How to Deal With Road Rage

I'm sure you've all been one of those pissed off people, angrily clenching the steering wheel, cursing at the traffic that's making you late for work. Stress from driving can cause your blood pressure to rise and your emotions to get the best of you behind the wheel. People with such road rage honk their horn incessantly, yell at other drivers, tailgate cars in front of them, and weave in and out of different lanes, which can cause accidents.

If any of this rings true for you, here are some ways to prevent road rage:

Carpool. Take a bus. Hop on the subway. You can get to work anyway you want, but who said you have to be the one behind the wheel? Now instead of getting annoyed during your commute, you can read a book, catch up on the news, write a letter, talk to other people, do a little work, or even snooze. Doesn't that sound relaxing? Plus, it's better for the environment!
If you have to drive, try to avoid certain times of day or places that get congested. I used to leave for work a little earlier, which almost cut my commute in half.
Make yourself a mix of calming songs to listen to in the car. You'd be surprised what relaxing music can do for your mood. Or listen to a book on tape. Getting lost in a good story can distract you from getting bothered by what's happening outside the car.
Be the bigger person. If someone cuts you off, doesn't use their turn signal, runs a red light, or rides up your behind, just let it go. You can't change what they did (even if you give them "the finger" with both hands), so just forget about it. Be proud that you are being a good and safe driver.
If you come across an aggressive driver, keep your distance, don't make eye contact, don't honk, and don't do anything to instigate them.

The Road: A Bleak Journey That Will Haunt You

It's not that I was expecting a film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's The Road to be happy sunshine - I just wasn't expecting it to seem so possible.

The apocalyptic tale takes place in a wasteland in the future after most humans are gone. It's desolate, the sky is a brownish-gray, and the land seems to be covered with ash. Unlike showy 2012, this is an end-of-the-world tale stripped down, which makes it all the more realistic and chilling.

We meet Man (Viggo Mortensen) and Boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a father and son making their way down south because they can't survive another Winter in this ominous setting. (Charlize Theron plays their wife and mother through a series of flashbacks). With a meager amount of food left on the planet, the select few people remaining (and there aren't many) will basically kill for supplies - or turn to cannibalism for sustenance. If this sounds like a horror film, it's because it pretty much is one. In fact, it's the worst, most plausible kind: one that explores the evils of humanity.

I'm sure many viewers won't be able to (or won't want to) stomach the subject matter, but the film is worth seeing thanks to the relationship between the father and son. In terms of plot, there isn't a ton that happens, and most of the action involves bumping into new strangers, like an elderly man (Robert Duvall) and a threatening gang. Some may find the lack of events monotonous, but this is why father and son are so important. Man is an average Joe who questions how far he'll go to keep Boy safe and what that means for his conscience; Boy is an innocent who still looks for good in people. The film obviously raises questions about the nature of who we are when tested - but the story is ultimately about their relationship.

As Man, Viggo Mortensen gives a mesmerizing performance that should bring his name up around awards season, and Smit-McPhee as his son is a great child actor, especially given the dark subject matter.

If you're a McCarthy fan or even just a fan of great acting, you'll want to check this one out. But, I'd suggest saving it for next week - after you find your Thanksgiving warm fuzzies somewhere else.

Road Tripping Moves For T-Day Travel

Considered the most travel saturated holiday in the US, many of us will be taking to the road or to the skies to see our family and friends this Thanksgiving. If you're flying try these stretches to keep yourself sane on the plane. And if you're driving I have a few moves to keep your body awake and make good use of your time stuck in traffic.

Steering wheel isometrics: Using simple isometric exercises, you can work your arms. Start with your hands at nine and three on the steering wheel (just like driver's ed class) and press inward with your arms. Hold for five counts, but keep the tension out of your neck. Repeat four times, and then move your hands to 10 and two and repeat. Changing positions of your hands will work different muscle groups.
Belly vacuums: This is a great way to work your abs at traffic lights or waiting out a traffic jam. On an exhale simply pull your abs toward your spine without letting your back round. Keep the abs engaged and focus on breathing into the back of your ribs for three to five breaths.
Glute winks: Your bum can get sore and numb from sitting for so long. This exercise not only works the glutes a bit, it also gets the circulation going once again and can relieve low back pain, too. Simply squeeze your right glute for three to five seconds, release it and switch sides. Repeat for a total of 10 times.

Feeling tense behind the wheel, I have a few remedies so read more.

Shoulder shrugs: Keeping your hands on the steering wheel, inhale and raise your shoulders to your ears. Exhale allowing your shoulders to drop. Repeat a total of five to 10 times.
Deep breathing: Don't underestimate the power of breathing to calm yourself down in heavy traffic. Inhale and fill your lungs, then slowly exhale releasing the tension from your upper body.
Slow shimmy: Channel a slower version of Beyonce's shoulder shimmy to release tension in your upper body. Keep your hands on the wheel, bring your right shoulder forward, then alternate bringing your left one toward the wheel. This move will make your spine twist a bit, which feels great after staring at the road for hours on end.

I also suggest stopping every two hours to stretch your legs. Just walking about a bit can enliven the weary traveler and help you stay alert while driving. I like to stretch my hamstrings by propping my heel on the bumper of the car.

Charlize Theron stepped out for the LA premiere of The Road last night with Stuart Townsend and mom Gerda by her side. Her hair and wardrobe were light, but Charlize spiced things up with a deep red pout. Those lips sadly won't be getting anywhere near Johnny Depp in the near future - he's in talks to sign on to The Tourist, which Charlize dropped out of last month only to have Angelina Jolie pick up the role.

Gwyneth, Mario Team With Chipotle For Spain . . . on the Road Again

I can't wait to watch PBS's up and coming travel-food show, Spain . . . on the Road Again. The show - which has already been filmed - stars the random, but fabulous foursome of Gwyneth Paltrow, Mario Batali, Mark Bittman, and Claudia Bassols. Although the air date is yet to be determined, more details about the show have been released. According to an article in Advertising Age, the series will:

culminate in an Iron Chef-esque competition emceed by Mr. Batali and Ms. Paltrow. In between visits to the Prado Museum in Madrid, an impromptu chat with starchitect Frank Gehry and countless trips in topless convertibles furnished by Mercedes, Ms. Paltrow lets her newfound appreciation for the less-refined side of food shine.

In an attempt to highlight their "Food With Integrity" slogan, Chipotle has signed on as the show's main sponsor. The fast-food Mexican chain owned by McDonald's wants people to know their commitment to using natural meats and organic products.

While the combination of Chiptole, Gwyneth, and Mario seems odd, I have a feeling the show is going to be amazing. What do you think of the partnership? Are you looking forward to Spain . . . on the Road Again?

Gwyneth, Batali, Bittman, and Claudia Hit the Road

A few months ago, I mentioned that Gwyneth Paltrow was heading to Spain with Mario Batali in order to film a show for PBS. Well, for all of you who thought it was too crazy to be true, I have news for you: They've started filming!

That's right, according to the Associated Press, Paltrow and Batali - along with Mark Bittman (aka the New York Times's "Minimalist") and Spanish actress Claudia Bassols - are spending much of the next four months cruising around Spain in a fleet of Mercedes. Their producer, Charles Pinksy, hasn't told them what their itinerary is, but cameras in the cars will capture their reactions.

"It is going to be a road trip as if anybody else was taking a road trip, although we've planned things out. We've got some special things that maybe other tourists might not get a chance to do, as well," Pinsky told a press conference Tuesday in Madrid.

I don't know about you, but I am definitely going to tune in. Batali and Bittman are always worth watching - especially together - and the addition of Paltrow and Bassols should make for very entertaining television. What do you think? Are you going to watch?
