On Our Radar: Saks's New Department Is Made For the Working Woman

Saks knows wearing the latest five-inch platforms to your job isn't the most work-appropriate. That's why they've come up with a new department, dubbed WEAR, specifically catering to the stylish working woman. It's filled with hip, everyday clothes boasting a load of popular contemporary brands such as Elie Tahari, Tory Burch, M Missoni, and DKNY, to name a few.

“There has been an underserved market of style-conscious working women, maturing contemporary customers, and women who pay attention to fashion and want to integrate it into their lives in a sophisticated way,” said Joseph Boitano of Saks. Think of it as runway meets real life. Awesome. Keep your eyes peeled for its Spring debut across the country!

Fab Flash: Saks Fifth Avenue's Dismal Downturn

Saks Fifth Avenue is one of our favorite online stores, but it's been experiencing major economic woes.

In November, the luxury retailer reported “widespread weakness” with a net loss of $42.8 million. Today, the luxury retailer announced it will be closing shop on all but two of its bridal salons. The two bridal salons left standing will be the New York flagship and the Beverly Hills store. All other locations are set to close sometime next year. Saks will start marking down its bridal collections - which includes designs from the likes of Carolina Herrera, Jenny Packham, Monique Lhuillier , and Oscar de la Renta - in January - future brides take note!

On the flip side, Neiman Marcus reported a $12.9 million profit this quarter. Both retailers seem similar so we wonder why one's doing much better than the other. Care to enlighten us?

Ooh, this one's a toughie. Online shops are our friends. Without them, there would be no slick deals or yummy eye candy to peruse through. It was hard choosing but we narrowed it down to Net-a-porter, eLUXURY, J.Crew, Urban Outfitters, Shopbop, and Saks. Each site varies in selection, styles, and price points. Which one got the most of your business in 2008?

Saks just added new styles to their sale and I'm jumping on it! I know it can get a little daunting when there are so many items to look through but you can use their handy search box and sort by price (I use the low to high option). That way, you can find the best deals - pretty cool, huh? This Marc by Marc Jacobs Zigzag Stripe Top ($118, originally $198), would go perfectly with my high-waisted flared jeans . . .

It's the holidays and you want your little one to look all ritzy for Aunt Judy's party. Plaid dresses are always a hit this time of year. Instead of the traditional red and green, try something a little different to go with those adorable black patent leather shoes.

Simple: Old Navy makes this all cotton twill jumper for a bargain $20.

Swank: For the less price conscientious, Burberry makes a chic jumper out of their signature plaid print for $132. (The onesie underneath is sold separately for $76).

Both are machine washable, which means you won't have to hover over precious while she devours gooey peppermint candies.

Now that Labor Day is over, we're nearing the end of summer sale season - not until around Thanksgiving will sales really start to pick up again. But no need to fret, all is not lost quite yet; there are still a few hangers-on. Limited-Edition Fragrance: Creed Fleurs De Gardenia

Sixth-generation perfumer Oliver Creed has created a new unisex scent inspired by the aromas of Miami. The limited edition fragrance, called Fleurs De Gardenia, will be available only at Saks Fifth Avenue stores and only through the month of September. The scent is dominated by essences of gardenias from Miami, Asia, and French Polynesia; it has top notes of peony, orange, jasmine, rose, and iris with bottom notes of vanilla, ambergris, and royal sandalwood.

To order the fragrance, call Saks directly at 1-877-551-SAKS. The 1.7-ounce bottle comes in a winter-white leather atomizer (the same color as the Miami gardenia, naturally) and sells for $250. The significantly larger 8.4-ounce bottle sells for $375 and is packaged in a classic Creed glass bottle.
