Movie Preview: The Hurt Locker

All of a sudden, I really want to see The Hurt Locker. For one thing, this movie is getting incredibly positive reviews, with most critics noting that this may be the first movie about the Iraq war that audiences will actually enjoy. For another, it sounds suspenseful and action-packed - like, blow-your-mind-and-your-eardrums style. And for a third, it's already gotten some recognition before it even hits theaters in the form of two Independent Spirit Awards nominations. Here's a description:

[The Hurt Locker is] an intense portrayal of elite soldiers who have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world: disarming bombs in the heat of combat. When a new sergeant, James, takes over a highly trained bomb disposal team amidst violent conflict, he surprises his two subordinates, Sanborn and Eldridge, by recklessly plunging them into a deadly game of urban combat.

The movie stars Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie and also features Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse, and Evangeline Lilly. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break), The Hurt Locker opens in New York and LA today and will hit another group of cities July 10. Sun and Snow: All In A Weekend At Cannes!

This morning brought a snowstorm to the Cannes Film Festival as Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn, Jim Carrey (along with Jenny McCarthy) promoted their new version of A Christmas Carol, with Jim getting into a "snowball" fight with photographers! Meanwhile over the weekend, there were plenty of red carpet premieres including Taking Woodstock, Agora and Vengeance with stars including Rachel Weisz, Michelle Yeoh, Evangeline Lilly, Max Minghella, Emile Hirsch, Demitri Martin, Monica Belluci, and Tilda Swinton. Meanwhile the weekend's parties and social events attracted Paris Hilton, Peaches Geldof, Ryan Phillippe and Abbie Cornish, VV Brown, Deborah Harry, Olivia Palermo and many more.

Sugar Bits - Phil Spector Found Guilty of Murder

A Los Angeles jury has found music producer Phil Spector guilty of murdering actress Lana Clakson in 2003. He has been remanded in custody, pending sentencing on 29 May, and faces at least 15 years in prison for second degree murder, and three years for improper use of a firearm. - Telegraph
Mel Gibson's wife Robyn has filed legal papers to divorce her husband of 28 years, citing "irreconcilable differences". There was no prenuptial agreement so Robyn could stand to receive 50 percent of Mel's $900million fortune. The couple has reportedly been separated for more than two and a half years. - TMZ
Roger Federer married his girlfriend of nine years, Mirka Vavrinec, in Basle, Switzerland on Saturday. Their honeymoon is on hold as Roger is in France for the Monte Carlo Masters. - Independent

Kate Keeps the Berlin Film Fun Going Before the Oscars

Kate Winslet waved to her fans earlier today on her way into a photo call for The Reader during the Berlin Film Festival. After posing for pictures, she sat down with her costars for a press conference and then got fancy to hit the premiere alongside Ralph Fiennes. Kate's up for an Oscar for her role in the WWII drama, but she's pragmatic about the odds of winning since she's been nominated five times before but never has won. She said, "I'm so used to it, having gone through it before and having lost so many times. Being in that losing state is something I'm much more comfortable in, in a funny kind of a way." Kate's wise not to get her hopes too high, but after all her award season success so far, her sixth time might be lucky. You could be too - fill out your ballot and enter to win a year of movies!

The Men Keep It Classy and Classic For Golden Globes

There weren't a whole lot of bright colors for the men on the red carpet at last night's Golden Globes but if it ain't broke, there's no use in fixing it. Even without taking any chances, the boys looked great on a sunny LA day that allowed for some of them to sport their sunglasses. Tom Cruise looked fantastic as his wife was performing her last show on Broadway before immediately heading to LA to meet up with her husband for the after parties. Brad Pitt didn't leave Angelina's side while Leonardo had Kate Winslet on his arm for the photos. Some of our favorite TV stars like Jon Hamm, David Duchovny, and Kiefer Sutherland got to mingle with the big screen elite and everyone cleaned up well for the big show. Sugar Bits - Kate Winslet Nominated For Two Golden Globes!

Homegrown talent Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes have both earned two nominations each for Golden Globes. The ceremony takes place on January 11, and Brits Dame Judi Dench, Eileen Atkins, Kate's husband Sam Mendes, Stephen Daldry and Danny Boyle are also nominated. Meryl Streep has two nominations in the Best Actress category for Doubt and Mamma Mia, and the late Heath Ledger is also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight. - BBC
Simon Cowell has said he's "very embarassed", after the contracts for this year's The X Factor contestants were leaked yesterday. It includes a clause that states they may not say anything nasty about Simon, which he laughed at, saying "I wasn't aware I was one of the clauses. You can't be horrible about me? That's probably the most useless clause in the history of contracts, because everybody does talk horribly about me, and you know what? I don't care. It sounds ridiculously hypocritical for me to slate loads of people who come on the show and then say, 'You have to be nice about Simon.'" - Telegraph

It Takes No Reading to See Kate's Red Carpet Hotness

Kate Winslet looked smoking hot premiering one of her two Oscar buzz-earning movies, The Reader in NYC last night. While there was a slight delay due to projection issues, the screening went well and there was certainly nothing wrong with the stars' choice of attire. Despite last month's airbrushing controversy, Kate donned a daring Herve Leger dress alongside her costar Ralph Fiennes. While this movie has some Kate acting buzz, it's nothing compared to her reunion with Leo in Revolutionary Road. While she and DiCaprio have aged a bit, fans everywhere are swooning to see them on screen again. Kate has a few more premieres ahead of her, but it will be hard for her to top this hot little number for the rest of her red carpets.

Sienna and Keira Cuddle Up at Independent Film Awards

Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller stayed close at the British Independent Film Awards at London's Old Billingsgate Market yesterday. Having been spotted with Balthazar Getty in London last week, Sienna looked happy to enjoy a girls' night with her The Edge of Love costar. Reports suggest she's agreed to give Balthazar a second chance if he woos her the old-fashioned way with romantic dinner dates and flowers. Anna Friel looked gorgeous is her floor-length print dress, and James McAvoy looked happy next to wife Anne-Marie Duff. Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner with three awards, including Skins' Dev Patel's Most Promising Newcomer.

Movie Preview: Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes in The Reader

This historical drama starring Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes was recently given an earlier release date of Dec. 10, 2008 (in limited release), possibly in the hopes that the movie will prove to be Oscar bait. From the looks of this trailer, that logic may be good.

The Reader takes place in postwar Germany where "a young man's decades-long obsession with an older woman runs headlong into a war crimes trial, where he learns an awful truth."

Winslet appears to be perfect for this role, and I was really impressed with The Hours, which is another of director Stephen Daldry's films, so I'm curious to see this movie. To watch the trailer, read more.

The Duchess: Oh, the (Beautifully Costumed) Drama!

Of course The Duchess is dramatic. Georgiana Cavendish, the Duchess of Devonshire, led a dramatic life and she herself was a dramatic - and smart, and charismatic - woman. I really liked this movie, but I might have liked it more if it were a slightly broader examination of the Duchess. I don't mean that they should have included more years in her life (I think that would have been a mistake) but the vast majority of the film is about her romantic and reproductive woes. She was a daring, intelligent, and remarkably influential woman during a time when women were expected to be anything but those things. While I liked this sweeping period drama, I might have enjoyed less soap opera and a tad more substance.

The costumes, however, cannot be disputed, for they are devastatingly gorgeous. I would watch this movie over and over with the sound off just to feast my eyes on the clothes. Dressed to perfection in every scene, Keira Knightley plays Georgiana, who marries William Cavendish, the Duke of Devonshire when she is just a teenager. The marriage is soon strained as it appears that Georgiana will only bear daughters. While the relationship grows bitter in private, Georgiana starts to become quite popular in public and immerses herself in the world of politics and high society. She's a natural charmer and trend-setter, though her husband puts more and more distance between them, choosing other women over his wife. Before long, Georgiana finds herself falling in love with a young politician, Charles Grey (Dominic Cooper), but the threat of scandal proves too great for the Duke and Duchess and a relationship with Charles is forbidden. There's much more to the story, but I won't spoil things for you. I can still share some thoughts, though, so read more.

Knightley strongly carries the film with her focused, honest portrayal of the brightly alluring yet unfortunate Duchess of Devonshire, and if she veers into melodrama it’s because the material clearly calls for it. She’s still a relatively young actress, which I think people sometimes forget, and while she still appears young onscreen (with that permanently youthful bounce in her step, a fresh energy to even her most morose scenes), there is so much potential there for her to mature into a truly phenomenal performer. She acts with her entire body, conveying emotion in the tiniest details: her whole frame rigid with rage, a coquettish tip of her head and a sidelong glance, the utterly distraught balling up of one fist . . . these things inform our understanding of Georgiana's emotional landscape.

Most of the time I cringed and tsk-tsked at the wretchedness of this poor young woman’s life, as the story is basically a long string of relationship issues and anxiety over pregnancies. There are countless historical movies that, if they center on a woman at all, focus on the pressure to conceive a male heir, the havoc this wreaks on a marriage, and the power plays that arise between the women who can conceive and those who cannot. This is understandable, given the nature of society back then, and yet here’s a story with some built-in political drama as well, with a fearless, deeply inspiring female protagonist. I would have appreciated more of that story. That said, I was riveted to this movie, intoxicated by the costumes and just as smitten with the Duchess as the rest of England seems to be. It’s a beautiful and sad film that is well worth seeing.
