An Ode to Movie Proms

My TV prom slideshow put me in the mood for even more prom fun - this time in the movies. Often the prom is the setting for a climactic moment, whether climatically romantic or, well, the climactic moment when everyone dies. Either way, watching these scenes can be cathartic, depending on your own personal experience with the teenage ritual. Ready to see some of my favorite movie proms?

Look Book Love: Forever 21, Prom '09

My prom was eons ago but there's no harm in reminiscing. Won't you join me? Helping us conjure up fond memories is Forever 21's adorable Prom '09 Look Book. Seeing these teenage girls and guys in their flirty getups makes me wish prom never ended. If I could go back, I would definitely do a few things differently, like wear a short dress and take pictures at a beachside amusement park. Why didn't I think of that back then? Viva prom!

In Praise of the TV Prom

Many of you felt my pain when it came to this week's episode of Gossip Girl. Thanks to the Lily flashbacks, just a few Upper East Side prom scenes got squeezed in between trips back to '80s LA - and that means an entire generation of GG fans got cheated out of the kind of episode that can be the highlight of a teen TV show's lifespan. So I've gathered up some memories of favorite proms from TV shows past. It won't fill the void left by GG, but it might help.

Pretty and Cheap - Proms Get a Budget-Friendly Makeover

Though Cinderella might have been the quintessential rags-to-riches story ending in a lavish ball, the current mean-stepmother economic reality has many prom-goers tightening their cummerbunds, and embracing a cheap and charming alternative.

It hasn't been uncommon for modern teens to spend anywhere between seven hundred and a thousand dollars on just the prom dress - a lavish spectacle egged on by shows like MTV's My Super Sweet Sixteen - but as more and more families are finding it harder just to pay rising fuel and food costs, the clock is striking midnight on luxuries like pricey prom-wear. Several foundations offer lower cost ball gown alternatives, like the Chicago-based Glass Slipper Project. There's big demand for their rainbow of donated dresses that go to those who can't afford first hand gowns. (Not to mention that the reuse has a positive impact on the environment as well as wallets.) San Francisco’s Princess Project is also seeing a big surge in the numbers of people seeking low cost prom dresses. Yvette Nichols, board president said: “Girls are traveling two hours, just to come and find a dress.”

Historically teens might have been embarrassed to shop second-hand for such a milestone outfit in an American adolescent’s life, but many are finding this situation as a nice break from the pressure of spending more than your peers. The penny-pinching is having a positive effect on budding values systems. A senior at a high school in Arizona said: "It is kind of a bragging thing. . . to spend $300 on a dress, but for me, it’s almost embarrassing to spend that much.”

Are the leaner economic times inspiring a return to sanity? Could this be the reality check that's just the antidote to an out of control consumer culture? Will organizations like this make it trendy to be thrifty?

Teeny Prom Dress Earns Girl Accessories: Handcuffs. Fair?

Prom night in Houston brought out the corsages - and the controversy. One high school senior came decked out in a dress that school officials thought was less than suitable. Yellow criss-crosses of fabric made up the top portion of her custom-made frock. She said, "I actually like the dress. Everybody else likes my dress." The dress code did not approve.

She was stopped at the door by a school official. The hopeful prom-goer said, "she shook her head, she was like you are not getting into this prom. We were arguing back and forth because I wanted to know why I can't get into my prom.” The dance of wills escalated from there. Even after offering cover up, she was still denied entrance.

The school principal said, “It was revealing in such nature it was not appropriate for the prom." The student became furious and demanded entrance or a refund - the next thing she knew, the cops had been called and the tiny dancer was chauffeured away in a squad car. She says, "They didn't give me any options, but to go to jail or go home."

Even the morning after, she still loves her prom dress. Was the school out of line? Should she have been allowed to cover up and dance? Was the dress and resulting argument too hot for high school?

Buzz In: Did You Have A Prom Song?

The horror remake Prom Night, opening this weekend, doesn't look like the kind of movie I'd love, but it did get me thinking about my own prom (which was, thankfully, free of blood and guts). There was a vague Dirty Dancing theme to mine, and the prom song was "I've Had the Time of My Life," which seemed a little presumptuous to me. As Rayanne from My So-Called Life would say, I had a time, but I certainly wouldn't call it the time of my life. Anyway, this led me to wonder: Did other people have a prom song? And did it in any way influence the prom experience?

Conducting an informal little office poll, I got a pretty garden variety of high school dance standards, like "Wonderful Tonight," "Lady in Red," "We Are Family," and "Oh, What a Night." Then there was the girl who, lacking a prom song, decided with her friends that their song for the night would be "Ghetto Superstar."

What about you? Did your prom have a song? Did you like it? Hate it? Skip prom altogether?

It's Pop Culture Prom Week

Break out the wrist corsages and sparkly tiaras - it's prom week! Yes, I know it's only January, but the pop culture universe has brought everyone's favorite spring formal back this week, big time. Consider:

We kicked off the week with the new trailer for Prom Night, the remake of the '80s horror flick that makes your own prom night, no matter how heinous, seem tame.
Then, NBC Entertainment Co-Chair Ben Silverman invoked the memory of the formal in an interview with E! when NBC was still angling to keep the Golden Globes on the air, saying: "Sadly, it feels like the nerdiest, ugliest, meanest kids in the high school are trying to cancel the prom. But NBC wants to try to keep that prom alive." The ugly, mean, nerdy writers then retaliated by promising to throw Silverman the prom of his dreams outside NBC next week.
And finally, in what can only be described as perfect timing, Project Runway went to prom, too, trotting out a parade of candy-colored gowns for 17-year-old aspiring goddesses. The dresses were just the second-best part of the episode, though, next to the prom photo flashbacks to the designers' awkward years.

I'm not sure what caused this sudden prom frenzy, but - just like real prom - I'm fretting less about that and more about whether anyone will ask me to the dance. Think Michael Cera would be my date?
