Romney Wins Conservative Straw Poll - How Would You Vote?

If you're still going through presidential election withdrawal, here's a little something to chew on before the 2012 campaign. Conservatives have picked Mitt Romney as their number one choice for Republican nominee in 2012. Mitt won 20 percent of the vote in the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) straw poll.

Despite his apparent front-runner status, Mitt could still have a tough time during the Republican primaries. In the straw poll, Bobby Jindal wasn't far behind with 14 percent, and both Sarah Palin and Ron Paul came through with 13 percent of the votes. Newt Gingrich got 10 percent, and Mike Huckabee received 7 percent.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of. . . Pennsylvania?" It seems that way anymore, with all attention being lavished upon that holy grail of voter, the Swing Voter. Because like it or lump it, the Electoral College system means the presidential race is decided really by 15ish states - those with the big enough electoral "score" to make a difference in the race to the magic winning number of 270. PA's hefty score makes those votes more attractive and potentially a bigger deal than others.

Want to find out how "swingy" your own vote is? Slate has put together this handy calculator to figure out that very thing. Slot in six easy facts about you and see both your "pull" and swing factor. The tool weights the state you're voting in higher than any other factor, and then adds in key demographics about race and education, finishing off with how many people there are like you in your state. The guts of the calculator are based purely on polls, so it is only a close facsimile of voter behavior - but with a week left, if the needle points sharply to one side or the other when you put in your info, clear off the sofa. You can bet one of the campaigns will be paying you a visit.

Do You Think the Economy Is More Important Than Terrorism?

More Americans care about a presidential candidate's ability to address the economy than the candidate's ability to confront terrorism. A new Gallup poll asked respondents whether they would be more likely to choose a candidate whose greatest strength is fixing the economy or a candidate whose greatest strength is protecting the country from terrorism.

Fifty-six percent chose the economically-strong candidate, compared to 39 percent who chose the candidate who is best at protecting America from terrorism. Despite these numbers, McCain's senior adviser Charlie Black thinks McCain's perceived strength on national security could help him win - he said a terrorist attack on US soil would be be a "big advantage" for his candidate. Perhaps Black thinks Americans would quickly move fighting terrorism to the top of their priority list, but it's still unclear how a nightmare like an attack would play out politically, something I don't want to hypothesize.

Right now, what do you want to be a candidate's top strength: improving the economy, or fighting terrorism?

Do Supreme Court Justices Have Their Own Political Agendas?

Sixty percent of voters believe the justices on the US Supreme Court have their own political agendas, according to a recent Rasmussen Reports poll. Only 23 percent of participants think the Court's members are impartial.

Presidential candidates seem to agree that the Supreme Court is political. John McCain said that the dangerous decision to grant Guantanamo Bay detainees habeas corpus stressed the importance of electing him to appoint conservative judges. Barack Obama argued the exact opposite - that the fragile majority must be protected.

While it's impossible to expect any person to be completely impartial, the notion of a political agenda implies that (at least internally) articulated policy goals would primarily inform how a justice decides a case. In other words, an agenda suggests that justices would put political interest, before legal principles. It seems bothersome if undemocratically elected and lifetime appointed government officials are motivated by politics. And don't forget - you don't have to be an "activist judge" to have an agenda; strict construction furthers somebody's policy goals, too.

Obama to "Seal" His Fate By Stealing the Seal? Slick or Sorry?

What, haven't heard people chanting "Vero Possumus" lately? How about the non-Latin translation, "Yes, we can." The Obama campaign rolled out a snazzy new logo at a round table meeting with 16 of the nation's Democratic governors on Friday, that inspired one big question: "Did I sleep through the last seven months and Obama is president already?"

The logo is a dead ringer for the presidential seal, (note the Vero Possumus switch) right down to the cargo the eagle is toting (though I haven't seen any website plugs on the real deal. . . ) The stolen seal has quite a few dishing about the audacity of the swipe.

On MSNBC Pat Buchanan unleashed on the make believe seal saying, "It is too cute by half. It's a knock-off, it's a rip-off, it's a counterfeit. . . they oughta get rid of that nonsense and they're going to be mocked and ridiculed until they do."

A Republican National Committee spokesman said, “Unfortunately for Barack Obama, props won’t seal the deal with the American people. Obama will be judged on his record not oversized, make-believe presidential logos.”

The Obama camp defended the decoration saying, "We've used different design elements at different events, this worked well for this event."

Is this clever graphic design, or a disrespectful (possibly illegal?) game of campaign make-believe?

Would You Take Back Your 2004 Vote?

A scant 30 days stand between now and Election Day, but there's still time to change your mind about who to vote for. But I'm dying to know whether or not you would change the vote you cast four years ago. Since hindsight is 20-20, tell me, are you happy with the person you wanted to be president these last four years, or do you have voter's remorse?

If your answer is "yes," I'd love to know what made you make that shift. Was it one specific event? What are you doing to make sure your 2008 vote is a keeper?
