Great Expectations at Paris Fashion Week

The most exciting week of fashion is upon us. Don't get me wrong - New York Fashion Week always inspires, but Paris just seems . . . magical. WWD offered a behind-the-scenes look at some of the fashion houses last-minute musings. I can already tell Isabel Marant will make us swoon all over again with hot-pink tunics and fringed and studded boots. Everyone's talking about Peter Copping's first collection for Nina Ricci (showing tonight). And the brilliant Viktor & Rolf are gonna go all Texas Chainsaw Massacre on a too-perfect gown. Can't wait? Neither can I!

On Our Radar: Rick Owens Furniture Exhibition

Rick Owens has made his mark in London this week as he shows off his first venture in to furniture design. The edgy Paris based designer has been inspired by Le Corbusier for the pieces which are currently on show at the Sebastian + Barquet’s gallery. Owens told WWD, "I look at architecture for inspiration. If I’m wondering where to go with a collection, all I need to do is open a Le Corbusier book, and the consistency, the integrity of his work tells me what my next step should be." The pieces sell through galleries rather than stores and include chairs, sofas, tables and lamps. They're crafted from a range of materials from Antlers to marble and fisher fur, and purchasing one of Owens designs could cost you from £1,800 to £22,000. What do you think of his latest venture?

Trend Alert: Laddered Tops

This season is all about the worn in look, from ripped jeans to laddered knits. Therefore, instead of throwing out that jumper covered in holes, simply throw it on with leggings or jeans for a grunge look.

Alternatively, if all of your knitwear is in a good state you can buy a pre-laddered top to help you achieve the style. This look has been spotted at Stella McCartney and Rick Owens where they look great teamed with leggings or skinny jeans.

The High Street has some great options too, for example Topshop have a gothic style slashed tunic (£25). Miss Selfridge also have a laddered cardigan (£32). Do you like this style?

On Our Radar: Rick Owens Opens In London

It appears that designers are increasingly throwing caution to the wind at the moment as boutiques continue to open in the British capital. Already this year we have seen stores open for Missoni and Lanvin, and now Marc by Marc Jacobs and Rick Owens join the Brit pack. Paris based designer Rick has added to the Mount Street empire that is forming, but he doesn't think it's bad timing.

“I do think [it’s] not a bad time to do it. What if all the stores that carry me are going to have a hard time of it? It’s in a way a good investment. Since I decided to keep going with this design thing anyway, I might as well do some stores. I might as well invest in it.”

The new shop is actually just round the corner from Mount Street on South Audley Street and has already proved to be a bit of a hit. “The London customer is kind of a mix between a Paris customer and the New York customer. Kind of with that sense of romance of the Parisian customer but [mixed] with the very sharp and demanding New York customer.”

Owen's store stocks mainly his own line but also a few rails by upcoming designers Gareth Pugh and Alice Lemoine, whom he actively supports. So, what's next for his retail empire? He explains, “We have a beautiful space in Tokyo, then I think it’s time to stop a little bit."
