Buzz Gift Guide: For Nerds, With Love

For today's holiday gift guide, here are some suggestions for some of your friends who are perhaps a little goofier than others. In this case, "nerd" is an affectionate term, not just a four-letter word.

Few other movies can provide such feelings of triumph as 1994's Revenge of the Nerds. With this gift, you can now go above and beyond the normal DVD version with The Atomic Wedgie Collection.

Judd Apatow's TV series Freaks and Geeks was such a comforting show because all the weird teens of the world could feel understood - whether they were "freaks" or "geeks." Freaks and Geeks - The Complete Series collects all 18 episodes of this show that ended far too soon.

I must admit, I can be a huge nerd sometimes, and I love me a good pun. Thus, I get a huge kick out of these punny aprons at WearableVegetables, like this one that reads "Lord of the Onion Rings." There are some other doozies there that just might crack up your nerdiest of buddies, like "Desperate Housechives," "Silence of the Yams," and "Who's Afraid of Ginger Root?" These can also be applied to tote bags, t-shirts, oven mitts and more.

What's Buzzworthy: College Movies

College movies are so fantastic because they can be serious and dramatic, or full of the ill-conceived, hilarious antics that college-aged kids are sometimes prone to take part in. For this week's Buzzworthy challenge, you all picked some great titles as your favorite college movies, and of those here are the ones that are nearest and dearest to my heart as well. And at the end of the post is a widget with all the bookmarked movies!

PCU
I love this movie, as does yiddidea, who writes this about her pick: "PCU is the BEST college movie. Best moment, and something I quote to this day at concerts: 'What's this? You're wearing the shirt of the band you're going to see? Don't be that guy. '"

Mona Lisa Smile
I'm glad tdamji bookmarked this movie, not just because I enjoy it as well, but because many college movies center around men and this movie is an interesting portrayal of a women's college in 1953. About Mona Lisa Smile, tdamji writes, "An excellent cast, an interesting plot and it all focuses on one of my majors: Art History!"

Revenge of the Nerds
Both WhiplashGirlchild and tdamji chose this classic movie of good vs. evil, nerd vs. popular. About her pick, Whip writes, "RotN was the first rated-R movie I ever saw (I was 10, we'd just gotten cable, and my parents were asleep) and I still love it till this day."

Good Will Hunting
Matt Damon playing the working-class genius. Robin Williams the quirky mentor. Ben Affleck donning an exaggerated Boston accent. What's not to love about this inspirational college movie? Thanks to City Love for bookmarking it!

The Freshman
This 1925 silent film - not to be confused with the 1990 Marlon Brando/Matthew Broderick movie - was bookmarked by Fab_Kitty who describes the movie like this: "In The Freshman, Harold Lloyd's character wants desperately to be a BMOC, but his attempts to impress only serve to make him the LOC (Laughingstock on campus). Will our scrappy friend ever get the respect and admiration of his fellow students? Watch the final football game to find out."

The Skulls
I have to admit, this movie, bookmarked by gruaig_rua, is a kind of guilty pleasure for me, since it stars one of my secret celebrity crushes, Josh Jackson as a college senior who joins a dangerous secret society.

Movie Night: Geeks Rule

Recommending the "Freaks and Geeks" DVDs earlier today got me thinking about movies in which the geeks triumph or in which the underdogs have their day. I checked with my girl GeekSugar and she recommended a few of her favorite "geeks rule" movies, so for this week's Movie Night, check out these titles that are Geek recommended, Buzz approved.

Goonies
This is one of the best movies to watch for those heartwarming "geeks rule" moments. Mikey and Brandon Walsh (um, not the Brandon Walsh from "90210," but that's a funny crossover) are determined to save their neighborhood from the big, bad meanies about to build a golf course near their homes. Together with their buddies Chunk, Andy, Mouth, Stef, and Data, the brothers set off to find the hidden fortune as marked on One-Eyed Willie's treasure map. Adventure ensues, along with Chunk's Truffle Shuffle dance and plenty of Sloth bonding.

Revenge of the Nerds
The ringleader of this "genre" of films, Revenge of the Nerds is the ultimate geek revenge fantasy. It was such a success (having struck a chord in many a moviegoer, perhaps) it spawned a second movie and two more TV sequels. The original movie pits the nerds against the jocks as the endearingly geeky Gilbert and Lewis embark on their first year at college. The two awkward guys grow sick of the Alpha Beta frat boys' taunts, so they team up with Pointdexter and Booger, pool their high-tech sensibilities and take their geeky revenge.

Real Genius
The hottie genius slacker. The child prodigy. The weird guy named Lazlo who lives in the steam tunnels. What unites this motley crew, of course, is geekdom. Val Kilmer, in probably the most brilliant comedic performance of his career, stars as Chris Knight, a scientist working on a laser project with his fellow students. When the nerds realize their professor has sinister intentions, they set out to prevent the laser from getting into the wrong hands, with the help of some unforgettable one-liners and the world's largest bowl of Jiffy Pop.

Halloween Fashion Emergency!

It's time for all of us to step in and help on this one. A friend was recently diagnosed with an eye infection and has to wear her glasses for two weeks - starting today. That means she has to wear them on Halloween. She was originally going to be Frida Kahlo (brilliant), but is crushed and does not think it will work with her thick-rimmed specs. She does not have prescription sunglasses, so that's out.

Let's back up and peruse this compilation of cool chicks who wear glasses on a day-to-day. Fast forward, what brilliant costume ideas containing glasses can we think of? She's not really feeling Harry Potter, Ugly Betty, or a Revenge of the Nerd. I suggested a UFO (see picture), but that's me. Speak up, speak specs!

Pop Watch – Spooks: Code 9, Episode 1

Wow, Spooks: Code 9 began with some thrills and spills, as well as a rather bleak view of the future of the UK. Code 9 is a nuclear attack in London that happens in 2012, and one year later a crew of six good-looking young people are put together as a new MI5 team to fight the terrorist threat. If you want to find out more about the premise, then check out my introduction to the series, but here's my thoughts on yesterday's opening episode (my thoughts on the second episode will follow this afternoon)!

Right, so in the Code 9 nuclear bomb blast in London over 100,000 people are killed, and even more are dealt a death sentence from the radiation. Bleak.
So here's the team. There's Jez – a former petty criminal – he says he's there because "the straight guys" didn't exactly save the world. So, he's edgy then. I like him though.
Rachel is blonde and beautiful, looks like she's stepped out of a magazine, and apparently used to be a police officer. I'm hoping she'll actually put a little more feeling into her lines as the episode goes on, because... oh sorry, I think I nodded off. But she says something important: terrorists are getting younger which means the MI5 is turning to recruiting younger people to find them, which makes the fact that this new bunch of recruits look like they should be in Hollyoaks or something similar make a little more sense. Not that that's a bad thing...
Rob was a medical student, and seems a touch arrogant to boot? Vik was an entrepreneur who wants to protect the country. And redhead Kylie was in London when the blast hit, she was unhurt but is sick from the radiation. She used to be a psychology student.

We fast forward to one year later, after their training is over. It's now 2013.
The things women will do for their country – Kylie's dancing and making out with a suspected terrorist. The times, they are bad. Rob's line – "She's on top of things" – when Kylie was making out with the terrorist guy, made me feel a little icky. Sure it was meant to be funny, but Rob just got a minus point from me.
Side note: post London-bombing, everything has relocated up north.

Hmm, Rachel still can't quite manage to put effort into anything she says. This could prove to be annoying.
The make-out terrorist guy's cohort follows Kylie to the loo where Rob is in waiting, and a big fight occurs. Does anyone else think the club's toilet makes it look like a club from Skins? Anyhow Kylie and Rob get what they needed, and it's a success!
Meanwhile Jez and Vik are undercover elsewhere under the guise of monitoring stock. Jez's line – "I must have missed the scene where Jason Bourne was stacking shelves" – made me giggle.
So, it turns out their recruiter and marginally older colleague Hannah is training Rachel in "calm authority"... perhaps that is why she's dead behind the eyes? I kid, I kid. I'm sure in time she will warm up a little.
The boys run into another guy – they don't know him, but I recognised him from the promos – Jamie Bell-lookalike Charlie. Hannah also knows him – he's the final member of their team, a mathematician.
The new team bond over shots at the house they seem to share. Being in the MI5 seems like fun – rather like being in a student dorm? Although I suppose all the events that have led them there weren't actually that great...
Enter patronising smarmy Neil, who knows Hannah. He's mysteriously trying to get her to leave the MI5, like he did. "Come on over to the slightly darker, but much more fun side." She's loyal though, and believes in her new charges. "Never say I didn't try to throw you a life line" he says, what a weird thing to say.

Hmm, Charlie is very much a nerd – and likes to prove it often by talking in statistics etc, just in case we forget he's a mathematician. Although perhaps that is how mathematicians speak. I don't know too many. He is pretty quietly cute though.
Rachel and Charlie share a quiet moment out on the terrace – will romance blossom? (Maybe if she develops a personality? Sorry.) Rob obviously likes Rachel too... is some possible tension a-brewing?
So all of them live at the house except Jez, who we also find out spends an evening each week going to check whether his family have been found after the bomb blast. A helpful bit of back-story that gives us an indication of why he changed his life around – he wants to get revenge on the terrorists. This bit brought up some eerie memories of the following days of 9/11, with the walls of photos and missing people notices.
So, down to the nitty gritty of the episode: The PM is on his way for a visit and they have six hours to prepare to prevent a hit on him.
Turns out the possible assassin is fifteen years old. Wow, they are getting younger. Seems the whole ridiculous shopping centres vs hoodies campaign was right?!
Charlie is on the case, he knows something's not right as the assassin is in place way before the PM is due... and then Hannah is shot! It's the whole Lisa Faulkner in the deep fat fryer shock character death incident all over again (from the original Spooks series if you're not following... ). Hannah dies. It's very sad.
However, it does cause some kind of emotional reaction from Rachel. Which I was kind of thankful for. This being the future and everything I was starting to think she might be a robot...
The child-assassin falls off the roof, after Jez tries to save him. Hannah was his intended target all along. The team strike out on their own, after Charlie asks their superior for five and a half hours to give them a chance to sort things out.
They track it all back to smarmy Neil. I knew smarmy Neil was trouble. And apparently not too high up in things, as next thing we know he's been stabbed in the back. Oooh, mysterious.
So it ends with the news that Charlie is now their Interim Team Leader... and a guy gives him a USB stick with a message from Hannah on it. What will she say?!

Jay-Z Kingdom Comes to Hollywood

Jay-Z celebrated the release of his album Kingdom Come earlier this week at Area in LA. Lots of Jay-Z's friends came down to the party including Jimmy Kimmel and girlfriend Sarah Silverman. Kristin Cavallari also showed, probably still a little upset after learning that her remake Revenge of the Nerds was nixed for being too raunchy. But the big man of the night, besides Jay-Z was Snoop who gave lots of autographs to fans waiting outside. We don't really get how he isn't in jail despite his recent arrests for carrying various assault weapons. Hopefully he left them at home!

Sugar Bits - Brit's New Crib Paid for by New Gig
