You Asked: Why the Red Face When Running?

Hey FitSugar,
Per my New Year's resolution, I've started and managed to keep running in 2009. I used to run cross country and track in high school, about 10 years ago, but now I've noticed one big change - my face gets beet red when I run. It looks like a red mask. The redness stays just on my face and doesn't go down my neck or up into my scalp. Do you have any idea what is going on? Is there something I can do to prevent this or is it no big deal? Thanks in advance for your advice and help!

When you work out, your body produces heat. One way that your body ensures it doesn't overheat is by sweating, of course. But your body also increases blood circulation to the skin's surfaces, so the heat can be radiated off - smart body. Warm, oxygenated blood rushes to your face, turning it that bright red color. It's receiving lots of healthy blood, bringing nutrients to your skin and carrying away toxins. In medical speak, this phenomenon is known as vasodilation. Drinking an adequate amount of water before and during exercise may help reduce the redness by ensuring you're hydrated enough to sweat to properly cool yourself down.

Your face turning red is really no big deal unless you are also experiencing dizziness, fatigue, or nausea, which indicate that you may be in danger of becoming overheated. If that's the case, stop exercising immediately and get out of the sun if you are running outside. Be sure to drink plenty of cool water, too.

You Asked: My Face Turns Beet Red – Is This Normal?

Dear Fit,
After I run in hot weather, my face turns so bright red. I stay hydrated, and I do feel hot, but not overheated. The friends I run with get slightly flushed, but not as scarlet red as me. Is this OK, or is this a sign that something is wrong?

Don't worry, nothing is wrong with you. That ruby-red flush is just a sign that you're working hard and building up heat. When your temperature begins to rise, your smart little body perspires to keep itself cool, but it also dilates the blood vessels in your skin to reduce your body temperature (it's called vasodilation). This circulates blood to your skin's surface so that heat can radiate off of it. So have no fear - your face turns bright red because warm, oxygenated blood rushes to it as a way to prevent you from overheating. This is a good thing and nothing to be worried about.

If you notice other signs beyond a flushed face, like feeling exhausted, feeling dizzy, sweating more than normal, or are sick to your stomach then you may be close to heat exhaustion. If that's the case, stop exercising ASAP, get out of the sun, loosen up tight clothing (or remove it altogether), and drink plenty of cool water.

Having that sweet pink flush to your face is a tell-tale sign that you've been working out, but some people's faces turn beet-red. Why is that? Is something wrong?

Not at all! When you work out, your body produces heat. One way that your body makes sure it doesn't overheat is by sweating, of course, but your body also increases blood circulation to the skin's surfaces, so the heat can be radiated off (smart bod). Warm, oxygenated blood rushes to your face, turning it that bright red color. It's receiving lots of healthy blood, bringing nutrients to your skin and carrying away toxins.

If you are noticing other symptoms besides a red face, like dizziness, fatigue, or nausea, you may be in danger of becoming overheated. To help your body stay cool, wear clothes that breathe easily, like cotton. Also make sure to keep yourself hydrated. Bring a water bottle with you and sip when you feel yourself getting too hot (resist chugging down gallons of water - it could give you a belly ache). You can also pour some water on your head to cool you off (if you're running, lean forward so you don't get water in your shoes - it'll prevent blisters).

Now that the weather is getting warmer, if you are exercising outside, you may want to workout early in the morning or later in the evening, when the temperature is cooler. Also, tone down your workout a little - you may not be able to do what you did when the air was colder. If the heat really bothers you, you may want to exercise indoors (that's what air-conditioned gyms are for)

2009 American Music Awards: Selena Gomez

Adorable Disney-ite Selena Gomez always looks pretty and age-appropriate when she walks the red carpet. Tonight, she went elegant, wearing her curls in this lovely, loose bun and letting tendrils fall free to frame both sides of her face. I love that her eye makeup was extremely simple and that her lip gloss and blush were both almost sheer. I think she struck a good balance of red carpet glam and young-lady makeup, but what's your opinion? Is this just right for a 17-year-old, or is it too much?

Get Marissa Miller's Victoria's Secret Makeup Look

Wowza! I've been checking out the photos from the 2009 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show that took place in New York City last night and they are smoking h-o-t! The Angels are scantily clad in custom lingerie, dripping in accessories and have added five or so inch heels to their already lengthy legs.

But instead of feeling insecure, I just embrace their beauty and focus on their amazing hair (yes, they're all wearing extensions) and their dewy and sparkly-looking pink makeup.

To recreate this look at home, begin with a clean, hydrated and well moisutrised face. Then, apply a primer, followed by concealer to any red areas or spots, and medium-coverage foundation to the face, neck and decolletage. Next, dust a translucent setting powder all over and buff it to a natural finish by using a clean and fluffy brush.

CHEEKS: Although your skin is matte and prepped, all that you've created is a flawless canvas - and now it's time to have some fun! Add a liquid luminzer all over the face and blend into the foundation with a sponge for a dewy look. Next, apply a medium perky-pink blusher to the apples of your cheeks and blend outwards and upwards toward your cheekbones.
EYES: Start by sweeping a pale and creamy champage shadow from the bottom of the lid all the way up to the brows (which by the way must be filled in and perfectly shaped). Then, using a windshield-wiping motion, apply a taupey-grey coloured shadow in the crease for depth and a slightly smoky look. Over the grey, add a touch of pink shadow and blend well. Curl your lashes and apply a powder liner to the upper and lower rims of your eyes. Lastly tack on a full set of false lashes followed by two coats of black mascara.
LIPS: The goal for this lip look is full, glossy and most of all...kissable! The colour should fall somewhere between a pale pink and a medium rose lipstick topped with oodles of shimmery and sheer pink gloss.

How To: Get Sienna Miller's Healthy Hollywood Glow

At last night's Los Angeles premiere of G.I. Joe: The Rise Of The Cobra, Sienna Miller positively glowed on the red carpet. Considering she recently said that she'd be happy to wear a bin bag on these last legs of her gruelling promotional tour, she sure does cleans up like a champ when the event calls for it. I love her classic and glamorous Hollywood look complete with retro waves, tanned, matte skin, lined and defined eyes and bold, red lips.

FACE: Begin with a clean, dry face. Next, apply a moisturiser and a foundation that matches your skin tone. Blend well and set the foundation with a translucent powder. Lastly, use a large fluffy brush to buff skin to a flawless finish.
EYES: Sienna's eyes are simple to achieve. Start by blending an ivory shadow from the base of your lashes all the way to your lid. Then use a light to medium brown shade in the crease for depth. Fill in brows, curl your lashes and apply two coats of black mascara. Once it's dry, line your eyes with a black, liquid liner starting from the inner corner all the way to the outer corner. Extend the line and make it just a tad thicker on the ends for a dramatic, cat-like effect.
CHEEKS: For a nice, golden glow, apply bronzer with or without shimmer to your nose, forehead, temples, jawline and blend well. Then, with a gentle hand, use a delicate, pale pink blusher on the apples of your cheeks and down the center of your nose for a touch of warmth.
LIPS: Last but not least are your lips. Since this is the feature you'll want to accentuate most, make sure they're exfoliated and moisturised. Using a lip brush, apply a deep, brick (browny-orangey) red lipstick all over. For an even more come hither effect, dab a little bit of clear high-shine gloss in the center of your lower lip.

Want To Look Like Madonna, or at Least Have Skin Like Her?

Just like our bodies need oxygen to be healthy, our skin does too. Enter Michelle Peck, facialist to Madonna, Gwyneth, Jennifer Lopez, Molly Sims, Justin Timberlake and Eva Longoria (just to drop a few names). She started off as a masseuse, however, her career really began to take off when she connected with skincare brand Intraceuticals and began putting her own healing touch on their oxygen treatment called Intraceuticals Infusion.

Those who have experienced Michelle's work, just can't stay away, and I can understand why. After speaking with her at length, not only did I find her to be open, kind and warm, but she is also overflowing with depth, compassion and perspective. Her time spent with famous faces (ehem, she's been on two world tours with Madonna where she gave her a treatment before every single show) has not jaded her one bit. In fact, she is more concerned with the Earth, the human spirit and her charity of choice, Raising Malawi, than with outer beauty.

Intraceuticals came to the US about six years ago from Australia and is now available in over 35 countries. Michelle decided to come on board with them and eventually become their spokesperson because she saw something unique in their technology. Never before has there been a brand that combines 95% hyaluronic acid (the connective tissue that keeps skin lubricated and cushioned aka, young looking) mixed with hyperbaric pressure (oxygen under pressure) and 5% of vitamins A, C, E, aloe vera and green tea extract.

Keep in mind that plumping products/treatments like restylane and juvederm are forms of hyaluronic acid, but, you need to inject them into the skin because of the large-sized molecules. However, combined with the hyperbaric pressure, the Intraceuticals molecules are small enough to be driven into the skin with a machine that looks like an airbrush gun.

The entire treatment takes about an hour and are recommended to be done in a series of six every seven to ten days. After that, monthly maintenance is suggested. Sessions with Michelle are £325 each, but can go as low as £150 with other estheticians. Celebrities are so passionate about these treatments because there's no redness afterward, so you can put makeup on within 15 minutes. The end results are instant, but long term results are even better as it helps to minimize pores, tighten, firm, and hydrates the skin at the deepest level. Hey, if Madonna has been a fan for over four and a half years, there must be something to this! And if you want what Madge is having, ask for the Rejuvenation Treatment.

You must travel so much for work, how do you keep your skin looking good? I love serums because they penetrate deeper into my skin than creams.
What's your advice for keeping your skin young and healty? I'm big on staying out of the sun. Some of the most damaged skin I've seen in the world is sun damaged skin. I also use my treatment on the hands, necks and chest.
What's your favourite product? The Opulence Line Wand is great for under eye circles, and the Clarity Line Wand helps dry out blemishes really well.
What other skin care products does Madonna use? Atoxlelene Wand, Eye Gel and Blue Hydration Gel (which is rich in hyaluronic acid). The products support the treatments, but they aren't meant to replace your favourite product line. You can use whatever products you like in addition to ours.
What's your philosophy on beauty? Beauty truly comes from within. I'm very involved in Madonna's charity, Raising Malawi and have been to Malawi often. I find that helping others brings you personal happiness and inner beauty.
