Pop Watch: Pushing Daisies, Episode 9 "Corpsicle"

After the short season of Dirty Sexy Money ended last week with episode 10, sadly this week's ninth episode of Pushing Daisies is also the season finale, due to all that striking the writers' did last year. But fear not, if you need another Daisies fix, those nice people at ITV have also decided to put the episode that they missed out (episode 2 aka "Dummy") online, so you can watch it here! But for now, here's my thoughts on last night's episode:

For its final episode this series, the show left on a high note – with a great balance between drama and giggle-inducing cleverness.

I was so happy to return to Young Ned's Play-Doh world. It set the tone perfectly for the episode, which was oh-so-cute and yet oh-so-heartstring-tugging - from the aunts comforting Ned and Chuck on the day they both lost their parents to Lily's drug-induced revelation at the end.

For more of my thoughts and to leave your own, just read more

Lily is Chuck's mum? Whoa! I'm glad there's something tying the aunts (er, mum-and-aunt duo) tighter into the series, but I totally was not expecting this.

Does that explain Lily's caustic nature - I mean, "motherly" wouldn't come to mind - I wonder how much of that is due to losing her only daughter. Also, does Vivian know? Chuck certainly doesn't seem to.

Oh, and poor Chuck. She's usually so chipper, but she was really down in this episode - no surprise, given that she'd just learned her soulmate killed her dad. She came so close to letting Oscar know her secret, but she pulled back, so now the only person who knows is Olive, who thinks the whole "I was dead" thing was just a way for Chuck to stop talking.

It would be easy to skip over the Corpse of the Week, but the case offered some comic relief in a heavy episode. It must have been fun for the writers, who usually work with such cheery material, to create the character of miserable little Abner ("I said lap dance, not tap dance!").

And Emerson has a daughter! Yet another new secret.

As much as I loved Emerson and Ned's exchange with the coroner in his holiday jumper, Emerson's line was my favourite: "And you slipped in word vomit and fell on your ass and now you're covered in word vomit."

Oscar calling a bludgeoning "a unique sensory experience" was super creepy. I hope he's back when the show returns.

So, now I want to hear from you – do you think it was the right call for Ned not to wake up Chuck's father? Could Lily's revelation be just a hallucinatory rant? And how will you cope with that cliffhanger? I already want this show back! Don't forget to <a href="check out episode 2 online and let me know what you think of that one too!

Pop Watch: Pushing Daisies, Episode 5 "Girth"

So it was Halloween episode time on Pushing Daisies last night (a problem we constantly have thanks to the delay in us getting American shows), but I certainly got into the Halloween spirit as the story was perfectly ghostly and mysterious. Here's some of my thoughts:

I was so happy to get an Olive-centric episode. I love her. This time we learned about a big secret from her past, which was perfect timing since she's got what she perceives as Chuck's secret wrapped up in her brain.

The case itself was almost Sleepy Hollow-esque and lended itself well to the fantastical world of Daisies. Loved the horse-shoe imprints on each victim's face, and the bar that Emerson almost got kicked out of because he was 'over 60 inches' tall.

Ned had some ghosts of his own past to put to rest. The revelations about his Dad breaking off almost all contact with Ned and joining a whole new family while he was a child at boarding school was so sad. It took Chuck's aunts telling him what a good man he'd become despite his "jackass" of a father to get him to move on.

To read more of my thoughts from last night's episode, just read more

Emerson's one-liners are always a high point for me, but he was really on form in this episode. A few favourites: "Don't try to think that's a word that anybody knows." "Think of it as an escrow between my thighs." "Different like purple and mauve." Oh and Olive's "I scream, you scream, no one screams when you fake your death!"

I'm enjoying Olive and Chuck's increasing screen time together as they battle for Ned's affections. The scene with Olive bouncing up and down on her bed made me smile - but not as much as Olive finally getting swept off her feet by Ned, only to be dropped as soon as he realized Chuck was around. Poor Olive.

I really laughed when the doorbell rang and Lily said she'd get a shotgun, while Vivian grabbed the candy bowl. It says it all about their personalities.

How cute were young Ned and Digby trick-or-treating in their matching ghost outfits?

Did you love this episode? I think I'm falling in love with this show more and more each week. I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Pop Watch: Pushing Daisies, Ep 3 "The Fun In Funeral"

"What? Where's episode 2?!" I hear you cry... Well, due to some scheduling difficulties, ITV decided to miss out one of my favourite episodes of Pushing Daisies in order to move the story along. They only have space for 8 of the 9 episodes made so far, and number 2 was the one that got the chop. So, sorry about that. But they have promised that they'll schedule it in for some other time, so I'll keep you posted on it... mutter, mutter. If you're wondering what happened in the missing episode 2 check out this recap. Anyway, on with the show, and on with a few of my thoughts...

So this week, Emerson and Ned were looking into the murder of a funeral director. The funeral director who died to let Chuck live. Which totally freaked Ned out... I'm glad they actually dealt with this, as I thought we'd never hear about this guy again!

This led to Chuck finding out about the sacrifice Ned had made to let her live, and gave her an awful lot to mull over.

But it turned out the funeral director was a pretty bad sort anyway, robbing the bodies that entered his workplace of all their expensive worldly goods.... So really it's all OK. The funeral director (Lawrence Schatz) ran the home with his twin brother Louis, who originally wanted to find out who killed him. But Ned's magic touch revealed that Louis had been in on it all along! Tut tut.

I still can't get over how cute Anna Friel is. Cute as a button! I love her.

For more of my thought on this episode, and to share your own with me, just read more

I loved that Emerson Cod immediately fled the funeral home when the coffin got stuck shut with the half-living funeral director inside it. He's so selfish, yet grumpily lovable.

Also agreeing with me this time round – Olive's haircut. She had her own little storyline, as she became involved with Chuck's eccentric aunts – and began to unravel Chuck's trail. Her current theory is that Chuck faked her own death for some "nefarious purpose"... how gleeful she must be! Surely that will mean the piemaker will fall for her instead of Chuck? Bless.

Ahhh, Emerson getting stuck and Chuck referring to him as Winnie The Pooh made me chuckle. Those two definitely have a love/hate relationship, but Chuck is so ridiculously nice I don't think she notices.

Ned's childhood Jedi skills got a good working out in the sword fight. Who knew he was so quick on his feet?

I hope they completely thaw out and clean those pie freezers after Louis Schatz was found dead in there. So unhygienic.

I liked that Chuck's trying to take care of her aunts by baking mood-lifters into the pies. Surely not completely ethical, but if she can't see them, I suppose she has to find a way to cheer them up...

Also, the last joke about getting some saran wrap / cling film to kiss through? That would be explained by the missing second episode in which they kiss through some plastic bags. Not touching. Therefore not killing Chuck for good...

So are you still enjoying this magical series? Did you notice a jump between episodes caused by the missing one? Let me know... I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Pop Watch: Pushing Daisies: Episode 7, "Smell of Success"

We got something a little different this time round on Pushing Daisies: a plot thread not involving our core characters that could continue for more than one episode. Paul (Pee Wee Herman) Reubens turned up as a scent expert who sniffed something odd on Chuck. Will he be back? Here's some of my thoughts on this scent-filled episode:

My favouite moment of this slightly different episode was Aunt Vivian's "Morning Has Broken." I loved the way that scene was put together, from the shadow of the rain hitting Aunt Lily's face to the moment they dove into the pool together. Only a show like this could make that work.

However, this week's show just didn't feel quite sharp enough to me. We're solidly into another phase with the aunts' story, and the rest of the show seems to need an injection of something new as well. Perhaps new character Oscar Vibenius will be the source? Or perhaps Molly Shannon's upcoming appearances?

The case this time around focused on a "nose" who had written a book on making odours work for you and who turned out to be staging near-death experiences for himself in order to get more publicity. That led to some particularly vivid descriptions of scents ("pungent like fried chicken grilled on a bed of hair"), and provided the chance for Olive to coax the aunts back into the pool, thanks to the rejuvenating scent of chlorine.

For more of my thoughts just read more

In one of the sweetest Young Ned segments yet, we learned that Ned became The Piemaker to stay close to his mother after her death. Not a groundbreaking revelation, but it explained why Ned would reject Chuck's cup-pie idea; he wants to stay true to his mom's memory. But he's also madly in love with Chuck (and who wouldn't be, Anna Friel is so adorable), and so in the end, the cup-pies won their spot on the Pie Hole's menu.

He and Chuck were so cute hugging each other by hugging themselves; that may be as "together" as they ever get, but in a moment like that, it's enough.

Emerson usually rules the one-liners, but this episode belonged to the fab Kristen Chenoweth as Olive. From the "is that a rolling pin in your apron" joke to her take on the stages of grief - "something, something, something, acceptance!" - she delivered many of the episode's funniest moments.

Though it was an more understated week for Emerson, his "your book was a bomb" bit was very amusing. As was his enjoyment of "Knit Wit" magazine, for knitting humour...

Until that opening scene with Young Ned, it hadn't ever occurred to me that Ned can't even eat his own pies. That must suck!

Ha! I loved Chuck's "Jews for Cheeses" T-shirt.

I can't wait to hear your thoughts – Would you like to see Vibenius return? And does the show need something new to keep it going, or are you loving it as it is? Let me know!

Pop Watch: Pushing Daisies, Episode 8 " Bitter Sweets"

Wow, that was maybe the most jam-packed Pushing Daisies episode yet. Funny lady Molly Shannon turned up as the owner of a taffy business that was trying to steal the Pie Hole's customers, Ned solved a murder and ended up framed for another, and Olive had a new romantic opportunity - if only she could have recognised it. But my favourite thing about the episode was how much we learned about Ned. Here's some more of my thoughts:

The Young Ned flashback taught us that Ned doesn't retaliate against bullies, as well as reminding us that he has serious intimacy issues. The first came into play in the story with Dilly Balsam; the second put Ned's relationship with Chuck on the rocks when he had to decide whether to finally tell her the truth about her dad's death. I like this more brooding Ned.

The show got its first murder mystery of the night out of the way quickly (the Real Doll did it!), so we could focus on Dilly Balsam's Bittersweets Taffy and Sweets Emporium. The Taffy vs Pie scenes were some of my favourite from the show yet: Ned's sign getting changed to "Pie Ho," the health inspector discovering Ned's pantry of rotten fruit, and Chuck and Olive going all cat burglar on Bittersweets, sneaking in to deposit some rats in the taffy kitchen – "Don't mess with the pie hos!"

For some more of my thoughts and to read your own, just read more

But then Ned was framed for Billy's murder. When Ned stuck his hand in the taffy vat, I figured he'd be pulling out an alive-again, taffy-covered rat; not an alive-again, taffy-covered person. With Ned in jail, Emerson actually had to do some real detective work to find the nine-fingered killer; I liked that we were led to believe it was Dilly because of the big, goofy gloves she wore, as well as the shot of the drowning, fingerless hand.

Ned's stint in jail gave him ample time to resolve not to tell Chuck the truth about her father, but then he blurted it out anyway. I wonder what that does to Chuck's assurances that Ned was her boyfriend; I'm guessing she's not going to take this well.

Oh, Olive. Alfredo loves you! Go with it!

There were a couple of moments this week when a cheesy line made me cringe a little - but then a great follow-up made me regret it. Case in point: "The Piemaker considered how not telling Chuck the truth about her father was a lot like being locked in a prison. Then he considered that being locked in a prison was actually much worse than some silly metaphor about truth."

I loved Ned turning the leaves in the leaf pile from brown to green to brown again. Brilliant!

Also loved Chuck's description of "Hello": "That says: 'I'm here! Your turn to talk! That's kind of selfish."

My favourite Emerson line: "The truth ain't like puppies, a bunch of them running around and you pick your favourite."

I always like Chuck's wardrobe, but her looks this episode were particularly covetable, especially the brown dress with the dots.

Will Chuck be able to forgive Ned? Will Dilly continue to terrorize the Pie Hole? We'll find out next week. Let me know what you thought of this ep!

Pop Watch: Pushing Daisies, Episode 4 "Pigeon"

We're on episode four of Pushing Daisies, and the show's getting more fantastical by the week. I'm really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this latest installment, so make sure you leave some comments after reading some of mine:

Most heartbreaking line of the series so far was from poor Ned – "What's a rooftop full of bees compared to someone who can catch her when she falls?" Bless.

Investigations this week surrounded the reason a crop duster crashed into a luxury apartment, which was far more complicated that it sounded, and Olive pondered what to do about Chuck's secret.

Poor Chuck. She's seemed to be pretty much OK with the no-touching business with Ned, but she didn't hesitate at the chance to hold Lem's hand. Not surprising, I guess – remember her speech about the healing nature of hugs? But it was cause for Ned to get both jealous and worried about their future. What is life without a hand to hold?

I demand more singing in this show – that awesome duet of "Birdhouse in Your Soul" in the back of the car was super-fun!

As always for more of my take on this episode, just read more

Olive and the aunts looked after an "alive again" carrier pigeon aka Pidge ("It's a miracle bird!") who had a message to deliver. Everything eventually converged at a windmill, where it was revealed that the windmill's resident, Elsita, had been keeping up a carrier-pigeon correspondence with Lem that her mother had started with Lem's cellmate. Phew!

I'm still loving Olive, and she got the chance to be both villain and hero this time. She wanted to screw up Chuck's secret - but she's also become close to the aunts on their own, thanks to the pigeon plot and didn't want them to feel shocked or betrayed.

Jayma Mays was brilliant as Elsita in the hostage scene. "You take a hostage like you tie your sneakers." I enjoyed the way she easily scooted out of the bows when Pidge crashed into the window.

Emerson's grumpy nature is still hilarious. As was the (rightfully) suspicious coroner.

How adorable was the beekeeper suit dance? In fact, the entire bee plotline was fab. Chuck: "What happened to the bees that stung you? That's a suicide attack!"

It's been obvious that the show doesn't have the budget it did in the pilot, but I have to say I think this really helps the fantasy elements of the plots. It's all so stylized.

The moment Aunt Lily saw Chuck in the car mirror and the sail of the windmill magically made her disappear gave me chills.

So did you enjoy this week's episode? And who are your favourite characters? I can't wait to hear your thoughts on this lazy Sunday!

Pop Watch: Pushing Daisies, Episode 6 "B*tches"

Oh Pushing Daisies, I love you already, you didn't need to bring in Joel McHale (lovely host of the E!'s The Soup) to make me love you even more!! And puppies! Love it. Here's some of my thoughts:

So, Ned and Chuck finally kissed! Hurrah! Except it was in Ned's dream and Chuck was actually Olive in a Chuck suit. Wow. Ick. And I think that shows where Ned's head is currently at.

He had even more to ponder as polygamy was the name of the game this episode. It was all centred around the murder of Harold Hundin (Joel!), who lets the gang know that "his wife" killed him – only problem, he had four wives. Narrator: "Harold Hundin was, indeed, a damn polygamist."

How cute was young Ned's claymation dream? Poor young Ned.

To read more of my thoughts and to leave your own, just read more

Emerson's description of polygamy – one woman to have, one to hold – certainly hit home for Ned, despite his protests that he'd make a terrible polygamist – "I'm easily distracted; I wouldn't know where to focus".

As compelling as the Chuck/Ned dynamic is, though, I got more of a kick out of Emerson's feelings for Harry's stern ex-wife, Simone. Clearly, there was no love lost between Simone and Harry, though Emerson somehow got charmed by Simone – despite her OCD habits and her tendency to chloroform others to get her way.

Loved Olive's comment on Ned and Chuck not touching: "That's the most tragic story I've ever heard, notwithstanding the big-ticket items like genocide and famine." Well said.

The alive-again part of things got a new dimension this week, as Ned brought Snuppy back to life during the funeral to see which of the wives would freak out. Loved the shot of the re-dead Snuppy crumpling to the ground, then Ned asking Emerson to "take care of that."

My favourite Emerson quips: "I suppose I could pay my bills with blind kids' smiles, but taking their money seems a lot easier." As well as, whilst Ned and Chuck were getting lovey-dovey again, "Why'd I always have to be around for this stuff?"

How perfect that Simone had apparently taught Bubblegum the command "go hide!"

I loved the wives' outfits. Just another pretty thing to look at in this beautiful series!

Also loved: Digby covering his eyes during Ned's sexy dream, the pew of mourning dogs and Emerson's drug-induced dream. Giggle-inducing.

I'm starting to think this show is baked with mood-enhancers as I'm always smiling by the time the credits roll. What did you think of the episode? I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Pop Watch: Pushing Daisies, Episode 1 "Pie-Lette"

Well, ITV brought us another new American show to enjoy last night, this time starring an actress of our own – the gorgeous Anna Friel. Pushing Daisies started last night in all its whimsical, quirky glory, and I'd love to know what you thought about it. First, though, here's what I thought of last night's show:

First of all, I want to live in their over-saturated fantasy world. Everything just pops with shiny colour there. Could the skies be bluer? The colours brighter? It's so ridiculously pretty to look at, and feels so different to any other show currently out there.

English actor Jim Dale narrates the tales, and his voice is lovely and soothing. He definitely adds to the fairytale element of the show.

But onto the premise – so Ned can bring dead things and people back to life. However when he brings his mother back to life and his childhood crush Chuck’s dad dies almost immediately afterwards he realizes there are consequences. He can only bring people back to life for a minute, otherwise someone else dies. When his mother kisses him, she loses her life once more. So his first touch brings life, and his second touch brings death, again, forever.

For more of my thoughts on last night's episode, just read more

I've never been a pie fan. But those pies that Ned makes look stunning... delish!

It's lovely to see Kristin Chenoweth in this show, she plays Olive Snook – the waitress in love with the piemaker. She’s so pocket-sized, especially next to the rather tall Lee Pace who plays Ned.

So, Emerson Cod's the only one who knows Ned's abilities. His cynical Private Investigator character added a little edge to the sugar-sweet show. He's teamed up with the piemaker to solve murders for good (and it’s easier to cash in on reward money when you can ask the victim who killed them).

Last night, Ned's childhood sweetheart Chuck was murdered on a cruise, so Emerson and Ned went off to try and find out who did it by bringing her back. But when it came to putting her back to sleep again he just couldn’t. And who can blame him, it’s lovely Anna Friel for goodness’ sake! So the funeral director died instead.

Chuck has two Aunts – Lily and Vivian – with personality disorders/social phobias. She's looked after them their entire lives – what a golden girl she is. All wide-eyed and sparkly sweet. I'd love to nosy around their house, that set is fantastic!

I loved the line Chuck delivered when she learned she couldn't hug Ned, “A hug is an emotional Heimlich”. How can you go through life without hugging? Poor Chuck and Ned.

This show reveals so much in its details - the goofy picture of Chuck that the newsreaders showed when talking about her death; the scratching contraption that Ned uses to pet his dog; the eye patch that kept Aunt Lily from realizing that Chuck was alive again. That was fab.

Ned and Chuck found other ways to show their affection with one another – the monkeys, the hand holding behind their backs… they're both too cute.

So what did you think – are you looking forward to next week's episode? Or was all the sweetness too much to take?

Photos copyright 2007 ABC, Inc.

The Vampire Diaries "Haunted": The Good, The Bad and The Bloody

Sorry for the hyperbole, but I'm pretty sure this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries, "Haunted," is the best one of the season so far. The Halloween setting is perfect for playing out Vicki's vampiric transition, Bonnie's exploration of her mysterious genealogical history, and the exposing of "The Council."

There's plenty to talk about, so let's chat about the good, the bad, and the bloody (spoilers aplenty ahead!) when you read more.

The Good

So much is good this week, but the episode belongs to Vicki, who's having issues turning into a vamp - which also provides us with more exposition on the mythology of The Vampire Diaries as well as Stefan's personal journey as a bloodsucker. However, Vicki isn't long for even the undead world, and her story ends both abruptly and shockingly (more on that later).

I love this show's balance of humor and intrigue, which Damon and The Council storyline provides this week. Damon overhears Tyler's parents, the Lockwoods, discussing the search they're on, just after he's noticed that Logan's murder hasn't shown up in the papers. I loved the tête-à-tête between Damon and Mrs. Lockwood at the restaurant; it doesn't take much booze to get the woman blabbing, and soon Damon knows that she's trying to procure vervain (which I finally googled; apparently it's a variant of verbena) and that she not only knows about the vampires in town, she's hunting them.

I want to know more about Bonnie, and her glamorous, witchy Grams. I still can't believe Whitley is playing someone's grandmother. Aside from having the scoop on the family and being a witch herself, she teaches Occult at the University. How cool is she? Oh, and Bonnie's great-great-great-great grandmother, Emily Bennett? We've seen her before.

I've said it a couple times recently, but I love a good Halloween episode. The costumes are priceless: Vicki goes as a vampire, Tyler's a character from 300, and Mrs. Lockwood channels Daisy Buchanan, someone Damon would certainly recognize.

The Bad

Not much bad to report this week, except for one gripe. Coffee as a vampire's secret to blending in with humans? Pretty silly. "It's the caffeine," Stefan says with a straight face. At least he didn't complain about Starbucks.

The Bloody

The Hunger rules Vicki's life as a vampire, and all she wants to do is feed . . . and see Jeremy and Matt. First she takes a love bite out of Jeremy's lip, and then, in a desperate fight, chomps right into Elena's exposed shoulder (so that's why she needed a sexy costume). Her attack on Elena pushes Stefan to stake her, killing her immediately. I literally gasped, then held my mouth open for a good five minutes as I watched this all play out. I'm still pretty stunned.

Lastly, are we witnessing Damon's evolution? His encounters with Elena this week take a major detour; she lashes out at him for being responsible for Vicki, Jeremy being in danger, and finally, Vicki's death, angering him until he tells her, "You need to leave." This would normally be a threat from Damon, but there's another dimension to it; is the man who insists he'd kill anyone, anytime, telling Elena to go because he wants her to be safe? Is he forming feelings for her? The climax of this really occurs in the final moments, when Elena begs Stefan to erase Jeremy's memory. Explaining that his human-free diet won't allow him to do it correctly, we hear a voice volunteer. "I can do it." It's almost seductive, and Elena lets him - though she doesn't say thank you, on principle, but I felt like she wanted to.

What do you think - were you surprised to see Vicki exit so soon? I was hoping to see more of her development as a vampire, but her death evoked so much more of an emotional reaction from the characters (and me) that I can't imagine it another way. And if you want to talk more about the show, join Hooked on Vampire Diaries in the Buzz Community!
