I love unusual salon signs. Perhaps it's due to an intentional pun, the copy is inadvertently missing a letter, or a strange business name makes it all the more fun. The "Greene Nails" salon near my apartment, for instance, doesn't conjure up images of the kind of nails I'd like to step out with; it makes me think more along the lines of "moldy growths," not Chanel's lovely jade hue.

I have a fair number of friends who are hairstylists, and one of the best parts about that — besides their gratuitous advice, of course — is that they have lots of hilarious tales to tell. With schedules that often pack in over 10 clients a day, that's a great deal of interaction, and that can lead to some pretty wacky encounters.
This leads me to Behindthechair.com (BTC), an online community of salon professionals.

As with any profession, there's an element of industry lingo that dominates during break-room gatherings and water cooler-style meetings. Waiters, for instance, might say they're in the weeds during a particularly busy dinner rush, or they might find out a dish has been given the "86" when it sells out for the evening. But as for hairstylists, when it comes to their own unique jargon, can you guess the meaning behind their shoptalk?

You've been getting your hair cut by the same stylist for years, and unfortunately, you're just not happy with the results anymore. You love the salon's atmosphere and location, the prices are right, and you can't help but notice the amazing cuts given by the stylist a few stations back. Earlier, I presented you with tips from Joydene L.

Unfortunately, there comes a time when certain relationships must end. Now I know that most of you are loyal to your hairstylist, but has there ever been a time when you feel you must, for some reason or another, break up with your stylist? That's just what author Joydene L.

Have you ever left the salon feeling not-so-fabulous about your cut or color? Maybe the blond was a little too yellow for your liking, or there was an obvious bleed mark in your fringe. Or perhaps it was just that your new cut wasn't cooperating with the texture of your hair, leaving you with a string of bad hair days.

I recently showed you a few ways to decorate with old windows, and I've seen another instance that I just had to share. I stumbled across the Le Créme Spa in San Francisco, and was charmed by its shabby chic interior design. Here, the salon hung an arrangement of five white windows from the ceiling to separate the front desk from a bench used for pedicures.

A "quick trip" to the salon can take what feels like an eternity, especially if your stylist sees clients back-to-back or is double booked. Patience isn't exactly my best virtue, but salon time can be a great opportunity to sit back and not worry about all the things I could or should be doing. Even with the fun magazines I don't get at home, I'd be lying if I said I've never blogged while under the dryer.

You say honey, I say honey, but what color comes out on your hair? People have different interpretations of hair color descriptions, so just as it's smart to take pictures of what you like and don't like, to the salon, it's wise to keep track of your color.
My favorite stylist keeps index cards on all her clients with their colors, conditioning treatments, cuts, etc., which proved very handy when I relocated.
