Eyeshadow 101: Today's Theme is Purple

The makeup counters at department stores and the cosmetics aisle at Walgreens can be pretty overwhelming. It's super hard to know which colors to try and which ones go together. I thought I would try to help with this installment of Eyeshadow 101.

The goal of wearing eye make-up is to enhance/bring attention to your eyes. The rule of thumb is to wear the opposite color eye shadow of your eyes on the color wheel so that your eyes really stand out (or POP as they say in the make-up world).

So if you have blue eyes, you'd wear rust, coral, peach or grayish colors; if you have brown eyes, wear greens and bronzes, and if you have green/hazel (gold/yellowy) eyes, try wearing either greens, or deep purples, pinks, and rusty purples.

If you have greenish-hazel eyes, I'd go with MAC's Sable eye shadow. It is an amazing muted, golden plum brown everyday color with bronze shimmer. First apply a light pink color to the base of your lids - try Trish McEvoy's Deluxe Eye Shadow in Shell, then add a touch of the sable to the crease.

Lastly, line your eyes with Mac's Sketch Colored Eye Shadow. It's the mac daddy (no pun intended) of purples. The color is an intense burgundy-plum flecked with red shimmer.

Another great idea which I've just discovered that is really simple and great for travel because it's packaged together is glowmineral's gloEye shadow trio in Amethyst.

Or Dior's 5-Colour Eyeshadow in Sweet Illusion.

Be careful when using purples, because if you go overboard, your eyes will look bloodshot. So dust some loose powder on the corners of your eye, and directly beneath your lower lash when you are finished applying your shadow.

All Aboard! The Nars 2009 Autumn Colour Collection Is Here

Not only does this year mark the 15th anniversary for Nars Cosmetics, but last Monday was the highly anticipated launch of the brand new six-item Autumn 2009 Colour Collection. The inspiration behind the goodies came from none other than the young and precocious icon, Lolita. François Nars was "looking for a model who could represent the modern, independent woman, but who also had a girlish, innocence about her."

It's funny, because I thought the ad campaign doll looking model was Lily Donaldson, but it's actually a Canadian beauty named Heather Marks whose career began in 2003 with Givenchy. The photographs were taken in New York City by François Nars himself, and Heather is wearing the products from the '09 line whose names incidentally were influenced by Nars' pursuits and interests, yet they don't necessarily have any direct correlation to Lolita.

My favourite product is a nail varnish called Tokaido Express (£12.50). From a distance it looks black, but up close it's a purple shade with gold flecks that look rich, exciting and ridiculously chic. Wearing this polish is akin to wearing a fabulous cuff or statement piece.

Fast Ride Lipstick: (£17) is an edgy, dark mulberry (and totally intimidating lipstick) that falls somewhere between an intense stain, and a gothy purple. What I love is its that the sheen keeps it looking fashion forward and seductive.
Mekong Single Eyeshadow: (£15) is a must for those with green or hazel eyes. The black-brown shadow contains rose gold flecks that make green eyes pop!
Silk Road Duo Eyeshadow: (£23) is a new pair of powder shadows that were influenced from traditional damask fabrics. One side houses a frosty pink whilst the other side is a rosey gold with golden shimmer.
Brumes Duo Eyeshadow: (£23) is another new powder shadow duo that has a matte charcoal shade one side (great as a liner or for the ultimate smoky eye) and the other side is a sparkly sky blue hue.
Indian Summer Duo Eyeshadow: (£23) is the most fashion forward of the eyeshadow pairs. Inside there's a frosted khaki shade beside a bold, matte, mustardy colour.
Tokaido Express Nail Polish: (£12.50) is black-plum varnish enhanced with finely milled gold sparkles and is named after Japan’s famed high-speed railway. From afar you'd think it's black, if you look a little bit closer, it's far more interesting!

Love It or Hate It? Jennifer Lopez's Purple Reign

Jennifer Lopez looked simply stunning as she attended Fashion Group International's 25th Annual Night of the Stars at Cipriani in New York this week. The superstar went for Grecian-inspired hair with a glossy roll piled high on the crown. A pulled back style, plus extra height suits J-Lo, perhaps because she always emits such an elegant air.

Although I love her classic camel and metallic makeup, it's always nice to see Jennifer experimenting with colour. Lilac shadow bought out the sparkle in her brown eyes, although those lashes must be fakes, surely. A touch of creamy blush in a coral shade plus glossy nude lips made for a beautiful affair.

Three Makeup Colors That Look Great on Almost Everyone

I recently had the opportunity to chat with Yves St. Laurent national makeup artist, Dell Ashley, at the San Francisco Saks 5th Avenue cosmetics counter. Thanks to his expertise, I'll be sharing some of his best tips and tricks for accentuating your beauty over the next few weeks. Let's start off with three makeup shades that he says look great on practically everybody. (Don't worry if you can't swing the cost of YSL's luxe products. You can always try similar shades at the drugstore if you're on a budget.)

A mauve-pink lipstick: Not too pink, not too purple, and not too brown, YSL's Pure Lipstick in #66 Rosewood ($30) is naturally flattering. "I have yet to put it on a person that didn't like it," Ashley says.
A glowing peachy blush: "For summertime, a peachy color is always pretty. It's going to give you a nice glow without looking heavy," he explains. YSL's Blush Variation in #18 Coral Sand ($44) combines both a matte and iridescent finish to create a complementary subtle peachy-pink shade with slightly golden undertones.
A champagne shadow: A perfectly balanced shade, YSL's Water Resistant Cream Eyeshadow in #1 Pink Sands ($28.50) is a soft, slightly shimmery pink that lends a subtle glow.

I can't say that I've been to a real, official afternoon tea in the garden. I can't say that I've even officially been to an afternoon tea - that is, unless you count my friend's baby shower in Ohio, where it was snowing outside, but we still enjoyed bite-sized treats like mini cucumber sandwiches and clotted cream in the comfort of indoors. Trend Alert: Bright Lights, Bold Colour

This is the sumer of bright, bold colours and look-at-me makeup. Think peacock blue, cream eyeshadow, with cerise cheeks and raspberry lips.

At the Haute Couture shows, makeup artists were like magpies for the bright stuff – there were red berry lips at Valentino, lime and yellow eyeshadow at Dior and painted-ladies with purple eyes and bright red lips at Christian Lacroix. A sign that sizzling shades are here to stay.

Here's my top five bright products to get you started – just don't wear them all at once!

Mavala, (£3.75), nail polish in Romantic. A bold, coral pink that looks good on toes.
Maybelline Dream Mousse Eye Shadow, (£5.99), in Fabulous Turquoise. This is one of the best cream shadows around. Very long-lasting too.

Lancome Juicy Tube,(£9.50), in Fraise. A sticky, sweet lip gloss with an orangey-peach colour. Young and fun.
Revlon Renewist Lip Colour, in Cherry Desirable. A special moisture-boosting formula and SPF 15 make this a great colour buy.
MAC nail polish in Phosphor, (£8), a bumble bee yellow with a slight lime sparkle. Slightly putrid, very Dior Haute Couture.
Rimmel Colour Rush Eyeshadow, (£3.99), in Intense. A very deep, moody purple, as at Lacroix. Intense!

How-To: Wear a Raspberry Lip Like Gwyneth

Gwyneth Paltrow was recently out and about in London attending a children's charity event. Singer Pink just wore a similar shade, too. Do I sense a trend here?

Of her Spring 2008 raspberry collection, Bobbi Brown said, “Raspberry is a brilliant way to wear color. It brings out the natural flush of pink on cheeks. There’s a shade of raspberry for every complexion - from pink to deep raspberry."

Looking for tips on how to make this flattering look work? Check out some of my razzley-dazzley suggestions when you read more.

For a radiant evening look, try a shimmery light gray or silvery-blue shadow such as, Bare Escentuals Glimmer in 2000 ($13), a silver blue or Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Vapor ($16), a very light shimmery gray.
For a more daytime look, try a matte gray or light lavender shadow. I like Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Revolver ($16), a stone gray or Aveda Petal Essence Eye Color in Aura ($12), a soft purple taupe shade with just a whisper of glimmer.
Coordinate cheek color with a soft raspberry blush. Try Almay Touchpad Blush in Raspberry ($9.26).
To make your raspberry lipstick or lip gloss last, first line your lips in a similar hue, such as Almay Ideal Lipliner Pencil in Raspberry ($7.49).

How-To: Leighton Meester's Cool-Toned Makeup

On Sunday, actress Leighton Meester attended the Henri Bendel and YSL Beaute celebration of Gossip Girl, season 2. Leighton keeps her look in the purple color family - and I can't help but love how her light lilac eyeshadow and soft magenta lips complement the color of her dress. The addition of a sun-kissed bronzer and a small burst of turquoise in her earrings complete this cool-toned look.

For a complete how-to, check out my suggestions below:

FACE: Keep the foundation light and illuminating with a tinted moisturizer such as Stila's Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer ($32). To play up the bright-eye area, try a highlighter like Smashbox's Photo Op Under Eye Brightener ($18).
CHEEKS: To achieve a rosy-bronzed look, try a bronzing duo. Use the brown shade to create depth on the cheeks, forehead, and above the brows; and the rosy pink shade on top to create a fresh flush. Try Laura Mercier's Bronzing Duo ($32) in Pink Bronze.
EYES: For your liner, try a rich chocolate brown like CoverGirl's Brow & Eye Makers Brow Shaper and Eyeliner ($3) in Midnight Brown. Lightly line the entire lower lash line. For the top lash line, only line the outer corners, keeping the inner corners free for the application of shadow. For the shadows, I like Vincent Longo's Eyeshadow Trio - One, Two, Three ($30) in Autumn Rhythm, which comes with three shades: pinkish lavender, warm lavender, and warm eggplant purple. Sweep the lightest shade of lavender on your lids. Next, blend the deeper shades together in the crease area, concentrating on the outer lids for depth.
LIPS: For glossy lips with a light magenta pink tone, try Shiseido's The Makeup Automatic Lip Crayon ($22) in LC10.
