Considering all the things we hear and read about the presidential candidates, I'm first to admit that it can be very overwhelming to digest it all. I've picked up facts from Animals & Politics, and I wanted to share a few notes about candidates from both the Republican and Democrat parties with you. I'm by no means endorsing (or bashing) any candidates – so I've just selected positive points here. Stay tuned for my new pal, CitizenSugar, who will be joining us very soon . . . and can discuss and bring you up-to-date on the full picture!

Rudy Giuliani. During his time as NYC's mayor, he promoted and signed a bill to open a shelter in each borough as well as encourage spaying and neutering in efforts to curb the city's pet overpopulation. He's also the first Republican candidate to release a public statement on animal issues, and promising to continue to support education efforts, enforce animal protection laws already on the books, and to advocate for new animal-friendly policies
John McCain. In addition to cosponsoring bills to stop horse slaughter and to eliminate a $2 million subsidy for the mink industry, as a senator he has been a leader in the effort to stop global warming, and opposes drilling for oil in the animal-filled Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Hillary Rodham Clinton. Senator Clinton has cosponsored legislation to stop the processing of “downer” livestock and to crack down on abusive puppy mills where dogs are treated like production machines and has led efforts to stop the overuse of antibiotics in farm animals, which allow them to be crammed in overcrowded, stressful, unsanitary conditions on factory farms.
Dennis Kucinich. He's currently a co-sponsor of 14 animal protection measures in the 110th Congress and, in the past, has led efforts to secure more funding for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act at puppy mills, research laboratories, zoos, circuses, and other facilities. In November, he even hosted an online forum to discuss animal issues.
Barack Obama. In addition to voting to end the federal funding of horse slaughter in 2005, he's currently a co-sponsor of measures to stop horse slaughter and to upgrade the penalties for dogfighting and cockfighting, both possessing fighting animals and being a spectator at such events.

Should Chelsea Have Answered the Kids Questions?

Presidential candidates are all about the future, but what about their kids who are the next generation? When Scholastic News student reporters questioned the candidate's children, their inquires were welcomed by most from Cate Edwards to Tagg Romney. But former White House daughter, Chelsea Clinton was tight lipped.

A recent Associated Press article said:

"Fifth-grader Kyle Nowak of Nevada met Chelsea Clinton, the former first lady's daughter, at a campaign event for her mother in Las Vegas. While she did not answer questions, she signed a page in his notebook, "To Kyle, Support Hillary!"

And, the piece said Chelsea denied a nine-year-old's question at another campaign event. It said:

"I'm sorry, I don't talk to the press and that applies to you, unfortunately. Even though I think you're cute," she told the Scholastic News' student reporter.

Baby Bait For Presidential Candidates

One of the Presidential candidates will be the future leader of our country, but would you trust them to hold your babe? One dad did.

Darren Garnick, father of two, recants his experience hitting the campaign trail for pictures of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, John Edwards, Rudy Giuliani, Dennis Kucinich, Bill Richardson and Mitt Romney with his 5-month-old daughter, Dahlia in a recent Slate article. He wrote:

"As a resident of the "Live Free or Die" state, I'll concede that the New Hampshire presidential primary gives us ridiculously disproportionate influence. But I love the fact that my state's electoral power comes with a great fringe benefit: It's easy to enshrine the next president in your family scrapbook. A sucker for political kitsch, I set out to photograph my 5-month-old daughter, Dahlia, in the arms of every candidate with a prayer of making it to the White House."

The quest for photographs took Garnick from a parade to a private party and a sporting goods shop to a bookstore. But, he is no novice when it comes to getting political figures to say cheese with his lil ones. He admitted:

"During the 2004 presidential race, I took a few photos of my then 2-year-old boy, Ari, with Democrats Howard Dean, Joe Lieberman, and Wesley Clark. As a first-time parent, I was overly protective and had most of the candidates pose next to his stroller."

Presidential Candidates on Idol Gives Back, Tonight!

Three wanna be American Idols will go on national TV tonight, trying to impress Americans in an attempt to get the most votes. I'm not talking talented singers, but rather the final three presidential candidates. I wonder if Ryan Seacrest is available to host Democratic debate #537?

Hillary Clinton, John McCain, and Barack Obama will appear on tonight's "Idol Gives Back" special, in a blatant attempt to look cool, I mean, raise money for charity. Are you excited to see the candidates at a fund raiser with Victoria and David Beckham, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, Alicia Keys, Celine Dion . . . ? Oh, and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will be there, too.

But it turns out that the American Idol charity might not be "giving back" all it claims to be. To see the case of the missing millions, read more.

The charity has yet to specify where it spent the $76 million raised last year.

In fact, some $5 million remains undistributed. Dr. Irwin Redlener, the president and a co-founder (with the musician Paul Simon) of the Children’s Health Fund says, “sometimes celebrity or entertainment industry-based charities might not be the most sophisticated organizations in distributing the money they raise.”

Your Two Cents: Do You Care About Our President's Net Worth?

When I first came across this CNN article "Millionaires-in-Chief" I felt like I was reading something I shouldn't - like when someone instant messages you about yourself. It outlines each presidential candidates' net worth, how they got rich, and how their money is invested. I'll admit, I found myself caring more and more as I scrolled through the candidates' net-worth profiles.

They're all loaded. The figures shouldn't be too surprising considering most of their old-money families, but they're still difficult to absorb - especially the one who is worth more than $200 million! Would you have guessed that it's Mitt Romney?!

What Secret Service Code Name Would You Give Your Kid?

The Obama girls' Secret Service code names have been revealed as falling in line with the long presidential family tradition of having monikers that start with the same letter. Barack and Michelle's older daughter, Malia, 10, is Radiance and her sister, Sasha, 7, is Rosebud. It's not clear what, if any, rhyme or reason there is behind the names, but if you were moving to the White House, what would be fitting code names for your children?

The Obama Girls Will Get Presidential Perks, But at a Price

Malia and Sasha Obama have already been promised a puppy by their president-elect papa, Barack, and as America's first daughters, we're sure many luxuries will be afforded to them. But every slumber party thrown at the White House comes with a price says a recent CNN article - the girls will grow up in the public eye and under the watch of their parents and the Secret Service. The piece discussed the media scrutiny and antics that long haunted past presidential kids. To see what they are known for, read more. It said:

Theodore Roosevelt's children used to like to drop water balloons on foreign dignitaries, Wead said. They also let their pet snake slither around the White House dining room.

John F. Kennedy Jr. was known for hiding under his father's Oval Office desk. His older sister, Caroline, had a pony who romped untethered around the White House grounds.

President Abraham Lincoln's youngest son, Thomas, used to startle everyone in the building by making all the White House bells ring at one time.

These tidbits make me think the walls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are alive with childhood history.
