Brian... maybe they should just lock him in a room until it's all over? Just leave it to Nick!

Meanwhile Jeremy got a date with Sofia, using the last name Babeson. I loved Jeremy and Clark’s conversation – J: “Where do people like you go out? You know, poor people. Where do poor people go out?” He also thought Clark's silent movie moustache seemed pretty poverty-related. Clark's response? “Yes that’s right Jeremy, I can’t actually afford a beard.” Ha! I love Clark (aka Daddy Babeson... eek!)
Karen zoned in on Simon at the country house dinner – she’s man obsessed. Could things heat up there do you think? (Well the teaser for next week's episode shouts a resounding YES!) Perhaps it would put a halt to Operation Nick, but it would hurt Tripp to lose two children to Simon.
Simon insisted everything between him and Patrick was business, but Tripp believes it’s personal as Simon’s family have a history with the Darlings. Everything got a little complicated – Simon's parents used to work for the Darlings – now I’m even more intrigued. What is Simon’s agenda?
You just knew something was going to happen with those guns the minute they came out, right? Yes, Patrick was on the receiving end of a bullet after sneaking out to see Carmelita. I can kind of see where Ellen’s coming from. It was well covered up by Nick too, he’s a genius media handler.
Karen and Letitia were still scheming about Nick. It's so bad, but I do love Karen. She makes me laugh. Letitia spilled to Lisa that Karen kissed Nick after her divorce, and Operation Nick got a major boost. Lisa stormed out to her parents’ house. Just another relationship that’s under a lot of strain.
Speaking of Lisa – will she ever get her own storyline? It might make me like her more...
How long do you think it’ll be until Sofia finds out Jeremy’s a Darling? This can’t last too long, can it?
Could Simon have had the motive to kill Nick’s Dad then? He demolished Darling Plaza and a whole lot of Darling history. So sad.

Yeah, a lot of questions to end on, but this series always asks more questions than it answers each week. But not in an occasionally-frustrating Lost way. So what did you think of this week's episode and revelations? As always I can't wait to hear your thoughts!
