Rihanna: A Fashion Metamorphosis

Enter into the world of Rihanna. Since 2005, the Barbadian beauty caught my attention with her catchy songs, and even more so, her megawatt style. When Rihanna first hit the scene, she stayed within the sexy singer realm via colorful body-con frocks and separates. As the years went along, she took a turn towards high fashion. After attending numerous runway shows, Rihanna developed an edgier sense of dressing - who can forget those star shaped pasties - and started donning clothes and accessories from the likes of Chanel, Alexander Wang, and Rodarte, to name a few. Despite a tough year, the songstress continues to impress me with her daring in-your-face ensembles and experimental hairdos. Let's take a look at Rihanna's astounding fashion metamorphosis.

Angie Harmon Straps Into Rodarte Boots: Love It or Hate It?

Hot mommy Angie Harmon is usually so pretty on the red carpet, so to see her so severe is, well, different. At the 2009 Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Awards last night, the actress wore a loose-fitting maroon dress, but what comes next is questionable. She completed her look with Rodarte's thigh-high gray boots from Fall '09. The boots are super futuristic, but I'm not sold on them with that dress. What do you think?

While I'm excited to see designers innovating, I'd also like to showcase looks that are achievable without a team of brilliant makeup artists present. Models Get Inked at Rodarte

When I first saw the photos from Rodarte's runway show, I couldn't help but be immediately drawn to the swirly, geometric arm tattoos worn by the models on the runway. It was a little bit Xena: Warrior Princess and Kat Von D combined. Fab was on the fence about the clothing, inspired by California condors, but as for that well-thought-out tribalesque arm makeup, I was definitely impressed. MAC Senior Artist Chantel Miller, who designed the look, was influenced by the Māori people, an indigenous group in New Zealand. "The idea for the tattoos stemmed from [designers] Kate and Laura’s desire to celebrate makeup as art not only for the face, but also for the body in a similar way that Indian culture uses henna. They want women to look at makeup as an accessory for an outfit the way you would a bracelet or a necklace," said Miller.

Rodarte's Death Valley Voodoo Ladies: Love It or Hate It?

Rodarte continues to be a hot ticket at New York Fashion Week. With a unique point of view and celebrity cheerleader Kirsten Dunst, their next moves are closely monitored. I'm always intrigued by their inspirations - in the past it's been Japanese horror movies and Star Wars. For Spring, the Mulleavy sisters took a trip to Death Valley, hence their dusty palette and rugged trimmings. Laura referenced freaky, dark feathery friends: "California condors, the big, bald, black vultures that faced extinction in the late '80s." Aside from the black sand on the runway, the interpretation wasn't too literal - tribal tattooed arms provide some voodoo mystique. Rodarte partnered with Nicholas Kirkwood on their always intense shoes. I'm on the barbwire fence with this once, what about you? New York Fashion Week, Spring 2010: Rodarte

Rodarte is my favourite New York based design house. Their presentation is always a highlight for me, and Spring 2010 did not disappoint. I was completely in love with Autumn '09 (especially those boots) and struggled to imagine how the girls would top it, but they definitely developed their designs and you could see the progression within their work. Before the show, Laura Mulleavy told WWD about their unusual inspiration – California condors. “We just kept thinking about how they had to scavenge to survive. If they were mangled and tattered, how they would be reborn.”

There was a grungey warrior feel to the collection with a slightly futuristic edge. Pieces were strung together with patchworks of distressed materials including tartan, tie dye, wool cobweb, and leather. Laura explained, "We ruined everything." Killer heels were provided by Nicholas Kirkwood who created heavily studded platforms.

Fall is nearing and my wallet is taking a momentary nap. Are you ready to review my favorite Fall trends? These are the clothes I am most excited for. Everyone's talking about the '80s power dressing revival - been there, done that. Let's dig a little deeper, shall we? Starting with my favorite neutral: gray day. Gray has a natural way of appearing modern, sporty, and versatile. Take this Versace gown; it is all of the above, with a strict serving of sex appeal. Gray days are meant for a mellow life, and yet they still deliver a strong statement. Happy gray day.

Rodarte to Go International For Target

What a glorious day! It has just been announced that Kate and Laura Mulleavy are designing a 55-piece Rodarte line for Target Go International, which lands in stores and online on Dec. 20. "It’s very feminine, yet very modern. The collection incorporates a rich mix of patterns and fabrications and everything from sequins and bows to faux fur. The key with Rodarte is layering," said Target spokesperson Joshua Thomas. Prices will range from $9.99 for knee-highs to $79.99 for a leopard-print jacket. Also, expect to see a variety of holiday dresses. All of Target's designer collaborations have been great, but this one I'm standing in line for.
