Check Out the Yummy New Recipe Search!

The world of recipes on Yum just got a little bit yummier. A couple of months ago, we rolled out a new recipe form that lets you categorize recipes by cuisine, ingredient, occasion, and more. (Learn how to create a recipe here.) Now, those categories are coming in very handy, thanks to the new Yum recipe search!

The new and improved interface lets you easily find YumSugar and TeamSugar recipes by keyword, or by drilling down to specific categories. To see the form and find out more, read more.

To get to the recipe search page, check out the green "recipes" bar to the right of this post. From there, you can add a recipe, browse recipes, or search. Here's what the recipe search form looks like:

Only looking for appetizers? Just choose "appetizers" from the dropdown menu, and another dropdown menu will pop up underneath that lets you hone your search even further, e.g. "appetizers" can be broken down by "vegetables," "crostini," etc. There are also checkboxes that let you restrict your search by dietary considerations, such as "Vegetarian" or "Fast & Easy."

All of the searchable data comes from your recipe posts, so be as detailed as possible when entering recipes using the recipe form. The more we categorize our recipes, the better search will be!

Tyler Florence Hosts Search For the Greatest American Recipe

Tyler Florence may be slated to open several new restaurants and stores, but he's certainly not letting that get in the way of what he does best - TV. In addition to Tyler's Ultimate, his current show on Food Network, he's also teamed up with Lifetime and Parade magazine to host a new show, Search For the Greatest American Recipe.

The pilot, which begins production Sunday in Los Angeles, "will follow Florence as he travels to seven regions of the country to find unique homegrown recipes. Regional finalists then compete in a cooking competition that would lead to winning 'Greatest American Recipe.'"

In addition to hosting the show, TyFlo will also play the role of one of the show's judges. I'll be interested to see how the pilot pans out - after all, it sounds a bit like Food Network Challenge meets Chopped. Does Greatest American Recipe sound like something you'd watch?

Happy Hour: Apple Cidercar

After declaring I'd discovered the perfect Fall cocktail last week, I was worried I'd have nothing to look forward to. But surprisingly, my success had the opposite effect: I was inspired to go in search of other tipples that glorify the season's bounty.

Right now, it's impossible to wander the farmers market without being smitten by frosty jugs of freshly pressed apple cider. The apple cidercar - a riff on the time-honored sidecar cocktail - is a fun way to incorporate Autumn's quintessential beverage into a spirited libation. Check out the recipe when you read more.

Much like PartySugar, I'll be paying special attention to the oft-neglected starters when I host this year's Thanksgiving meal. I've not yet determined what they'll be: should I serve soup? Dip in a bread bowl? So I am excited for a new book, Pestos, Tapenades, & Spreads ($17) by Stacey Printz, which offers up an array of spreads to serve when entertaining on the run. This October, instead of being bummed about Summer's departure, I've decided to get excited for Fall. I've changed the background on my phone to an image of autumnal flowers, I've searched FabSugar for Fall-look inspiration, I've decorated my house with white pumpkins, and most importantly, I've starting sipping this apple cocktail.

Apples are a quintessential ingredient at this time of year, thus a stimulating concoction made with apple cider and dark rum seems seasonally appropriate. Although the recipe is very easy, the resulting drink is complex, refreshing, and delicious. I recommend using a dark, rich rum like Jamaica's Appleton; it adds a welcoming depth of flavor. To embrace Fall, mix this cocktail!

Sole Inspired by Julia

Whenever I chat with someone about the film Julie & Julia, it seems the famous recipe for beef Borgignonne enters the conversation. However, when I watched the movie it wasn't this dish that stood out in my mind. It was the sole meuniere - the life-changing fish that Julia enjoyed upon her arrival in France - that I long to taste. Since I have a copy of my grandmother's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, I went home and looked for Julia's recipe.Unfortunately it's not in the book, so I hit the Internet in search of a buttery white-fish recipe. Although it's not necessarily a classic sole meuniere, I experimented with this sole and herbed white wine lemon sauce. The final result wasn't a culinary revelation, but it was decidedly delicious. DIY: Make Your Own Bubble Bath

Over the weekend, I was really looking forward to a nice, fluffy, over-the-top kind of bubble bath. But, alas, the bubble part was missing. Realizing I had run out of my stash of sudsy products, I got to thinking that I should just make my own. So, I searched the Internet to find an environmentally friendly recipe. Check out this option below. It's easy on the budget, as well as the senses.

Gather together: one quart of warmed water; two ounces of liquid glycerin, like Nature's Answer Glycerine Extract ($9.50) or Heritage Store Vegetable Glycerin ($5); one four-ounce bar of castile soap, like Kirk's Natural Products Castile Bar Soap ($5); and several drops of your favorite essential oils to scent. Grate or chop up the soap and add to the warm water. Stir to melt. Add the essential oils and glycerin, store in an airtight container, and enjoy.
