Tongue Piercings Can Lead to Fatality

Add brain abscesses to the list of dangers associated with getting a tongue piercing. The latest Archives of Neurology details the case of a 22-year-old man who died from multiple lesions on his brain two weeks after getting pierced. Doctors say the man's piercing became infected and the condition spread to his brain.

Tongue piercing does not usually result in fatality, but doctors still warn against it because of the associated risks. Some of the more common risks are chipped teeth, receding gums, and oral infections. Rare cases of toxic shock syndrome and blood poisoning have also been reported.

If you decide on a tongue piercing for yourself, get it done from a professional piercer in a hygienic setting and make sure to care for it properly once home. Also, be prepared for a little hunger - when Drew Barrymore got her tongue pierced, she says she could hardly eat or drink anything for two weeks!

Are You Into Piercings?

A little while back, I asked you "Are You Into Tattoos" and I got a great response, so that got me thinking about other things people do to accent and decorate their bodies - piercings.

It astounds me just how many different places people can get pierced. I'm cool with your basic pierce, like ones on your ear lobe, nose, eyebrow or bellybutton, but the more creative ones, like on your lip, tongue, neck, or below the belt make me a little uncomfortable, to be honest. When I see them I ask myself "How do they eat with that thing?" or "How much did that hurt!?"

So what about you? Are you attracted to people with piercings? Do they turn you off? Are you okay with certain piercings but not okay with others? What I want to know is, when it comes to people you date, are you into piercings?

Genital Piercings: What Do You Think?

I had a friend once who came up to me all excited to tell me that she had gotten her hood pierced. I wouldn't say that I'm in the dark about most things having to do with your private parts, but this one left me puzzled. Then she explained what she was talking about and my eyes widened.

"Hmph," I said, which basically meant "ouch" and "what the hell were you thinking?" all in one. She said that it's supposed to enhance your sexual experience greatly, and that you can even get aroused from just walking down the street! That sounds good at first, but honestly, I think it'd be a bit too much. I think about sex enough as it is so I'm not sure a physical reminder hanging next to my clitoris 24-7 would be necessary. Body piercings like this navel ring are one thing, but genital piercings - well, I'm going to have to pass.

So what do you think about them? Do you have one or would you ever consider getting your lady business pierced? Have you ever been with someone who's had genital piercings? If so, do they really enhance your sexual experience?

Is Getting Your Daughter's Ears Pierced a Big Deal?

Getting your ears pierced in my grammar school was a huge deal. My mom finally let me puncture my earlobes with tiny gold studs when I was 10. I still remember what I wore to the mall and how my classmates inspected the jewels when I got to school. In the years that followed, my friends and I would make trips to the mall just to buy earrings and expand our collections. For some people, ear piercing is a cultural tradition done when lil girls are born or still babies. Other parents believe it's a right of passage into adolescence.

I've heard stories about moms who made their daughters wait until graduation or celebrated their first period by allowing them to pierce their ears. I didn't have a plan so when my 5-year-old told me she wanted to get hers done the other day, I said okay. She loves fashion, putting outfits together and creating her own style, but next month she'll be heading to kindergarten at a private school that requires her to wear a uniform. Choosing earrings will still allow her a bit of creativity.

The other reason I'm granting her wish is because our new baby will soon make its debut. Before my son was born, we took a trip to Los Angeles to visit my best friend for a girls' weekend and my daughter still talks about it. I want her to have the same type of special memory prior to this sibling - not just because she's about to get another sister or brother, but because she's growing up too. What's your opinion on ear piercing?

Sexy Robert Sulks and Smokes With Emilie In NYC

Last time we saw Robert Pattinson he was looking rather dashing in his smart suit, but yesterday he was back to looking a little scruffy in his casual clothes as he filmed Remember Me alongside Emilie De Ravin. Pierce Brosnan also made an appearance on set yesterday, but Emilie and Robert filmed what looked like a rather sad scene as they sat looking sulky on the New York stoop, with Rob lighting up a cigarette too. While Daniel Radcliffe said that Robert was "genuinely sexy" earlier this week, Justin Timberlake has also commented on his sexiness - when a fan asked JT why he wasn't sexy like Rob, he replied "Because God loved him more than me." Well, I think they're both pretty hot -there's definitely room for more than one heartthrob for our manjoyment!

Daniel Says Robert Is "Genuinely Sexy" As He Suits Up On Set

Robert Pattinson was still looking gorgeous in his shades on the set of Remember Me yesterday, but this time he was all dressed up and looking rather dashing in a suit. Pierce Brosnan was also ready for filming looking rather tanned in a grey suit, while Emilie De Ravin looked beautiful in her printed dress. With Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince being released this week, some attention has turned back to Daniel Radcliffe, but Dan thinks his old costar Rob is a much better looking chap than him, saying:

“Rob Pattinson is a genuine sexy guy. He's got the height. If girls like short and nerdy, then I'm a sex symbol! I've said probably three words to him in the last three years and that was before Twilight all kicked off. But I wish him well. Hopefully, I'll see him at some point.”

Maybe the two will even team up again in the future - would you like to see Dan and Rob work together again?

Bruised Robert Is Joined By Pierce and Diane To Remember

Robert Pattinson has been looking bruised and battered again on the set of Remember Me in New York this week, as he shoots more scenes for the movie. While Emilie De Ravin hasn't been around this week, fellow castmember Pierce Brosnan appeared looking very smart and smiley in his suit, and Diane Sawyer was also spotted on set. While Robert was out in the warmth of New York, his former Harry Potter costars were out getting soaked at the London premiere of the latest movie - maybe the difference in weather yesterday will make Robert feel a little less homesick.

Have You Ever Pierced Your Own Ears?

At a recent visit to Sally Beauty, I couldn't help but notice a DIY ear piercing display with something like the Studex System 75 Ear Piercing Instrument front and center ($17). While I'm definitely not afraid of the needle, I think I may actually be more leery of this sharp object if it were coming straight from my own hands. (Blood, fainting.)

What about you? Whether it was the old ice-and-a-needle trick or the regular piercing gun routine, have you dabbled in any self-piercing techniques? If so, how did it turn out? Did you end up with a nasty infection or were the results problem-free?

Robert Pattinson Looks Cut Up As He Continues To Remember

Wow, the bloodied cuts on Robert Pattinson looked very convincing as he waited to shoot scenes on Remember Me earlier this week. He hid behind his shades as usual, as did his costar Emilie De Ravin as she crossed the street in her plaid shirt. Pierce Brosnan was also on set, looking very tanned in his role as Rob's character's father. Shooting wraps up shortly as Rob is due at Comic Con in San Diego this week to promote his Twilight movies. Are you looking forward to seeing him get back on the New Moon promotion trail?
