2009 Biggest Headline: Chris Brown Assaults Rihanna

It was just hours before the Grammy red carpet when the news broke that Chris Brown had allegedly assaulted Rihanna. The golden couple were both scheduled to perform during the show, but it soon became clear that their picture-perfect relationship wasn't what it seemed despite looking cozy the night before at a Grammys preparty. As details began to emerge, stories about Chris's abusive past trickled in while his camp started serious damage control. Just weeks later, in a shocking turn of events, the troubled couple was spotted meeting up in Miami. In June, Chris headed to court while Rihanna kept quiet, but the two continued to pop up around town together even after Chris was sentenced. It wasn't until July, nearly six months after the incident, that Chris made a halfhearted public apology to Rihanna on a press tour that included Larry King.

Rihanna spent most of the Summer in NYC focusing on her music and showing off her bikini body before moving on to Paris for Fashion Week. By Fall, Chris was busy completing his community-service sentence and Rihanna was finally ready to break her silence. After speaking out against domestic violence, Rihanna came out on top of the sad situation and was named Woman of the Year by Glamour magazine. She's now moving on and promoting her hot new album with a big smile that we hope continues well into 2010.

Clive Davis Gets the Pre-Party Started With Grammy Favorites

Rihanna Breaks Her Silence and Speaks About Chris Brown

Rihanna has spoken for the first time about her incident with Chris Brown in February. Speaking to Diane Sawyer in an interview which will air in the States on Good Morning America on Thursday and on 20/20 on Friday, Rihanna says: "This happened to me. … It can happen to anyone" and adds that Chris "was definitely my first big love". She was later seen out about about in Manhattan, and has also opened up in the December issue of US Glamour magazine, as one of their Women of the Year, about how she coped in the aftermath:

On how the people around helped her cope: "My friends and family have been extremely supportive, and everyone has been there for me. But at some point you are there alone. It’s a lonely place to be-no one can understand. That’s when you get close to God."
On she has changed as a resut: "I’m stronger, wiser and more aware. You don’t realize how much your decisions affect people you don’t even know, like fans."
On how the public experience affected her: "It has taught me so much. I felt like I went to sleep as Rihanna and woke up as Britney Spears."
On what she would say to others in a similar situation: "Domestic violence is a big secret. No kid goes around and lets people know their parents fight. Teenage girls can’t tell their parents that their boyfriend beat them up. You don’t dare let your neighbor know that you fight. It’s one of the things we [women] will hide, because it’s embarrassing. My story was broadcast all over the world for people to see, and they have followed every step of my recovery. The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that. I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn’t heard. Now I can help speak for those women."

Chris and Rihanna Allegedly Had Abusive Past, Case Delayed

Chris Brown's alleged attack on Rihanna might not have been his first. Friends of Rihanna have stepped up and said she had visible bruises on her neck in December. Supporting this story is the most recent police report in which Rih supposedly revealed Chris had attacked her before and they were in an "ongoing and escalating abusive relationship." While Chris's sister said her brother's not violent, there are reports that he has a history of temper problems.

Some suspect Chris is in Las Vegas while others say that he and Rihanna are still in LA. Tonight both of them are up for NAACP Image Awards, and there hasn't been word of their cancellations yet. The case has been pushed back for further investigation to determine whether the criminal threats charge, which is based on Chris' alleged threat to kill Rihanna, is strong enough to hold. The police may be re-interviewing both of them soon. Meanwhile, celebrities like TI and Terrence Howard are retracting their support of Chris while Jay-Z, who is very protective of Rihanna, is upset, angry, and ready to take action about the situation.

Chris Brown Suspended From Wrigley's Deal and More Details On Assault, Rihanna Says Love Hurts

After yesterday's shocking news about Chris Brown's assault charge, today was filled with aftermath and additional information about Chris and Rihanna. This morning it was reported that a deadly weapon was involved, though sources from the LAPD have clarified that there were no actual weapons. That said, apparently Rihanna was hysterical and badly beaten when the cops showed up at the scene of the crime, and was in too much pain to be touched. Supposedly Chris and Rihanna were also involved in a spat the night before the incident occurred, where they were overheard yelling and swearing at each other after a pre-Grammy party.

Chris's endorsement deal with Wrigley's has been suspended for the time being and apparently he's been hiding out in a hotel. Rihanna's team is rumored to be trying to bring the singer back to Barbados where she can relax far away from Chris. Chris has already withdrawn from his performance at the NBA All-Star game. The details seem to keep getting sadder and more intense, including a chilling foreshadowing excerpt from an article in Cosmopolitan published last year where Rihanna wrote, "you know you're in love when it hurts."

Rihanna Arrives at MSG in the Knick of Time For a Game

A handful of celebs turned up at Madison Square Garden last night to see the Knicks play the Trailblazers. Rihanna was front and center with a friend after her weekend appearance on SNL, where she starred in one of Andy Samberg's digital shorts, "Shy Ronnie", and then celebrated with the cast and host Blake Lively at the afterparty. Also courtside yesterday was Celine Dion with her husband Rene and son Rene-Charles, who all seemed to have struck up quite a rapport with fellow fan Chris Rock. Rihanna has been traveling around the world for the past few weeks promoting her new album, Rated R, but this time she was able to spend a rare evening off just having fun.

Rihanna and Chris Attend NBA Finals, but Not Together

Rihanna and Chris Brown attended game four of the NBA Finals in Orlando last night, though contrary to initial rumors they were not sitting together. Both Chris and Rihanna have attended games in the series, but not ever in the same place at the same time. Rih made the trek from NYC yesterday after spending a few days socializing with friends and her rumored new flame. Whatever is going on in their downtime apart, in under two weeks, Chris and Rihanna will be in LA when she testifies at his June 22 hearing.

Chris Brown Avoids Jail Time, Strikes Plea Bargain

Chris Brown arrived at court in LA earlier today to face a judge in his assault trial. He pled guilty in exchange for a plea bargain that will see Chris serve 180 days of community service, five years probation, and complete a domestic violence counseling program. If he meets those terms, no jail time will be required. He'll complete his hours of service near his home in Virginia, and Chris also apparently has to stay far away from Rihanna. The presiding judge said, "I want Mr. Brown to be treated the same as any other defendant who would come into this court." As required, Rihanna was was on hand to deliver testimony, though it wasn't needed considering Chris's plea.
